  • Not Bad For the Price

As reviewed by Dave on 10/4/2009

Bought it for use in field recording of ambient backgrounds and wildlife SFX. It does the job, what can I say, and for a price like this you've got yourself a pretty good value for your money. I haven't had any real issues with it yet, other than one time when the unit would not write to disk and I had to reformat the CompactFlash card, erasing all files on the card, but since then, it has run well. The 1/8 input is pretty clean, especially when used with the included T-shaped mic, but delivers a dissapointing amount of hiss when used with my other mic, an Audio Technica Pro 24 condenser. The 1/4 inputs do not deliver the same degree of hiss, but instead generate a strange ticking sound - this occurs even without the microphone plugged in. I get the impression that this recorder is praised in its product description for its 4 inputs, while in reality I think it is really meant to be used with the included mic, which captures sound similar to a camcorder microphone. It's not the best, but again, it was a great price. All in all, I'm glad I bought it.

  • Great Product most of the time

As reviewed by Michael on 3/3/2008

Basically, we record live sessions of our band as well as drums and instruments when we don't want to mic everything in the whole freakin' room. Its quick and simple for decent recordings. Unfortunately it picks up highs(cymbals/snare/feedback)really really well so that is a problem. Also, don't expect to edit ANYTHING!, you can amplify but thats about it once its on the computer. I like it.

  • Does the job

As reviewed by Verdict on 9/4/2008

I bought this for some field recording work when I couldn't or didn't feel like bringing my Korg D3200 with me everytime I needed to make a decent recording. I looked primarily at this recorder vs the Zoom H4. Both were the same price but the Zoom H4 had some extra features that I didn't need. I determined I liked the menu system and the quality of the conveters over the Zoom H4. The microtrack2 was just easier and sounded better. I researched it pretty well before buying it so I wasn't suprised out of the box of what it was or wasn't capable of. The only negative is that sometimes you can hear a clicking noise when recording. However, I've found that this rarely happens and it goes away once the machine warms up a little bit for about 30 seconds. I wouldn't view this as a problem because I cant hear it in the recording. Also, the included mic sounds okay for voice interview/podcast type stuff but it is too noisy and crappy sounding on any other source. This didn't effect me though because I was planning on using my own mics in the field anyway. I'm very happy with it. My buddy has the Zoom H4 and I'd look at that one if you want better built in mics for a similar cheap price.
