Best Under 1000
I was initially looking for some small studio monitors for my tracking station when not in my regular studio. Picked these babies up after auditioning them at GC against rokits and other similarly priced monitors. These babies rock. Nice tight low end and crispy, accurate highs. Lacks a little bit of mid-range where Im comfortable, but thats okay! Doing R&B music I get plenty of that in my wall of vocals anyway so subtractive EQ comes into play there and I rarely get it wrong. Anyhow, I started mixing on these and sure enough many of my mixes actually translate with these puppies. I was expecting the typical boomy mixes you get when mixing with budget speakers, but these speakers were honest when listening at normal mixing levels. The self noise is excellent.. actually better than my event TR8.
I have mixed with everything under the sun in this price range and I can say that these speakers are simply the best and most "translatable" to my car, boombox, etc. (of course under 1000$) If you're looking to get some speakers in the next price range, I recommend the Dynaudio BM6a's. Those are the best in their range also.

These things really kick !
Wow! What an amazing purchase. Let me explain. I've got this laptop computer at home. I have been running my MP3's into my Mackie 1202 mixer...then into headphones. I thought,"Man,I need some kickin' speakers so I can listen to this stuff." Now...I have big stereo speakers, bigger PA speakers, and several power amps. Do I want to fool around with hookin' all of this stuff up...just to hear my tunes?! NO...takes too much time. So I thought,"Some powered speakers would be great. Studio monitors. Yeah...that should do the trick!" Off to my local Guitar Center I went. Now comes the moment of judgement. Which set should I buy? Since I was on a "budget",I looked at some less-expensive models. After all, I'm not using these for mix-downs or anything. So...I begin listening.I keep going back to this certain model. M-Audio BX5a's. Wow. What a sound!! I purchased these and went home. These things sound even better at home! "70 watts",you may say? Plenty of clean power. I've been cranking these speakers pretty hard lately. I start to get some bass distortion when it's pushed real hard. But...that's what a subwoofer is for. If I really want full bass, I would pick up the subwoofer. For my own listening pleasure, though, these BX5a studio monitors are unbelievable...and VERY convenient. They're easy to move around (if I need to) and a snap to hook up. XLR,TRS,or good old regular 1/4" plug. These baby's take it all. I am really surprised at how much bass response you actually get from these little 5" woofers. These monitors are simple to use, very well built, but, most of all, they just sound fantastic! That's the most important message I'm trying to get across. Have a listen for yourself. Go to your nearest Guitar Center and give them a listen. Compare them with others in the price range. Hopefully, when you get them home, they will sound even better... like mine did. M-Audio...great job on these BX5a studio monitors. I have nothing but praise.

Great Monitors!!!
I listened to these next to a set of comparable sized KRK's and Yamaha's, after letting my ears decide, i chose the M-Audio's. These are the most natural sounding near field monitors I have heard in their price range. Can you buy better? I'm sure you can, but not for this price.
What I like about these monitors:
natural sounding(crisp clear high-end,clear mids and lows, no muddy low mids), plenty of amplifier headroom, no hiss or hum present with good input signal, music sounds musical and not overly dry while remaining un-colored by the monitors.
If you're looking for a good set of project studio monitors, these are the ones.

Great Product for the Price
I picked up the M-audio BX5a pair from guitar center few months ago. Awesome sound compared to how much I paid. Very Well built. If you can spare some change, get yourself the SBX sub by M-audio. I am confirming you that you will not regret. Good Luck.

For the price these monitors are diffently not bad. You can tell they are built to last and the highs sound great. My only problems with them are there is no protection for the silk tweeter and the bass cant match the high. Other than that they have been great
