      M-Audio Axiom 61 2nd Gen 61-Key USB MIDI Keyboard Controller (430587)
Availability:

61-key USB MIDI controller with semi-weighted action, assignable aftertouch, 8 MIDI trigger pads, and more.

The M-Audio Axiom 61 controller combines all the production power and performance you need to get the most from your music software and MIDI gear. More than just a data entry controller, the Axiom 61 features piano-style, semi- weighted keys for a musically satisfying experience. Large dynamic trigger pads make it easy to program beats and trigger one-shot samples—while the knobs, sliders, and buttons deliver complete realtime control over your software. DirectLink mode provides easy, automatic access to common DAW functions including transport, mixer, track pan, and virtual instrument parameters—no complicated setup required. Axiom 61 also features a sleek, angled top panel for easy viewing in any environment.

Serious Production Power
When inspiration strikes, you need a keyboard controller that can translate ideas into killer tracks. That's why Axiom 61 is equipped with an ultra-expressive semi-weighted keyboard and 8 Trigger Finger pads for programming beats with incredible feel. Automatically map Axiom 61 to your DAW with DirectLink—or delve deeper by assigning the pads, encoders, and fader to whatever controls you wish. Each controller can map to just about any MIDI message available, along with independent channel addressing for each. The possibilities are as endless as your imagination.

Axiom Instrument Mode
With other MIDI keyboards, assigning controls to virtual instruments has never been easy. Now thanks to the Axiom 61 controller's new Instrument mode, a single button instantly maps the fader, buttons, and encoders to any virtual instrument inside your DirectLink-compatible host*. You get direct access to synthesis parameters such as filter cutoff, LFO rate, and envelope settings—without having to manually configure anything. It's almost like turning Axiom 61 into a dedicated hardware synth.

Intuitive Design
Whether you're on stage or in the studio, your keyboard controller should fuel your creativity—providing all the right information and controls at your fingertips. That's why we designed Axiom 61 with a sleek angled top panel for easier viewing of the display and improved ergonomics. Smooth rotary encoders deliver precise, continuously variable parameter changes, giving you a hands-on feel for the mix. The backlit LCD screen provides informative feedback from DAW hosts, including on-screen display of parameters, settings, and track/VI names. It all adds up to intuitive control over your MIDI software and hardware.

Mobile Operation
The Axiom series is extremely compact and lightweight and all models are powered directly from your computer's USB bus. Choose the size that's best for your needs, then take your music anywhere you want to go.

  • Worth It

As reviewed by Joshua Garcia on 10/30/2011

This is a really good keyboard and a must have. Its especially good if you will be using it with pro tools for the reason that you can control the mixers with the keyboard. Than again you shouldn't trust my opinion because everyone has different taste but it really did the job for my home studio. All I can say is go try it out and see for yourself. You will like!!!

  • Quality made controler, cumbersome programing

As reviewed by Tobi on 4/2/2011

It's a great keyboard overall. Some presets are shipped with it for reason, protools transport and some virtual instruments. The custom programing of it however is not easy. The enigma programing software is not that great either. I leave it in 1 or 2 programs (15 for protools transport control, 13 for the B4 plugin), and work around because trying to program it messes up my workflow. Thought it was doubling notes on input which was frustration until I did some reading and found that I had to set all my daw inputs to only ch 1 of the axiom input 1 since they merged inputs and the axiom sends on 2 midi banks at once. problems solved. I sometimes use 2 of these live too with the B4 plugin on a laptop and the preset for the B4 (13) in the axioms, works great.

  • Excellent keyboard, but some QC/interface issues

As reviewed by Sean O'Brien on 5/2/2013

Purchased online from guitarcenter.com The first Axiom 61 I received had multiple bad keys. All keys would trigger, but a few had different height, travel and sensitivity than the others, making the keyboard unplayable. Return experience was not great. Order support told me to check local stores. Local manager said he'd look for a replacement then never called back. Eventually (after several weeks and three calls), the Guitar Center RMA department took care of me and sent a replacement. The second Axiom I received is fantastic. Keys feel "real" and are perfectly playable across the range. Obviously, it doesn't compare to a piano action, but we're talking $400. My last $400 controller had all the responsiveness of a laptop keyboard. Basic DAW functions (transport, sliders, track/patch controls) all worked instantly with Ableton. I haven't tried DirectLink with other DAW software yet, but programming for use with non-Directlink software is non-intuitive, bordering on stupidity. The on-screen display and group icons initially tell you little and it takes too many steps to assign a function. The manual is also filled with statements like "Select a button as described earlier" or "Select the active control as described in the next section"... What? Are we trying save paper? It's not terribly difficult after you read the manual and do the same thing a dozen times, but there's no reason a basic midi controller assignment should take 15+ button presses to accomplish! All that said, the stuff which works "out of the box" is excellent and I can easily recommend this keyboard for anyone using Ableton or other DirectLink (Pro Tools, Cubase, etc.) DAWs.
