Overview

This Tattoo Concert Uke takes its design from traditional Hawaiian body ornamentation. The designs were monochromatic, tattooed in black against brown skin. The patterns and layout were strongly geometric and there were many shapes and symbols representing the natural island world: stones, waves, fish, sharks, turtles, rain, sun, and birds. This design is based on a Hawaiian turtle (honu), a symbol of longevity and endurance rendered in a Polynesian tattoo style. The fret markers are stylized sharks teeth.

I purchased this today for my son, as his first ukulele. I own 5 ukeleles of different sizes, and I have become very particular about what I purchase. When I tried this Luna in the store I fell in love with it. I brought it home and compared it with my mahogany Tenor Fender (which was nearly twice the price) and I was shocked that it sounded just as good, and my son (a singer who knows his tone, pitch, etc.,) said he liked the sound of the Luna more than the Fender. It is surprisingly rich in tone, and the distinct design is beautiful. The action (space between the fretboard and strings) is perfect, and although no expert, it appears to be of solid construction. In my opinion this is a steal at $99.99, and I plan on going back to the store and buying another one.

I have a few students who have purchased this ukelele as well as others from Luna. The consistent problem is poor tone and neck quality. Within months the neck becomes bowed and the frets, even out of the box, are projecting off the neck, making movement up and down very uncomfortable. The factory strings are junk as well. Highly recommend not purchasing and looking into the Cordoba, which is what I use. At the same price, the Cordoba outperforms.

Fear the Uke

By Jerry Carson

from Greensboro, NC

Comments about Luna Guitars Tattoo Concert Mahogany Ukulele:

Got this uke a couple of months ago after making the critical mistake of buying & returning one from Amazon. Here's my take: The Good: Stays in tune like a champ. The Luna people deserve high praise for making sure this uke holds tuning very well. Good job guys! Plays very easily. The fretting is great as is the finger board. You don't have to work hard to get a good sound. Again, well done Luna! It's easy on the eyes. I'm not one for cutesy designs but the design is not overly gaudy & besides, it's called the "Tattoo" so I guess it could've been worse. Good tone. This little uke has a surprisingly good sound. It's not the tinny Tiny Tim sounding uke of old. You gotta" love that. The Bad: Not much to say here, playas'. I suppose the one criticism I have is I would've liked to see the finish of this uke with a couple of coats of varnish. The finish is a little flat & who among us doesn't love a shiny uke? All in all, lovers of Uke, this is a great instrument at an awesome price. If you're thinkin' about rockin' the uke, you can't go wrong here. I've enjoyed the heck out of mine & it's made me take a look at the other Ukes in the Luna family.

I LOVE IT!

By alex hernandez

from Sherman Oaks

Comments about Luna Guitars Tattoo Concert Mahogany Ukulele:

It is awesome, and has a great tone, looks absolutely stunning. This beats my old Lanakai. There is one very minor drawback, and that's that the weight distribution is off by a bit. The weight seems off and centered at the neck, but that problem is with most ukuleles. The body is rather lightweight, really. This Ukulele met my expectations for a concert ukulele. I don't know about reliability, since I haven't really had it for that long, but it does seem delicate, so one should be careful with it, you know, don't bang it on the wall or anything. The wood seems like what you'd see on high end Koa wood ukuleles, but is actually fine rosewood and mahogany. Comes with a bag too. Oh, and has standard Aquila Nylgut strings, so good sound and reliable strings. In conclusion: High quality at a good price and includes a gig bag, but due to regular ukulele limitations, such as nylon strings, you've got to wait for the strings to fully stretch, which can take a while. Otherwise, great ukulele.

Pleased

By Rebecca LaBella

from Corning, NY

Comments about Luna Guitars Tattoo Concert Mahogany Ukulele:

I had visited a Guitar Center in LA and tried several, so I had an idea what I wanted when I got home and ordered online. Still, you never know. I was pleased to received the Luna Ukelele quickly, well packed, and in fine condition. I was pleasantly surprised that there was a cloth case included that I didn't expect. It tunes well and the frets are positioned perfectly because the chords are tuned perfectly as well. I'm very happy with my purchase.

Great concert Uke...

By Tamara Ross

from Denton, Texas

Comments about Luna Guitars Tattoo Concert Mahogany Ukulele:

Ordered this Ukelele for my son who plays the electric guitar, mostly metal type music and he loves it. The sound is great and the concert size is perfect! Love the tattoo design. Nicely built instrument.

Sounds good, and a good value.

By David Hoshor

from Stow, OH

Comments about Luna Guitars Tattoo Concert Mahogany Ukulele:

I've had the Luna Tattoo Concert for a couple of months now, and I like it. In particular, the ukulele resonates well. The body of the uke is wider than most concert ukuleles and I think that it helps the low end sustain that I hear. The frets are accurately placed and are in tune at least for the first five frets where I normally play. For the first month or so I played it with the stock Aquila strings, but then switched to a set of brown Worth BM strings. I think the Worth strings made an improvement in the sound. The sound is mellower, and the strings are softer feeling and less "squeaky". The Luna Tattoo Concert isn't fancy. There's no binding or purling on the ukulele. It's little more than a lightweight plywood box, but it appears to be well made, and the "tattoo" pattern etched on the top give it a distinctive look. The silk screened logo on the headstock is kind of cheap looking, but it's a minor concern to me. It sounds good and is enjoyable to play. I think the Tattoo concert is a good value, especially since it also includes a lightly padded gig bag.

My first ukelele!

By BRIAN CHEN

from New York, New York

Comments about Luna Guitars Tattoo Concert Mahogany Ukulele:

I recently went down to get a ukelele, and this was on an average price of 100$ and it seemed like good quality. It comes with a bag, so I didn't need to buy one. I started playing with it, and it felt really nice. I'm quite impressed, for it being my first ukelele.

Great Uke!

By Elizabeth Van Kleek

from Hillsboro, OR

Comments about Luna Guitars Tattoo Concert Mahogany Ukulele:

I purchased this ukulele just today and I love it already! Having already a basic knowledge of ukuleles and how to play them (and playing the guitar and piano too), I knew I wanted to go with a good brand such as Luna. The sound that comes out is the perfect pitch; high but not sharp and annoying to listen to. It has the perfect sound for almost anything that you would want to play. The color is beautiful as well and the tattoo design on it making it very appealing to the eye. I would recomend this ukulele to more of a higher level player, not professional but not just a beginner. If you're looking for a good, non-electic ukulele, this is definatley one of my top choices. And for the price, it is well worth it. Luna Guitars is a fabulous comapny that makes high quality products!

Great Ukulele for the price

By TIM SMIEJEK

from Chicago, IL

Comments about Luna Guitars Tattoo Concert Mahogany Ukulele:

I bought this Ukulele after doing a decent amount of research on line, watching demos by musicians, etc... all who recommended it as being a great Ukulele for the price and comparable to more expensive ones. I did searches for best ukuleles under $250 and this was consistently recommended. I was concerned it might stay in tune or have a good sound. But after owning and playing it for a while I've really enjoyed it and had no issues with tuning or sound. I felt it compared well to the more expensive ones I played. For this price and if you're starting out or just want to add another instrument to your collection it's a great option.

Cheaply made; sharp fret ends

By patricia maurice

from mishawaka in

Comments about Luna Guitars Tattoo Concert Mahogany Ukulele:

I ordered this uke for my son and when it came it I was surprised by how light and cheaply made it was considering former reviews. The fret ends were very sharp and it would have been nasty to play. I exchanged for a similarly priced but much more solidly and well made instrument that was the same price
