Overview

The Luna Guitars Honu Soprano Ukulele boasts decorations inspired from traditional Hawaiian body tattoos. Hawaiian tattoo patterns and layout were strongly geometric with many shapes and symbols representing the natural island world: stones, waves, fish, sharks, turtles, rain, sun, birds. This design is based on a Hawaiian turtle (honu), a symbol of longevity and endurance rendered in a Polynesian tattoo style. The fret markers are stylized shark's teeth.

First off, this is one of the best ukuleles you can buy for the money. The strings suplied are durable, and sound great, and the tuners, while not terribly sharp, get the job done. There is little to no buzzing, even when you get into faster and more intense strumming. The finish and details are quality, as well as the turtle engraving around the sound hole. HOWEVER, it should be noted that the actual look of the wood is different than what the picture indicated. The texture is the same, but the wood is a darker and deeper brown which personally looks much much better that the included picture. All notes and chords sound crisp and clear when tuned well, and I would recommend a $10 Lankai clip on tuner that does a great job. A case is also included. It is a decent quality soft case that will not protect it from a bad fall, but is a good choice for traveling with as it has two back straps and a side handle. The bag also includes a small pouch that can be used for chord charts or a tuner. The action (space between the string and fretboard) is rather small, and the strings are not all that tight which makes playing relatively easy for beginners. Your hands can slide easily along the neck, which makes switching chords and finger picking easy. In review, this is a very very good pick for a ukulele, if your a beginner or someone interested in a soprano. Good luck!

I bought this instrument for my 6 year-old niece; I bought it based on the four 5-star reviews it had gotten, and because it looked like a beautiful instrument. It is, in fact, lovely. The included "tuner" (a pitch-pipe) was way off - the A was fine, but the E was high, the C was low, and the G was high, too. I tried to tune by ear; but the intonation is way off. I used a vibration-sensing tuner, to find the fretted E played on the C-string was more than a quarter-tone high. OK, OK. Cheap uke = lousy intonation. I get it. I realize you shouldn't have grandiose expectations for a budget uke; but even for a starter instrument, it should be possible to tune it properly to itself, or at least get pretty close. Add to that the egregiously bad pitch-pipe, and you end up with a starter player on an out-of-tune instrument (which makes for painful listening!) or a frustrated experienced player. That gets it two stars, despite the pretty turtle design around the sound hole - which is beautiful; and if you want a uke for an accessory, and you don't mind it being impossible to tune satisfactorily, then go for it. But if you're looking for a starter instrument with any sort of longevity at all, then look elsewhere. An inspired learner would almost certainly get frustrated with this one after only a few months and need something better, anyway.

Comments about Luna Guitars Honu Soprano Ukulele:

I use it for learning to play, practicing at home and for my own amusement. It is still takes a bit getting used to the smaller fret board as opposed to the concert size I also have, but isn't really a problem. The sound is very good, the action is excellent making it a pleasure to play.

Comments about Luna Guitars Honu Soprano Ukulele:

Bought this as a gift for my daughter for Christmas.
It seems to hold a tune and is very becoming to hold and look at.
The intonation is lacking but that goes with the price.
I was hoping the etching would be more pronounced but still happy with it!

      great first ukulele

      By Kyler Stephensen

      from Boise, ID

Comments about Luna Guitars Honu Soprano Ukulele:

I've had my Luna Honu for about 3 weeks and absolutely love it. It's made very well, sounds crisp and clean but full and mellow too. My roommate bought a Cordoba 20CM Concert and it's holds up well against the Cordoba. It's a nice contrast to a Concert size Uke. I am just a beginner with my 1st ukulele but I am very happy with the quality for the money. I would buy another Luna in a heart beat.

      First uke

      By Bridget Lally

      from Grand Rapids, MI

Comments about Luna Guitars Honu Soprano Ukulele:

After my birthday I had some money left over from babysitting and, since I am also a guitar player I thought, why not get a ukulele? So, I picked this one. I loved everything about it. My only problem was that the strings move when you strum too hard, so you have to be careful, but other then that it sounds amazing. I bought it when there weren't any reviews, and I didn't know much about ukuleles. I've had it for over six months and it still plays just like new. I totally recommend this for anyone getting their first uke, because this is a pretty great one for the price range.

      Attractive, easy to play

      By Vicki Johnson

      from Amherst, VA

Comments about Luna Guitars Honu Soprano Ukulele:

I purchased this ukulele for my daughter for Christmas. It was obviously her favorite gift. With the included chord chart she began playing the very same day and even posted a video of her playing it and singing on YouTube within a few days. Her only problem was that one of the notes on the included pitch pipe was very hard to blow and so didn't make a clear note to be able to tune to easily. I think she ended up tuning to our Yamaha keyboard. Otherwise we are very pleased with this ukulele.

      Very Nice Beginner Uke!

      By Marissa Villarosa

      from Las Vegas, Nevada

Comments about Luna Guitars Honu Soprano Ukulele:

I bought this ukulele as a beginner ukulele to see if I might have an interest in it. I didn't see much reviews on here as I saw on the Lanikai LU-21 Standard that I was thinking of getting so I was a bit worried. To my surprise, this was an OUTSTANDING ukulele. At first the only flaw I found was that the uku would not stay in tune, but I learned it takes a day or two for Aquila Strings to stretch... heh. [x As I start to get better on the ukulele, I might buy a concert from Luna Guitars since I've fallen in love with their unique designs. :) I regret not buying a concert sooner since a soprano is quite small, but it's good for a beginner like me. I suggest this ukulele to people, as I can barely stop playing it!
