MOST SENSITIVE SNARE AVAILABLE!

By Gtron

from San Diego, CA

Comments about Ludwig Supraphonic Snare Drum:

You can not find a more sensitive snare, than the Supra-Phonic! It will pick up and project every tap and rim shot! It was Bonham's #1 and it should be yours as well. Play it loudly and proudly!

The classic snare drum

By drummerD

from Austin, TX

Comments about Ludwig Supraphonic Snare Drum:

The Ludwig Supraphonic is the holy grail of snare drums. No matter how many new manufacturers attempt to reinvent the wheel, drummers keep coming back to the supra as the workhorse of the gigging and recording worlds. This is by far the most recorded snare in history (probably on all genres of music), and there is a reason. The sound can best be described as classic. This is what a snare is meant to sound like at all different tunings. Down low with loose snares, there is a deep and throaty voice. Up tight, the snare brightens out with a crisp POP. I find that it works best right in the middle of the tuning range--this gives an articulate, full-bodied sound that will work well in any genre. The supra is basically the most versatile, best sounding snare drum ever created (and generations of drummers will attest to this).

Comments about Ludwig Supraphonic Snare Drum:

I have been playing drums for 42years started playing ludwig in the 60's and I still play them. I just bought another LM402 I have played most every brand out there most sound too tight then there's the one's that sound's like a cardboard box then there is ludwig the only one that sound's like a real snare drum. I have two ludwig kit's one at church and one I tour with.

Classic sound can't be beaten!

By Chris

from Orinda, CA

Comments about Ludwig Supraphonic Snare Drum:

I am in love with this snare. It has great crack and projection, but also has great sensitivity. Very versatile snare, really no style it couldn't be used for. Even though I usually prefer wooden snares, this thing is my exception to the rule. I love this thing with a coated ambassador over an ambassador side- can't be beaten!

Ludwig Supra-Phonic Snare Drum

By Rack

from PA

Comments about Ludwig Supraphonic Snare Drum:

I've had the chrome 6 1/2 x 14 model for several shows now. I'm very impressed with how easy it tunes and the overall sound. Up high it really cut through everything. I prefer mine mid-range and it has great punch and sustain. I play Evans heads and the sticks really bounce off this drum. It has enough impact for heavier rock like Metallica and Alice in Chains but also has some smoothness when we're doing Skynard or Shinedown. It is pretty loud and I've found I can't use it on ballads - its volume just dwarfs the other instruments in those situations. Overall a great drum. It has a nice appearance as well, setting off almost any drum kit. I would recommend it.

The Best Snare on Earth !

By noahr31

from Oakdale, CA

Comments about Ludwig Supraphonic Snare Drum:

I do not own this snare drum but, I have played on it before. A buddy of mine has it. I must say, this snare drum is the best. It can be tuned really easily, due to how many lugs it has. With this snare you can have any tone you want no matter what type of music you play. It is crisp and clean. I played on the 6.5"x14". It has 10 lugs for easy tuning. What more could you ask for. This snare is a little expensive, but your money will not be wasted. I can Guarantee you that. Go buy your own today. I will have mine soon. Don't miss out and get this snare right away!

An historic snare, but...

By jonathan fogg

from Nor'east

Comments about Ludwig Supraphonic Snare Drum:

I put off buying this snare due to all the hype over the years. Well, I finally caved. I was fairly impressed with the build quality although it's really nothing special. The tried and true el cheapo strainer really had to go, so I replaced it with the P-86. While it's better, it's not all that either. There's been more said about the sound of this snare than any other and that should be the main focus. It will sound just like Bonzo's snare, if that's what your aim is. I like it for it's crisp, sensitive and retro sound that it evokes. It's not, however, my 'go to' snare. I guess I still prefer a wood shell snare for an all around sound. A bit overpriced but you get to own a piece of history.

Ludwig, Supraphonic at it's finest

By Dynodrumer

from Undisclosed

Comments about Ludwig Supraphonic Snare Drum:

I have played Ludwig's on and off for the last 40 years. After all those years, I have been playing my old 70's Supra-phonic at the gigs and it still gets great response for other musicians. If you are in need of a snare that has everything from High's, Mid's and even Woody lows the Ludwig is your snare. You cannot go wrong with this baby, I have collected Supra-phonic 400's 402's, and the Supersensitive models over the years but my favorite is the LM400 5x14. Just take my advice get one you will not be disappointed.

Ultimate snare

By Mig

from San Gabriel, ca

Comments about Ludwig Supraphonic Snare Drum:

Dude this snare drum is nothing short of amazing. It's definatly hands down the best snare drum I've ever played. The snare plays great at any tunning range and has an amazing dynamic playing range. You could be playing the softest of soft and you could still hear those snares snaring away. I've owned other snare at about have the price of this snare and to me, they just don't cut it. If you're in the market for a snare, I suggest you check this out, not to mention this snare was also used by John bonham and van halen and many others. I suggest you check out the led Zeppelin live recordings: how the west was won to get a great perception of the great sound this Ludwig brings out. Also I have to mention that I've had people come up to me and say they love my snare sound. Can imagine playing any other snare.

LM402

By billy

from Henderson, NV

Comments about Ludwig Supraphonic Snare Drum:

this snare can do anything. 6.5x14 chrome on alluminum version. rim shot kills live, can be very sublte yet responsive for ghost notes, doesn't ring forever so it's great to record with, has the widest tuning range of any snare i've ever owned. put a remo coated ambassador on top and hazy ambassador on bottom and thats all you need. I play worship, rock, ska/reggae, hip-hop, and metal with this drum and there's no compromise anywhere.

you must play drums otherwise you wouldn't be checking out this snare...if that is the case and you don't own this drum, you should buy it right now or just stop playing drums all together. It is the BEST snare you can get hands down for the money. If I could choose one snare for both the recording studio and live, it's this one. Stop reading the reviews and stop being cheep. Buy it now!!!

OH GOODNESS.

By Cole

from Tulsa, Oklahoma

Comments about Ludwig Supraphonic Snare Drum:

I went to this guys house where he kind of gave me a lesson. Then he pulled out his 14x6.5 chrome Supraphonic and was like, "puberty will run it's course when you hear this drum." And he was NOT kidding. That was the best snare I've ever heard/gotten the chance to play on.

Comments about Ludwig Supraphonic Snare Drum:

I bought mine because it wasTHE drum for The Wrecking Crew (YouTube has a great video on this bunch; if you are a musician, you should see the video), and it does sound like what you hear on most of the popular music from the '60s on. The sheet is one-piece aluminum alloy, same as the Acrolite--but chrome plated. Older versions did the plating wrong and it tended to flake off: turns out you have to plate aluminum with copper, then nickel, then chrome. Now these beauties shine forever. To my ears, the plating doesn't change the sound in any way you can hear. The Acrolite can be made to sound very similar. In fact, a black-anodized form for the Black Beauty line could be sweet--especially since Ludwig also makes a chrome over brass shell snare..

Aluminum is a great metal for a drum; with thin shells, it almost sound like wood, with thicker shells, it almost sounds like a .357 Magnum. In both cases, it has probably the widest tuning range of any drum material I personally have heard. So with a nice, hard-chrome finish, ten lugs to play with (I have the tube-lugged version, can't say it sounds better; I just like tube lugs), decent rims and snares, only that cheap, piece d'merde, P-85 strainer needs to be upgraded right away and you are off to the races. The Ludwig Weather Master head is actually OK. It seems a bit thick and almost rubbery compared to an Ambassador, but has a nice sound. I personally have found Nirvana with a Fiberskyn Amabassador, but we all hear differently. I found a coated Ambassador a trifle ringy, but a PowerStroke was nice. A friend swears by Vintage As on Supra, but he has the Super-Sensitive version. If that makes a difference, I couldn't tell.

Bottom line: if you are thinking you need to seriously upgrade your sound (and don't already own one of these), when it comes to your snare sound, this drum ought to be your first consideration. In the opinion of a LOT of drummers, if you can only own one good snare, this is it.
