The antique black anodized shell, chrome hardware, and imperial lugs make the Black Beauty strikingly beautiful.

If you need even more volume and presence, this 14 x 6-1/2" snare is for you. It delivers meaty rimshots with clarity and projection when slammed, but still retains ultimate sensitivity when lightly tapped.

I recently bought the 6.5x14 with imperial lugs. As a musician that plays a variety of genres in various venues, I can, without a doubt, say that this is the most versatile, best sounding snare I have ever had the pleasure of playing (I have yet to get my hands on a brady or a craviotto). Some venues I have played have been pubs walled with brick that lend for some nightmarish acoustic circumstances, but even in situations like those, this snare cuts and still manages to sound great while receiving dozens of compliments. It can be sensitive, loud, resonant, or quiet and even muted (if that's the sound you're looking for- but I recommend letting the dynamics of this snare SING). It fits jazz, rock, blues, r&b and absolutely everything in between. It sounds fantastic with brushes, hot rods, nylon tips, or simple old fashioned hickory and will give you the sound you are looking for, whether you're in the studio for a session or playing a gig, mic'd or not- the sound is superb and definitely projects with definitive warmth that I have yet to find in other snares- and the black nickel finish is absolutely STUNNING. The stock heads are actually decent, but I recently picked up a coated ambassador with a hazy ambassador snare side. The stock snares sound great as well. I have puresounds, but have yet to put them on because the sound i'm getting is already really sweet. I have a spare set of die cast hoops and tried them out, they bring even MORE volume to the drum, but the stock triple flanged's feel great and give higher sensitivity and stick rebound. This drum certainly lives up to its hype. I realize the price tag is a little steep, but if you're looking into purchasing a snare like this, you've probably already done your homework on it like me. If you're on the fence about buying it, let me help you out and tell you to just splurge and get it. I receive countless compliments about the sound I get from this snare and even get friends and fellow drummers asking if they can play it in their next show (yeah right!). I am extremely picky about my snare sound and have never actually owned a brass snare before, so this is a first for me coming off of two gretsch maple snares; a 5x14 and a 6.5x14, and a couple other customs. I used to vow to stick with maple, but this snare completely changed me. For a while I was looking into the lm402 (the 6.5x14 supraphonic) after reading several reviews, but decided on the 6.5x14 BB because I can get the supra sound out of this snare, but can't get the BB sound out of a supra. Spend the extra cash get this snare, you will certainly not regret it. The quality is superb and I am proud to finally be a member of the ludwig family with the majestic and highly sought-after black beauty.

I dunno about Ludwig anymore. This is supposed to be the Martin HD-28 of snare drums. They currently list it under "Additional Snares" and yet this is supposed to be the most iconic instrument on the planet..! Anyway I've owned one, a tube-lugged Supra, 5 x 14". A decently made drum, fit and finish flawless. It was fitted with 2.3mm hoops and the (yawn) P-85 strainer and wires, along with Ludwig heads. Sounded OK out of the box, but didn't turn my head sonically, although it was beautiful to look at. I tried a standard Remo setup, Ambassador over hazy and like any metal snare with triple-flange hoops, it was terribly ringy. Using a Studio Ring seemed to block the drum rather than just tone down the overring. Stopped by a GC and played a Pearl Sensitone II (same drum, die-casts standard) which sounded far better; sold the BB in disgust. If you buy one of these, be sure to install die-cast rims and you'll be fine with nearly any head combo AND obtain an iconic drum in the bargain. For the money, though IMHO an Acrolyte is a far better bargain from Ludwig and has a much better sound. Sorry, but until Ludwig gets better at marketing their brand, I can only give three stars. I agree it SHOULD be five--but you shouldn't have to hot rod a drum like this straight out of the box!

Comments about Ludwig Supraphonic Black Beauty Snare Drum:

I now own three Ludwig Superphonic Snare Drums; 1968 5 x 14, 1969 6 1/2 x 14 and a 2016 6 1/2 x 14 "Black Beauty". I was steadily working my way towards what I knew to be the best snare drum made. In the past I purchased Pearl, DW, and Tama all the while knowing that I wouldn't find what I'd be looking for until I finally purchased the "Black Beauty"! And boy was I right! The tone and dynamic range, sensitivity and responsiveness and ability to cut with high volume Rock and Blues Music I favor and that my Band plays. Couldn't be happier, long in coming, smiling for a many day forward!

Comments about Ludwig Supraphonic Black Beauty Snare Drum:

The greats you know and love used this snare for a reason. There is a reason it's as much as it is for those of you complaining about the price. There is one negative to this snare and that is it and it's that simple. They should use a nicer throw-off on such a prestigious snare. Don't get me wrong, still plays and tunes perfectly like you'd expect, but the throw off just feels like it doesn't belong, even gives off that vibe just looking at it. That is my only complaint and the throw off works perfectly. If you're a collector, or a serious drummer, all professional musicians will agree, this is a MUST OWN.

Comments about Ludwig Supraphonic Black Beauty Snare Drum:

I have the 14x5" model and am very happy with it. It has a nice sharp sound and minimal ring. The drum also is beautifully made, and should fit with any set. The hoops are very robust and the drum never goes out of tune. The P-85 throw off could be more precise, but works fine.

Comments about Ludwig Supraphonic Black Beauty Snare Drum:

There are definitely things I like about the sound of the snare, however, not for the price! It looks beautiful but the sound is very flat. I've had a very difficult time trying to get it to not be flat or dead sounding. Unless you tighten the lugs super tight, they'll loosen up on you while playing meaning you have to have it tuned super high, almost like a soprano snare. I'm experienced and have been playing for 18 years. I would not recommend this snare just because the price is insane for the sound. You can get other, cheaper snares to sound good.

      Real Nice Snare BUT

      By Joseph Nocella

      from Wantagh, N.Y.

Comments about Ludwig Supraphonic Black Beauty Snare Drum:

Years ago, after playing about 15 snares in a drum room in Manny's in NYC, I purchased a Ludwig Bronze 6.5x14. It sounded better than drums that were twice the price. I've always been partial to Ludwig snares because they sound better to me. So last year I bought a Black Beauty and when I got it home, I realized the shell was full of small scratches. After some back and forth w/the salesman, Ludwig replaced it with a new drum. Nobody could explain why the shell was so scratched up. But there is a "B" stock out there so please inspect your drum very closely because you can't trust anyone anymore.

Hit Every snare in the store

      By Tim Pasio

      from Valencia, Ca

Comments about Ludwig Supraphonic Black Beauty Snare Drum:

I've been playing over 30 years. I've owned Pearl, Tama, Dw, and have hit about every snare imaginable. I was looking for a snare to replace my 20 year old Pearl Maple. I sat, and hit about 10 snares. I than hit this one. There was absolutely No comparison. I re hit a few, especially the Pearls, and DWs, but again, I kept coming back to this snare. It sold itself. the tone is crisp, yet with no over ring. The 2.3 mm triple flanged hoops almost sounded like die cast, but, still with a nice open, resonating controlled sound. To me, everything else sound like tin, compared to this snare. Bought it, took it home, put an Evans, Reverse Dot on it. I've hit allot of snares, but this thing sounds like it's 3 times the price. These are limited addition drums. Only so many are made each year, so if you find one, you owe it to yourself to play one. Gorgeous, perfect for live, and studio. I now know why my friends have been recommending this snare to me for years.

I purchased this snare at a local store and after I brought it home, I noticed many small scratches on the shell. Ludwig took it back and sent me a new one in perfect condition. The snare sounds great. No complaints except for the P85 throw-off. I can't believe they use what feels likes a very cheap part on an expensvie snare drum. This drum should come with the P86 throw off for the price you pay.

Comments about Ludwig Supraphonic Black Beauty Snare Drum:

Will be a great jazz drum once Ludwig drumhead is smoothed out. Shouldn't need a break-in period to smooth out head in this price range. But, it's a beauty and crisp response is a delight. I play and sing in a jazz group and a smaller trio. In the smaller group, the audience sees the snare and soft brushes are most important. The head will smooth out eventually. Shouldn't have to replace it.

Wow! I play loud music and this thing cuts through everything. My guitar player plays through three 4x12 cabs and two heads, my bass player plays through two 4x10 orange cabs and it cuts through all of that at max volume. I'm unsure of how it fares with light or soft music but with Loud music, this is the best.
