This Ludwig P4 Practice Pad was designed by world-renowned drummer Pat Petrillo and features three playing levels and four playing surfaces that provide a variety of feels, sounds, and responses. This unique and versatile design will improve a drummer's overall hand technique, accuracy, and coordination by providing multiple playing surfaces on the same side of the drum pad.
The Ludwig P4 practice drum pad fits neatly on top of your snare drum, table top, or into any snare-stand basket. It also has an 8mm thread, so it can be attached to a cymbal stand. Each pad has a unique sound and feel, corresponding to the playing characteristics of different drums and cymbals. Pat Petrillo has been successfully using the P4 for practice and teaching at Drummers Collective in New York, and now everyone has the opportunity to experience the feel and dexterity development that the Ludwig P4 drum pad can offer.
The large black pad that comprises the bottom level has the feel of a snare-style practice pad and the blue surface on the left side of the second level feels more like a hi-hat. The right side of the second level is soft—like a floor tom—and the upper tier resembles the feel of a ride.
"I wanted to replicate the feel of moving around the drum set when I practice on a pad," says drummer Pat Petrillo. "The P4 allows me to really work on independence techniques."
Pat is recognized as one of today's most accomplished and versatile drummers, having performed and recorded with a wide variety of artists from many genres of music including Gloria Gaynor, Patti LaBelle, Dee-Lite, Patti Smythe, and Glen Burtnik, as well jazz guitarist Ed Hamilton, and most recently the world music group Oko Jumu.

Nice to have the variability in playing surfaces and the pad itself is high quality. I did try stand mounting in my home office (got to take a break now and then as well as being able to adjust height etc). The problem is the pad mount quality is low and broke almost immediately. I would get another but just isn't made for that setup.
Yes, I bought this online without trying it out. But based on the videos I saw on YouTube made me take the chance and get this. I do like the way that the pads are different and the way it is arranged so you practice moving your hands around while playing. I like the fact that each pad feels and sounds different to get a bit of variation, but sometimes hitting the blue and red pads with your stick makes a dead sounding sound of sorts, so what I do is put those silicone tips on my drumsticks and everything's ok. Overall I'm pretty satisfied with this practice pad in terms of its function and portability. It's unique in its own way. I've had this for a couple of months now and I enjoy using it. If you're looking for a practice pad set that you can arrange to simulate playing with a drum set more I recommend getting the bigger kits.
Well...it looked so cool and unique, I thought I would try it out..and for me, it ROCKS! I OWN 3 pads, Vater, HQ, Aquarian..This feels as good, and better than HQ for me, because it is NOT bouncy..its natural. The levels really make you work your coordination, an obvious benefit, and it makes my practice more productive and FUN The top level is real hard..maybe TOO hard, but, it's suppose to fell like a ride, and it serves that purpose. 4 pads in 1! Amazing, innovative, and useful! Get it, you won't be disapointed.
I recently bought the P4 . I bought it sight - unseen on recomendation from someone . The different playing surfaces are just not that great of an option . I dont like the sound of the " alternative " surfaces nor do I like the feel of them . The fact that they are at different levels does not simulate a drumset . The worst part about the P4 is that the primary surface is average at best . I much prefer my Vater pad . Like I said , I bought the P4 sight unseen ...that was my mistake . Some people may try it and love it . I know Pat Patrillo has demo`d a lot of ways to use the pad so clearly it does have its uses for other drummers . It just does not work for me . So try it before you buy it .
