Not Made in the USA

By Robert Boston

Comments about Ludwig Die-Cast Snare Drum Hoop Bottom:

Although the manufacturers make it difficult to know where a given item is made these days, even go as far as labeling items as "engineered in the USA" and other euphemisms to hide the true country of origin. Since this was a rather high end Ludwig product, and priced as such - a die cast rim for $70+, I wrongfully assumed it was made in the USA as many of Ludwigs offerings lately. But I was somewhat dissappointed to get a box clearly stating "Made in Taiwan". I wish Guitar Center would state in it's listings where its offerings are manufactured. It matters to some of us. I would also say that this rim could have had the casting artifacts ground a bit smoother and had a thicker brass plating on it. I plan to have it replated before it is installed on the custom set I am building. So in the end I payed top dollar for a mediocre product. Interestingly, I also purchased some Ludwig floor tom legs that were made in Monroe, Il. and they just exude a higher quality - look and feel about them - thick chrome. I guess my standards are high as when I started, most all of the drums were made in America, except for some very low end Japanese sets. Lastly, the Drum Workshop 9000 (top of the line) cymbal stands and snare stand I purchased last year - all made in Taiwan. DW goes out of it's way to stress it's American quality, so come on guys lets have some truth in advertising. Some of us patriots want to support American manufacturing.
