Overview

Breakbeats by Ludwig marks the return of Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson to the drums of his youth. With a setup compact enough for an apartment, cab and a coffeehouse, Breakbeats by Ludwig are an ideal companion for the gigging, urban percussionist.

The driving force behind these drums are the 7-ply poplar shells that produce punchy, focused attack with dry, clipped resonance. A 45-degree bearing edge ensures quick, classic shell response, while triple-flanged hoops will endure the best rimshots you can produce. Positioned on an included lift for optimum reach, Breakbeat's 16" x 14" bass drum, 13" x 13" floor tom, 10" x 7" tom and 14" x 5" matching wood snare not only fit into tight places, but also break down quickly.

This shell pack also includes velvet storage bags for a convenient transport option. Additionally, you can use the bags to reduce volume by draping each bag over each drum. Available in three durable wrap finishes, Breakbeats by Questlove has a footprint as "tight" as their namesake.

Cymbals and hardware sold separately.

I used this kit at two different small venue gigs right after I received them and I got compliments from people in the audience and my band mates after both of them. They, and I were impressed with the overall sound quality of this kit. Of course they needed a good tuning up after I un-packed and put them together, but once that was done, they were ready to rock. I believe they are very good quality, considering their price. So if you're looking for a compact, easy to transport kit for smaller venues, check this kit out! Plus, if you need more volume, you can always mike 'em.

I really like the portability of this kit. I put new heads on it immediately so I don't know what the stock heads sound like. With the new heads a good tuning it sounds great. I have used it in the studio and live several times and it gets compliments from sound engineers every time. I was disappointed in the bass drum platform. It is very poorly designed. The pedal attachment area leaves no versatility in where/how your pedal attaches and is offset. It made it impossible to get my beater to hit in a good spot on the head. I am surprised how bad the design of this piece is. I had to buy the Gibraltar platform to fix that issue. The rack tom bracket and floor tom leg brackets also came loose in the first two weeks of owning the kit. Once tightened they have worked great.

Big sound

By Lyndon Smith

Comments about Ludwig Breakbeats by Questlove 4-Piece Shell Pack:

I am amazed!! The sound is a lot bigger than the drums. Great tone. I also love the look. I was tired of lifting bigger sets. This kit is a perfect fit. Good looking also. I would recommend if you want to simplify your live setup. Great job Questlove you nailed it!!!

Amazing little kit

By Henry Jolley

from Mobile, Alabama

Comments about Ludwig Breakbeats by Questlove 4-Piece Shell Pack:

After 47 years of drumming and using everything that has been produced by the American and import drum companies, the new Questlove Breakbeats drum kit is KILLER! The amazing sounds coming from this kit defies all reason. Something this small actually shouldn't sound this big, but Ludwig has hit another home run with the addition of this in their line. These rival some of the more expensive drum kits with half the weight and a much smaller footprint. You wondering about buying a small kit.....think about it no longer! Go get it, you will not be disappointed.

Comments about Ludwig Breakbeats by Questlove 4-Piece Shell Pack:

Do not underestimate this drum set. There is so much to this set that you just need to experience. I play rock and punk and with two ply batter and a one ply reso tuned just right, these toms sing! On the kick I put a ported reso tuned higher than the kick - which has an emad 2 with the bigger foam ring, and I get a killer punch and sound without the use of a pillow or anything inside it. On my snare I put a one ply head and a hazy 300 makes the snare craxk. The hardware on the drums is clean and classic looking, you can tell it's a Ludwig, and the finish is so classic looking. I went with the black sparkle option and it catches and reflects light so well. With the tunings I've given it on my free time, this set is so very versatile. What can I say that hasn't been said by other people singing it's praises but this little set has stlen my heart.

As I said, DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE THIS SET

        Amazing bass and sound

        By Dennis Hritz

        from Sharon,Pennsylvania

Comments about Ludwig Breakbeats by Questlove 4-Piece Shell Pack:

I just tried this kit out at GC. The color is appealing. The bass drum is amazing. Too think that depth and punch comes from such a small bass. The batter heads on the toms are Remo Pinstripes. The snare has a great crisp sound. The bass lifter is sturdy, and can be removed with a drum key. the bass hoops are not wood. The snare is wood . The tom mount is a regular mount. I would suggest upgrading the floor tom legs. I am seriously considering this kit for use in small clubs, musicals, and even in my teaching studio.

        Worth It

        By Fernando Rangel

        from Phoenix, AZ

Comments about Ludwig Breakbeats by Questlove 4-Piece Shell Pack:

Kick: Miraculous tone and feel for the size. Good balance of punch and warmth with enough give and rebound to be playable. Snare: Warm and woody with some ring mostly due to cheap stock heads. Ludwig could easily market this as a wood alternative to the Acrolite. Toms: The rack tom is surprisingly big and projects very well in front of the kit. Floor tom is a GREAT 13" tom, but not versatile for rock. Jazz drummers could work with it. Summary: 100% gig worthy. The kit is worth the price with just kick, toms and cases. The fact that Ludwig throws in a great snare ensures that this kit has no rival.

        Great Sound and Nice Looking!

        By Rick

        from Sacramento, California

Comments about Ludwig Breakbeats by Questlove 4-Piece Shell Pack:

I purchased a Ludwig Breakbeats kit a few days ago to have a portable kit that I could take to rehearsals and gigs in small spaces. After a few modifications, I?m quite please with it. I replaced all the heads except the resonant head on the kick drum: it got an Aquarian Super-Kick II on the batter side. The toms got Evans Level 360 Genera 2 coated batters and clear resonant heads. The improvement was worth the extra $100. The snare drum is the weak link. The snare throw-off is clunky and difficult to adjust. The heads (as with the rest of the kit) are Remo?s low-end from China. I?m using a ?69 Slingerland COB that I found on eBay (it?s a really sweet sounding drum!) The included drum bags won?t offer much protection, as they?re basically draw-string laundry bags; but they offer a bit of scratch protection when I load them in my car. The Azure Sparkle wrap is gorgeous. Bottom line: if you?re willing to invest in some better heads and snare drum, you?ll have a great sounding, good-looking little kit that?s a pleasure to play.

        Decent Kit

        By Joshua

        from NH

Comments about Ludwig Breakbeats by Questlove 4-Piece Shell Pack:

This is a nice little kit that sounds surprisingly good and is versatile for its size. That said, because the has been built down to a price, I've noticed some quality issues. Out of the box, the snare's top rim had some minor discoloring/corrosion on it, and the floor tom shell's bottom edge had a small dent (where the drum head contacts the shell). Both of these issues are basically cosmetic and were too minor for me to want to bother re-packing up the kit and exchanging it, but you get what you pay for.

Comments about Ludwig Breakbeats by Questlove 4-Piece Shell Pack:

I truly wish I found or bought this kit a long time ago. It's so small I literally don't even break down the drums and throw them in the back of my truck with the cap on my truck. The only thing I break down are my cymbals and cymbal stands. I now set up my drums with in a quarter if the time I used to. I recommend leaving the bottom heads tuned loose on the Toms. I like a Tom that rings a little. The kick needed minor muffiling but I didn't need any pillow or anything in the bass drum. I just needed a little muffiling on the batter side of the bass drum. The kit sounded fantastic with mics and I was more than impressed with how it sounded live. These drums are great, easy to set up and tear down, very light, and perfect for any musician, starting musician or experienced musician.

This kit is so good. I would recommend it to drummers of any skill level. It is small and compact, but has a big kit sound. I was very pleasantly surprised by this kit. the build quality is Lugwig level for sure, it doesnt have a lot of fancy bells and whistles like memory locks or anything, but for the price this kit is really unbeatable. I would 100% recommend this to anyone looking for a small kit.
