Comments about Ludwig Black Magic Stainless Steel Snare Drum:
This drum is pretty straightforward. First off, it's got a real solid strainer with a smooth action. As for the sound and feel, it behaves like a good steel snare should. It's got a really powerful cutting sound that should be able to rip it's way through any mix, though it's not overbearingly harsh in any way. Rimshots sound GREAT, lots of crack. The drum has very pleasing overtones, which I always look for in a drum. It gives the drum a lot of presence, though it doesn't sound honkey or anything. It's definitely not a dead or dry sounding drum; it's got a lot of life to it. Just as frame of reference, I compared this side by side with a Mapex Sledgehammer for over an hour. We all know Mapex makes serious drums, and at $100 less this drum stood up to the Sledgehammer in every way. Of course the Sledge is hammered brass, so the tone was different, but the overall build quality and sound quality was on par. So all in all the Black Magic is a wonderful drum, easily worth the price, and can stand up to it's much pricier competition. The main reason to get this drum is that it performs like a steel drum should and is built to last a lifetime. What more do you need?
