A snare that's starred on countless records for 70 years!

Listen to any hit song from the '60s through today and chances are you're hearing a Ludwig snare drum. And the Supraphonic Black Beauty is among the most famous and legendary Ludwig snare drums of all. The Ludwig Black Beauty brass shell is constructed of a single sheet of metal that is machine drawn and spun into a seamless beaded drum, then black nickel plated with an exquisite finish. The shell provides a warm, round metallic tone.

This Black Beauty responds with excellent sensitivity at all volumes. It features Ludwig's Imperial lugs, triple-flanged hoops, and a hand-hammered shell. The 70 year tradition of the Ludwig Black Beauty carries on as one of the most ultimate snare drums in the industry.

This snare was not cheap by any means, but if you are looking for that perfect snare for jazz or rock... strongly consider this drum. It's no suprise that this snare is very popular for recording. It sounds like a recording. Nice snappy attack, just the right decay... I love it. It has a wonderful response too. LUDWIG knows what they're doing! GREAT BUY!!

  • Amazing

As reviewed by Todd on 7/9/2010

I really hemmed and hawed about buying this snare. I have a mapex maple snare and a black panther cherry snare. I really like the sound of a metal snare so I started shopping. Everyone says wonderful things about these snares. I was pretty confident it was a good snare, but I wasn't sure if it was worth the extra money. I finally broke down and bought it. I opened the box and set it up. Man did this thing sound phenominal right out of the box. I was astounded. I never knew a snare could sound this good. I grabbed my recorder and recorded some playing on this snare and my black panther. I then went back and listened. This snare is in a completely different league. That's saying something as the black panther snares are pretty darn nice. I checked the tuning and it was slightly out of tune. It sounded so good that I was nervous about messing with the tuning. But I spent a minute tuning the drum to itself and to my amazement it sounded even better. I bought some remo heads but I'm so in love with the sound I'm going to keep the stock heads on for a while. The bottom line is, that this snare is no joke and no hype. It's worth every penny. I have never heard a snare that sounds this good.

  • The Real Thing

Often imitated, never duplicated. The real Ludwig sound everybody's been trying to bootleg for years. Only one way to get it. Play the real thing.
