  • livewire custom cable kit

As reviewed by Leonard Heller on 10/25/2009

I build my own cords, effect pedals, and soon tube amps....so when I saw the "Cable Kit" at Guitar Center, I thought it would be a great way to create custom cables. Wrong. There is nothing "easy" about this kit. No directions anywhere, box or website, and the "easy" docking connectors take a lot of trial and effort to get to work. To make matters worse, the kit came with almost a foot of cable missing----at least one more patch cord worth-----and... I have NEVER seen this....the 1/4 straight connectors won't fit into a guitar jack!!!!

  • Do not buy

As reviewed by T.J. Lupinacci on 12/31/2009

The previous review was correct. It came with no instructions (the webpage doesnt have any either)nor did it come with the wrench! The screws are so soft they stripped when tightening and are now useless. The two straight plugs would not even unscrew apart. Its like they are permanently soldered! I even tried with channel locks to unscrew them and of course ruined them in the process. So for the price I paid I received 3, 2 ft cords. I wish i never made this expensive purchase. A waste of my time and money!

  • Worst Cable Kit

As reviewed by Lonnie West on 1/12/2012

I'll start with the disclaimer that I've been using LiveWire cables for years and love their reliability and price. I've been amazed at how over-priced cables have become; it's almost like they are a boutique item these days. They are just CABLES. LiveWire has built a successful line of cables using quality connectors and wire, and I've had zero problems with any of their other products. This, however, it horrible. Truly, an embarrassment and black eye to their brand. As others have stated, there are no instructions in the box. But, there probably doesn't need to be any as it's pretty clear what you are supposed to do. Basically, you cut the cable to length with the razor, push the end onto the gold-plated point (that is supposed to make a good connection with the cord), screw on the casing and tighten the ground screw. Out of the box, two of the connectors were fused together so I was not able to remove the shell. One other connector had a stripped ground screw. After spending 45 minutes making 4 cables, only one worked. 2 of them were ruined because the ground screw also pierced the core and shorted the cable. Of of them was an intermittent connection that came and went when the connector was moved. I assume this was due to the gold pin solderless connection. I had my doubts when I bought this kit, as I've learned from 20 years of being on stage that solid soldered connections are the best. Relying on a gold pin pushed into the core, and then TWO screw connections (the cable-piercing screw, and the shell) to ensure my signal makes it from point A to point B seems to be a very, very poor design. I can confirm it's a HORRIBLE design, and it's no wonder these kits are now on clearance at my local store. Save your money, and either buy connectors and solder your own cables, or make do with whatever pre-assembled patch cords you can find. .
