I bought the Toneport UX1 from Guitar Center after seeing an online ad for RiffWorks, a simple recording & composing program that can be bought bundled with GuitarPort. I bought the Toneport instead because it has a mic in; otherwise, the software that comes with it is the same (no RiffWorks - I bought that seperately). Very easy to set up, worked flawlessly on my PC (CAUTION- *requires* XP service pack II). I plugged in my newly purchased Squier Bullet, and began playing around. The sound that is produced is EXTRAORDINARY! The Gearbox software that comes with it has a graphical interface that shows a signal path with EVERY POSSIBLE effect box (distortion, modulation, delay, etc) plus about 30 different amp/cabinet combinations. And everything is graphically represented by pictures of the actual gear - you simply 'adjust' the knobs just as you would if it were in front of you. It's as if you were in the music store and could grab any amp, stomp box, etc. and play with them to your hearts content. Best of all, they sound incredibly authentic! I tried a few combinations of gear I already owned, and could not hear a difference. If you dont want to spend all your time fooling around with settings, there are about 50 'pre-sets' that are terrific, some of them mimicing the setup (AND SOUND!) of popular songs or signature sounds. All in all, a terrific product - if you like to experiment with different effects, amps, etc., and particularly if you are recording on your PC. Highly recommended!!

I have had 2 of UX1 interfaces. I have been somewhat unimpressed with my purchase and in fact am about to trade mine in for something better. I had problems with the electrical current picking up in the recording. There was a consistent clicking that kept showing up and I'm certain that it was a current coming through the cords. I just think for the type of stuff I was recording was too much for this interface. If you're going to spend the $130 I would just buy a board with a USB built in. It will be worth your money.

great for plug n play recording

Comments about Line 6 TonePort UX1 USB Recording/Modeling Interface:

This unit was a little more tricky to set up than I would have liked. There were some driver issues and some less than helpful documentation. But with a little patience and getting the latest software updates from Line6.com, it's a very usable system. I sold my Vox Tonelab after I got this. I like having everything up on my computer monitor at the same time: Amp, FX, Tuner, DAW. I think it makes for a better workflow that keeps me focused on recording instead of tinkering. The Vox Tonelab had superior sounds, but not signficantly so. The VOX had the kind of sounds that I was always tinkering with instead of recording with. The Toneport comes with some very usable presets for guitar, bass, and vocals that sit well in a mix together without a lot of extra work. The quality of both the amp models and the USB interface means that snippets that I record in a hurry just to get an idea going can be gradually morphed into full-fledged songs. I'm not a big fan of Ableton Live, so the included copy didn't interest me much. If you don't already have a favorite DAW package, then you could budget some time for Ableton's learning curve. Personally I would go with Sony's ACID as the easiest DAW to learn. Also, save some bucks and get the Toneport UX1 instead of the UX2 and either get a cheap Behringer mixer or mic preamp to phantom power your condenser mic. It will still be cheaper than the UX2 and you'll have some additional flexibility for recording.

Up Graded

Comments about Line 6 TonePort UX1 USB Recording/Modeling Interface:

So, here is the deal, I purchased a Guitar Port by Line 6 about a year ago, and took it back, wasn't happy. They came out with new software and I decided to try it again...very happy. Wanted to record vocals, Guitar Port is not really designed for that. So, I upgraded to the Line 6 TonePort UX1. Same great guitar effects, ease of set up and use. They also have great mic pre-amps based on some classics. The mic I have does not need phatom power, since the UX1 doesn't have phantom power, score there. Easy set up for use with in Adobe Audition and good clean audio. I can't say enough about what Line6 has done over the last year or so with their computer based products. I think the quality is great the pricing, more than reasonable and I've had very good luck with their tech support. If this unit was stolen, I'd either buy it again or if budget permitted I'd buy the UX2.

Comments about Line 6 TonePort UX1 USB Recording/Modeling Interface:

It gets the job done. It comes with a demo recording software that isn't half bad. I definately suggest saving the extra 70 or so dollars to get the upgraded version of this interface. The bass settings are perfect and the guitar isn't really that good if you want original sounds.

just what i needed.

By lovethatrock

Comments about Line 6 TonePort UX1 USB Recording/Modeling Interface:

i bought this as my first recording equipment and i also wanted some effects for the guitar so buying this was like hitting 2 birds with one stone for me. I still havent found the perfect settings on my computer for near-zero latency but i'm getting there. to test the quality, i recorded eric clapton's "layla" using ableton live with a guitar, bass, and my keyboards (for drums and synth) and it came out great. i still haven't recorded with the mic yet so i'm not sure what to expect of the vocal. i did realize that some of the distortion effects sounded a bit fuzzy (and not in the good way) but, overall, manageable. i didn't have any monitors to hook this up to so i'm relying on my marshall amp which i realized is not a good alternative since the amp adds more distortion than what i'm intending to record. haha. in conclusion. the only problem i have is that getting the right settings on the computer is crucial in latency problems and because i was unable to achieve low latency, i have to go back and forth while recording with the output to the amp and then listening to the actual sound on my computer speakers. because if i recorded with the computer speakers, there would be an obvious delay between strumming and hearing which throws you off while recording.

Nice interface for the price

By DerHorizon

Comments about Line 6 TonePort UX1 USB Recording/Modeling Interface:

Not a bad little recording interface, especially for the price. The amp/cab models are a little bit hit or miss. I don't really think they sound good by themselves, but once you get them in a mix there are a couple of tones that I really like. I kind of wish the Line6 software were a little more flexible, since there are certain effects that you can't use together, but overall, I'm satisfied with it. If I start doing more serious recording, I'm sure I'll get something better, but for just laying down ideas and quick, little tracks, this works well for me.

Comments about Line 6 TonePort UX1 USB Recording/Modeling Interface:

this is a very good product, especially for this price. I did have some dificulty setting it up to the recording program i use, but thats about it. The effects are insane, and its great for vocals, bass, guitars, even drums (if you have the right mics) overall, its a very good product.

Comments about Line 6 TonePort UX1 USB Recording/Modeling Interface:

I have been out of the music scene for 10yrs. As I am getting back into it, I see things have changed quite a bit. (welcome to digital) The only equipment I have left is my electric guitar. What a beauty this UX1 has turned out to be. I am able to jam with incredible tones like I have a house full of equipment! It blows my mind the sound I can get just by switching a pre-set to countless rig set ups. All with no equipment... just this little box and some software on my computer... Incredible. This thing will be great too for when I eventually get a head and cabinet again. I will just leave that stuff at a buddies house and jam at home on my UX1.

Comments about Line 6 TonePort UX1 USB Recording/Modeling Interface:

Bought this to throw down some demos on my computer and I was so pleased that I cut my whole album with it. I use it with the "Audacity" recording program. The guitar and vocal effects are great, and if you need to modify them it is really simple, and you can save the modifications. Set up was simple and the price is unbeatable. I will use this for every album I make.

Exactly what I was looking for

Comments about Line 6 TonePort UX1 USB Recording/Modeling Interface:

All I wanted was something that would allow me to record some stuff to my computer, and this product made it happen. The features are pretty boss, GearBox is fun to play with, and the recording software that came with it is really easy to use. I have never recorded anything in my life, and I threw down a tune with guitar, vocals, and harmonica today in about 15 minutes. Yes, it's really that easy.

More than I expected

By Matt

from NC

Comments about Line 6 TonePort UX1 USB Recording/Modeling Interface:

I got this just looking for a component to get my instruments into my pc and this does precisely that. But it comes with Gearbox software which allows you to get all these amazing tones from your guitar. I was very impressed. I constantly enjoy tinkering with it. Someone said it wasn't durable because they dropped it and it broke. I have yet to test that one because personally, I like to try and keep my things nice. Anybody can work the toneport and it's great for recording your inspired music and your full-length songs.

Great for the price

Comments about Line 6 TonePort UX1 USB Recording/Modeling Interface:

I've had this for a year now. It's hard to think of a con considering that you virtually have any tone possible in gearbox. I use the variety of effects for my praise team and the ability to switch effects without standalone pedals, while sounding professional, is so handy. There is one con in that if you're hooked up on a slow computer, it will occasionally give you the annoying white noise sound. But overall, i hook up my guitar and mic (for voice effects, as well) while performing live and i haven't heard any complaints yet (only praise :])! when i'm home, i connect the line out to my home theatre system with a 1/4" to rca adapter but i use my amp as well. Another minor thing is that i don't know if i can control the wah with a cheap usb pedal or if i need a dedicated wah :/ i need it for this sunday too. anyways, its a great buy if you're on a budget and if you want to play with different types of effects.

Newbie Playing

Comments about Line 6 TonePort UX1 USB Recording/Modeling Interface:

I'm playing a Gibson SG special, Marshall AS50D amp, and the TonePort UX1 connected to a macbook. This thing is really cool. I am a beginner (been learning for about 6 months now), and this is exactly what I was looking for. I am using the UX1 on a Macbook, and it was very easy to configure. The preloaded array of effects and equipment are incredible, any sound you want to feed your monitor is there. I prefer to use 'Garage band' over the free recording software, but the 'Gear Box' is really cool and very easy to use. I am studying Angus Young to start, and I was able to pull down his set-up from GuitarPort and it sounded great.
