I've owned almost every generation of Line 6 (1.0, 2.0 and X3)and this is the first that could pass as a real stompbox. Previous generations sounded terrible artificial to me. The M5 effects are WAY better than the X3 that came before it. Overdrives aren't so good but it does well for everything else. Something like a Fulltone OCD and one of these is all you need for a basic setup. Just the tuner and modulation or delays make this worth it. Pros: - Easy to use and sounds better than any previous Line 6. - Runs on DC. The M9 and M13 run on dedicated AC adapters. I wanted a remote rig (no wall plug needed) so the M9 and M13 were out. You can run the M5 off a Pedal Juice battery. I run it off a regular pedal power chain and it works fine (although I'm sure Line 6 recommends using theirs). - True bypass. So only engage when you want it. - Tuner. Everyone needs one in their pedal chain. Cons: - Switching presets is awkward. You have to step on both buttons then scroll then double-step again. Makes fast preset changes difficult. - No USB. Updates and saving is through midi cables and I don't have a midi interface on my computer. No excuse for no USB these days. - Dialing in an exact setting is very hard on the tiny knobs. I wanted a 400 ms delay and it was near impossible to be exact. Maybe editing through midi might solve this problem... if I had a midi interface. Overall, given the flexibility, tuner and great sounding delays/modulation effects for the price of a single decent pedal, this is a no-brainer. Definitely worth adding to your pedalboard.

My M5 worked great for a few months, then started going dead ON THE GIG. No sound coming through whatsoever. VERY FRUSTRATING while the rest of the band waits for the guitarist (me) to figure out what's wrong so they can play the next song. Dead in the water! This happened enough times that I was forced to stop using the pedal in live performance. A quick search online reveals this to be a COMMON PROBLEM, and one that Line 6 is aware of but does not address. Check out their user forum to see for yourself. Their customer support is virtually non-existant as far as I can determine. Despite the menu of good usable sounds, I would have to recommend AGAINST buying this pedal.

Comments about Line 6 M5 Stompbox Modeler Guitar Multi Effects Pedal:

I bought this pedal to add reverb to my pedal board. I was planning on just buying a reverb pedal or Strymon sky since I have the Mobius and Timeline but I thought I'd give it try. The reverbs on the unit are good enough to add some kind wetness but what really floored me is how well the overdrive and fuzz sounded with the DS-1 and SD-1 Boss pedals. I love the midi capability, the size, and the way it blends with my current effects and dirt pedals. After watching a video of Bob Bradshaw and his opinion I had to give this pedal a chance and I am so happy I did. I may consider a JHV3 mod to pedal but for now I am very happy with the stock sound.

Comments about Line 6 M5 Stompbox Modeler Guitar Multi Effects Pedal:

It's a no-brainer, for the price of a typical one trick pedal you get a really versatile pedal that each trick just as well as the one trick pedal. This will get plenty of use... BTW I haven't been a Line-6 fan because of the PODs but I'm finding it's mostly that I don't find their amp/distortion models very usable but the modulation, delay and reverbs are growing on me.

Comments about Line 6 M5 Stompbox Modeler Guitar Multi Effects Pedal:

I have used the M5 on everything from keyboards, to basses, to acoustic guitar, and of course electric. I absolutely love the versatility of this pedal. I simply feel like there is no downside to adding this pedal to your repertoire. The only thing that I absolutely hate about this pedal is the overdrives and distortions, most of them do not add anything special or desirable to your tone; however, the reverbs, modulation effects, and everything else are great, especially the reverbs. I have had NO ISSUES with this pedal as far as power supply or grounding goes. I believe people may face this issue because this pedal takes 9V at 500ma, and not the more common 9V@ 300ma. I just use the stock power supply and that seems to help, but I'm no electrician. Overall, I love this pedal. The only reason it gets 4 stars is because of the overdrives.

Comments about Line 6 M5 Stompbox Modeler Guitar Multi Effects Pedal:

This is a good sounding stompbox, which I perform with. BUT you must fix the grounding issue which causes the power to cut out. Since grounding is through the metal case, you must scrape all paint away from the five external screw holes, including the one on the side and replace with unpainted screws. AND most important: take off the case and lightly sand or file the bottoms of the two threaded metal tubes that two of the external screws thread into to support the circuit board, as well as where the tubes touch the inside of the case. These actions will correct the poor design by Line 6 which created the intermittent grounding problem. Line 6 should have acknowledged the design or production flaw in an otherwise good product.

This is the perfect pedal to use for those pedals you don't have and only use occasionally. Plus, the effects that are on here are great! Love this pedal.

Worth the money, might as well have come without the distortions.

    By David Hollenbeck

Comments about Line 6 M5 Stompbox Modeler Guitar Multi Effects Pedal:

I bought this pedal a few years ago and ended up returning it because I decided to buy the DL4 instead, for whatever reason. Recently I purchased it again when I was upgrading some other equipment thinking it might be useful and I wasn't disappointed at all, had it for about 3 months. I always have it in my effects loop now (polytune, full drive 2, tube screamer clone, m5, tc electronic hall of fame reverb, boss dd-3 delay, and xotic sp compressor) and it sees a lot of use. It's got enough storage for you to pick out some of the effects that you like from the bank and then modify them based on what you need for the song. All in all good buy, the distortion/OD is useless but it's line 6 so no big surprise there.

Comments about Line 6 M5 Stompbox Modeler Guitar Multi Effects Pedal:

I was impressed right out of the box. Pluged it in and started jamming. Seems well built and the stompbuttons seem solid? Although for programing, there will be a learning curve for fine tuning or looking for your specific sound, I'm sure it wont be that difficult to grasp. And the price was in the budget I had given myself.

    Nothing like the PODs

    By Arthur Mee

    from Gibbstown, NJ

Comments about Line 6 M5 Stompbox Modeler Guitar Multi Effects Pedal:

I have lived through several generations of PODs - all the way through the POD HD 500. Ultimately, I couldn't use any of them in a live setting with a good tube amp without coloring the tone one way or another. I got frustrated and bought a pair of M5 units (one for the front end of the amp, one for the FX Loop.) Sorry - the M9s and M13s wouldn't fit on my pedalboard. Although the POD HD units carry the same M-class effects, the M5 is wayyyyyy more transparent than the PODs. The True Bypass certainly helps preserve tone when disengaged (you need to turn that switch on when you receive the unit - it's off by default). Tone-wise - you really can't find better mods, delays, and reverbs. Most of the filters are weird and fun, but not usable in most common band settings. The overdrives are OK but certainly not special. The distortions are harsh, but that's OK with my setup (I also have a Bogner Ecstacy Red going into the front of the amp). I pair up my M5 with a Mission Expression pedal to control the wahs and volumes - an awesome combination. For me, I just don't need to ordinarily engage a delay, a chorus, a reverb, and a wah at the same time. The M5 is a wonderful addition to a cramped pedal board.

    Great pedal!!!!!!!!!....BUT

    By David Taylor

    from Lakeland FL

Comments about Line 6 M5 Stompbox Modeler Guitar Multi Effects Pedal:

Well I've had the M5 for 5 months now and it has been working great. The modulations are amazing. I feel in love with the tri-chorus and the univibe so much that either one was almost always on. The delays and reverbs are epic but I would not suggest this for the drives or the compressor. The noise gate that turns on whenever the pedal does a great job and spoiled me with a lack of sizzle when using high gain. This is a great pedal and it was a staple for me when it worked. Now you see I said WHEN it worked. About a month ago it started producing a weird frequency whenever I used some of the patches but others where still clean and random note free. A few weeks ago every single patch has the tone cutting through past whatever I'm playing. Needless to say I cant use it live anymore and definitely not when recording. I love this pedal but at the moment it is utterly useless at the moment. If I can get it fixed it will be back on my board.
