I've owned almost every generation of Line 6 (1.0, 2.0 and X3)and this is the first that could pass as a real stompbox. Previous generations sounded terrible artificial to me. The M5 effects are WAY better than the X3 that came before it. Overdrives aren't so good but it does well for everything else. Something like a Fulltone OCD and one of these is all you need for a basic setup. Just the tuner and modulation or delays make this worth it. Pros: - Easy to use and sounds better than any previous Line 6. - Runs on DC. The M9 and M13 run on dedicated AC adapters. I wanted a remote rig (no wall plug needed) so the M9 and M13 were out. You can run the M5 off a Pedal Juice battery. I run it off a regular pedal power chain and it works fine (although I'm sure Line 6 recommends using theirs). - True bypass. So only engage when you want it. - Tuner. Everyone needs one in their pedal chain. Cons: - Switching presets is awkward. You have to step on both buttons then scroll then double-step again. Makes fast preset changes difficult. - No USB. Updates and saving is through midi cables and I don't have a midi interface on my computer. No excuse for no USB these days. - Dialing in an exact setting is very hard on the tiny knobs. I wanted a 400 ms delay and it was near impossible to be exact. Maybe editing through midi might solve this problem... if I had a midi interface. Overall, given the flexibility, tuner and great sounding delays/modulation effects for the price of a single decent pedal, this is a no-brainer. Definitely worth adding to your pedalboard.

Well I've had the M5 for 5 months now and it has been working great. The modulations are amazing. I feel in love with the tri-chorus and the univibe so much that either one was almost always on. The delays and reverbs are epic but I would not suggest this for the drives or the compressor. The noise gate that turns on whenever the pedal does a great job and spoiled me with a lack of sizzle when using high gain. This is a great pedal and it was a staple for me when it worked. Now you see I said WHEN it worked. About a month ago it started producing a weird frequency whenever I used some of the patches but others where still clean and random note free. A few weeks ago every single patch has the tone cutting through past whatever I'm playing. Needless to say I cant use it live anymore and definitely not when recording. I love this pedal but at the moment it is utterly useless at the moment. If I can get it fixed it will be back on my board.

Comments about Line 6 M5 Stompbox Modeler Guitar Multi Effects Pedal:

I bought this pedal to add reverb to my pedal board. I was planning on just buying a reverb pedal or Strymon sky since I have the Mobius and Timeline but I thought I'd give it try. The reverbs on the unit are good enough to add some kind wetness but what really floored me is how well the overdrive and fuzz sounded with the DS-1 and SD-1 Boss pedals. I love the midi capability, the size, and the way it blends with my current effects and dirt pedals. After watching a video of Bob Bradshaw and his opinion I had to give this pedal a chance and I am so happy I did. I may consider a JHV3 mod to pedal but for now I am very happy with the stock sound.

This is the perfect pedal to use for those pedals you don't have and only use occasionally. Plus, the effects that are on here are great! Love this pedal.

Worth the money, might as well have come without the distortions.

Comments about Line 6 M5 Stompbox Modeler Guitar Multi Effects Pedal:

I bought this pedal a few years ago and ended up returning it because I decided to buy the DL4 instead, for whatever reason. Recently I purchased it again when I was upgrading some other equipment thinking it might be useful and I wasn't disappointed at all, had it for about 3 months. I always have it in my effects loop now (polytune, full drive 2, tube screamer clone, m5, tc electronic hall of fame reverb, boss dd-3 delay, and xotic sp compressor) and it sees a lot of use. It's got enough storage for you to pick out some of the effects that you like from the bank and then modify them based on what you need for the song. All in all good buy, the distortion/OD is useless but it's line 6 so no big surprise there.

    Nothing like the PODs

    By Arthur Mee

    from Gibbstown, NJ

Comments about Line 6 M5 Stompbox Modeler Guitar Multi Effects Pedal:

I have lived through several generations of PODs - all the way through the POD HD 500. Ultimately, I couldn't use any of them in a live setting with a good tube amp without coloring the tone one way or another. I got frustrated and bought a pair of M5 units (one for the front end of the amp, one for the FX Loop.) Sorry - the M9s and M13s wouldn't fit on my pedalboard. Although the POD HD units carry the same M-class effects, the M5 is wayyyyyy more transparent than the PODs. The True Bypass certainly helps preserve tone when disengaged (you need to turn that switch on when you receive the unit - it's off by default). Tone-wise - you really can't find better mods, delays, and reverbs. Most of the filters are weird and fun, but not usable in most common band settings. The overdrives are OK but certainly not special. The distortions are harsh, but that's OK with my setup (I also have a Bogner Ecstacy Red going into the front of the amp). I pair up my M5 with a Mission Expression pedal to control the wahs and volumes - an awesome combination. For me, I just don't need to ordinarily engage a delay, a chorus, a reverb, and a wah at the same time. The M5 is a wonderful addition to a cramped pedal board.

Huge reverbs, deep delays, mediocre build quality.

Comments about Line 6 M5 Stompbox Modeler Guitar Multi Effects Pedal:

I've bought the Echo Park numerous times over the past several years but the lifespan of those units is about 18 months before they become a doorstop. When it came time to replace the latest paperweight, I saw the price point of the M5 and took the plunge. It's a solid feeling pedal with a compact footprint. The foot pedals engage with a solid click. Knobs feel too small and it's easy to overshoot your desired setting. The backlit LCD screen lacks enough contrast to read from a standing position. No effect switching is available from the foot pedals-- you need to reach down and turn a knob to access different effects, which is sort of a waste. That said, the unit produces powerful effects. I'm in love with the reverbs, especially Particle Verb. I specifically wanted a delay that offered dotted eighth notes and a tap tempo and this pedal delivers. It's harder to find the right mix with the M5 than the Echo Park. I don't use the modulation effects but there are some weird ones. Distortions go from subtle overdrives to over-the-top fuzz. Again, too bad you can only use one effect at a time. These are versatile enough that I plan on running two in parallel, rather than upgrading to the larger M7.

best add-on to an already solid pedal board

    By Cody Wallace

Comments about Line 6 M5 Stompbox Modeler Guitar Multi Effects Pedal:

i've been playing out an ever-growing board for years now. i am an absolute pedal junkie. i think this gem may have saved me from my next 4-5 pedal purchases. it a must buy for anyone that heavily uses effects pedals. 24 presets, tons of quality sounding effects, very simple to use, and doesn't take up much board space at all. i gave it a four star, instead of 5, rating though because i would like for the distortions on it to sound a bit better, and because i feel some of the effects on it could have offered different options in regards to which parameters of the effect you can alter and tinker with. still, a fantastic pedal!

    just buy it

    By Samuel Stephens

Comments about Line 6 M5 Stompbox Modeler Guitar Multi Effects Pedal:

As stated before, the M5 is great IF used in an effects chain, by itself NO, use a stompbox pedal. Add the M5 with other pedals of your choosing and it will complete your pedalboard. Buying stompbox pedals can get expensive, so buy your basic pedals and add the M5 and you can complete your pedalboard without blowing up your bank account. If you don't like all of the single pedals, buy an M9 or M13. I've had POD units that were difficult to understand. But these pedals are not that difficult, even for a guy who is 60 plus years old, so buy one and try it out. They're fun.

    Brilliant!

    By David Hollenbeck

    from Concord, CA

Comments about Line 6 M5 Stompbox Modeler Guitar Multi Effects Pedal:

I've been waiting for a pedal like this for a long time. I'd always want something like a tremolo, flanger, phaser, reverb, etc. but I couldn't justify buying a pedal just for one of those. Now I have them all in one box, ready for whenever I need them! Note that this is not meant to be "the only pedal you'll ever need". I have it hooked up with a chain of effects, and except to use it consistently, however, it would be inconvenient at best to attempt to use a single M5 as your rig. I suggest shelling out the cash to get separate distortion, overdrive, tuner, and delay, and using this guy for everything in between.
