Overview

With the Omega Desktop Recording Studio, Lexicon has taken a whole-system approach to desktop recording. Omega Studio is an integrated computer recording system that includes the Omega 8x4x2 USB I/O mixer, Cubase LE, and Pantheon world-class Lexicon reverb plug-in. Omega Studio contains all of the components necessary to let you record and mix 24-bit audio professionally on your computer.

Omega Studio Hardware

Differentiating itself from standard computer I/O boxes that are typically based on a patchbay paradigm, the Omega 8x4x2 USB I/O mixer is based on a mixer paradigm and includes input, output, and mixing functions that support a variety of tracking/monitoring applications while requiring no additional mixing hardware.

The Omega I/O mixer provides eight inputs that are assignable in pairs to any of four simultaneous record channels featuring ultra-transparent, high-resolution analog-to-digital converters to capture your performance with pristine 24-bit quality. Two of the inputs feature extremely low-noise dbx mic-preamps with 48V phantom power and TRS insert points. Four TRS active balanced line inputs accept up to +22dBu
signals to allow interfacing to either unbalanced or professional high-output level-balanced equipment. Included is an S/PDIF input combined with an additional DAC for zero-latency, direct monitoring of the S/PDIF source to allow simultaneous tracking of analog and digital sources.

A high-impedance instrument input is conveniently accessible on the front panel. The Omega I/O mixer provides a peak indicator for each analog input as well as an assignable bar graph meter for signal level monitoring. By monitoring the signal at the A/D converters, you avoid the problems with software-only level monitoring that can miss clipping and ruin your track. The Lexicon Omega I/O mixer also includes a fully opto-isolated MIDI input to ensure that there is no annoying ground loop hum or MIDI talk-through noise common with many I/O boxes and sound cards.

MIDI output has rock-solid synchronization to USB frame rate to support applications requiring critical sync.

Cubase LE

Your Lexicon Omega system includes Steinberg's Cubase LE. From the first idea to complete compositions, Cubase is the virtual recording studio for all musicians and producers looking for a creative way to realize their projects. It integrates seamlessly with the Omega I/O Mixer to achieve an easy-to-use, 48-track complete recording solution that includes all of the modules that you need to track, edit, and mix your masterpiece.

Cubase LE supports up to 48 audio and 64 MIDI tracks with professional audio editing and processing features including: full automation of volume, pan, mute, and effects; MIDI score editor with advanced quantization and logical presets; up to eight VST instruments; two insert and four effect sends per channel; and VST system link and ReWire 2 compatibility.

Lexicon Pantheon Reverb Plug-In

Designed entirely by Lexicon engineers, the Pantheon reverb plug-in offers 35 factory presets featuring six reverb types (hall, chamber,
plate, room, ambience, and custom) controlled by an intuitive user interface with 16 editable parameters. The Lexicon name is synonymous
with the world's best reverb. Pantheon continues this legacy by bringing that Lexicon sound to your projects.

Make no mistake about it - when this interface is set up correctly and the drivers are checked for stability - you will get first class recording sessions out of the Lexicon Omega. Cubase LE (bundled with the product) did not come without it's problems. In the initial setup I had to immediately reinstall because of my misreading the serial number. Four installs later - I am experiencing difficulties on each initial load of the software. After some tweaking and fine tuning (WITHOUT CONSULTING THE MANUAL!) the installation finally stabilized. Here is the good news, though. This machine is not entirely recommended for this box or the software at all. It is a Satellite (Toshiba) W30 and running only Intel Celeron M. That should tell you right away that it is technically underpowered for the job out of the gate! It STILL RUNS and RUNS WELL when you are careful on your task list and do not run unnecessary applications when you are recording multitrack work. The sound quality is pristine and you will be absolutely amazed at the difference in your recording clarity. Additionally - I have more than one Digital Audio interface connected to the USB 2.0 hub on this laptop. Both function when called upon and driver switches are flawless. My final recommendation to you is this: If your situation is similar to what I have described - you will have to be patient on the learning curve to use this. If you have a recommended hardware situation - you are in a better position than I - buy it now without hesitation. I am patient - and if you are not - better check elsewhere. If, on the other hand, you will take the time to tweak this for your system, you will not be sorry if you buy it.

This unit worked great for about 3 weeks and then it suddenly would drop the USB connection and it would show up as 'USB Device' I've reinstalled drivers from the disc many times and even downloaded drivers from the Lexicon website, but after months of messing with it I've given up on it. I'm by no means new to computers and have tried everything I can think of to get this thing working again, I've read on the Lexicon forum about guys with similar problems even seen Omegas for sale on eBay marked "Works Intermittently" so I know it's not just a problem with my unit. Lexicon support says to turn off the power saving mode on your USB hub but that does not work, in the manual it says to reset it by holding two buttons on the front, but that does not fix this problem, it is a bug in the hardware. I would avoid this product.

More Features for the Money!

By JT Player

Comments about Lexicon Omega Desktop Recording Studio:

I have owned an MBox and used Pro Tools LE software for the last two years. I have been shopping/researching for a neighbor's son who wants to get started with home recording and likes my set up. After seeing the features and flexibility of this Lexicon Omega system for under 3 bills, I recommended that he buy this right away! With ability to record 4 tracks simultaneously, it's a great basement band studio starter with plenty of upside potential. Easy Cubase software. Unbelievable value!

Perfect Budget setup

By Droopy Gangster

from Idaho

Comments about Lexicon Omega Desktop Recording Studio:

I just purchased the Omega and was very impressed with the cd quality and features I was able to use to edit songs. The cubase le that came with the product was the perfect host to use, although it didn't come with a manual, I was able to find one on the net. If your looking for a quick home set up and don't want to spend a fortune, look at getting one of these.

Mixed Feelings

By AboutSound

Comments about Lexicon Omega Desktop Recording Studio:

I had used mine for over a year with no problems until I re-arranged my studio, then the drivers started dropping in and out.I found the forum group on the web and sure enough the ribbon cable inside the unit was shorting out on a heat sink.I fixed it by re-directing the ribbon cable off the heat sink and have had no problems since.Besides this one flaw this unit sounds great, has some great features and is easy to use.

Best choice period!!!!

By Shannon

Comments about Lexicon Omega Desktop Recording Studio:

I have been to studios and home recording setups and I was tired of paying hourly rates to record. I looked into desktop equiptment and didnt want to spend alot of money. The Lexicon Omega was affordable and hands down the ultimate desktop setup. I run mine on Vista with no problems and the quality is amazing. I have total control of everything and can record unlimited tracks to one song. You will not be sorry you purchased this setup. The 2 mic setup is perfect. I use a condensor mic in the background in conjunction with the main mic and it produces top notch reproduction.

Great Big Paper Weight

By Sevrin

from Sydney, NSW

Comments about Lexicon Omega Desktop Recording Studio:

I bought this unit about a year ago and have had nothing but trouble with it. The unit first started playing up about a month after i bought it. It would drop out and not register on my computer. As it was still under warranty I took it to the authorized repairer and it was repaired. I was advised that the reason it was dropping out was due to a design floor that allows a ribbon cable inside to touch part of the circuit board that heats up. This causes the ribbon to melt/break. I posted many times on the Lexicon forum to find that a month after posting my warnings to other potential victims had been deleted by the admin. From what I read before posts started 'vanishing', my Omega wasn't the only one experiencing this same problem! I gave this unit one star because zero stars wasn't an option! So in short, AVOID THIS UNIT LIKE THE PLAGUE!

Don't treat it like a pro unit and no problems...

By Paul

from San Diego, CA

Comments about Lexicon Omega Desktop Recording Studio:

As soon as I wanted to do two inputs with hot signal, this thing took my beautiful (and very old) Epiphone to the sounds of a chinese-made cardboard guitar... It works fine with one channel and mono monitoring, otherwise it is very taxing... Me? I use a dual 800MHz G4 Mac with 1.5G of ram, nothing else running at the time of recording... Two Audio Technica 4050 mics with their own phantom power supplies. (The Lexicon does not have a full and transparent 48v off of the USB box...)
