Overview

The recording professionals at Lexicon Pro know a thing or two about great audio - that famed Lexicon reverb "sound" has been on just about every hit recording since we invented digital reverb more than 30 years ago. So when we set out to bring that sound home - we got truly inspired.

THE COMPLETE SYSTEM

Nothing is more frustrating than buying a "recording system" only to find out that you need a gaggle of extras just to make it all work. Omega Studio is a completely integrated computer recording system that includes the Omega 8x4x2 USB I/O Mixer, Steinberg's Cubase LE 5 audio and MIDI recording software, and Lexicon's world-class Pantheon VST Reverb plug-in. The Omega Desktop Recording Studio quite literally contains all the necessary components to transform your computer into a professional 24-bit recording studio - all in one box.

A REAL MIXER

Unlike standard computer I/O boxes based on a patch bay concept, the Lexicon Omega Studio is designed and built around the same paradigm as large-format recording consoles. An 8-input, 4-Bus, 2-output USB I/O mixer with inserts, instrument input, MIDI I/O and complete metering and monitoring functions gives you the freedom to record up to 4 tracks at once and mix without the need for additional mixing hardware.

Two dbx Silver Series mic preamps with 48V phantom power provide a pristine front end for high-end condenser or more common dynamic microphones, insuring premium sound quality from the first take to the last. TRS insert points allow you to plug in your favorite dynamic processors before the signal reaches one of the 4 busses, where 24-bit converters transform the analog signal into a digital masterpiece.

Four servo-balanced TRS line inputs with up to +22dBu input levels let you hook up everything from keyboards to guitar preamps, including high-output professional gear. Stereo digital inputs are available via SPDIF jacks, and an additional high-impedance instrument input is included on the front panel for easy access to guitars and basses.

Finally, a fully opto-isolated MIDI input to ensures that there is no annoying ground loop hum or MIDI talk-through noise common with many I/O boxes and sound cards; MIDI output has rock-solid synchronization to USB frame rate to support applications requiring critical sync.

The Omega I/O mixer also features channel peak indicators for each analog input as well as an assignable bargraph meter for the 4 busses. By monitoring the signal before the A/D converters, clipping and distortion can be averted, unlike software-only level monitoring that can miss "overs", ruining the track.

All these gazintas and getoutzas are put together just like a big recording console, with input gain controls, four recording busses, and full monitoring features, in one attractive, portable I/O Mixer. Just plug it into your Mac or PC computer with the included USB cable, and you're instantly ready to capture the moment.

Make no mistake about it - when this interface is set up correctly and the drivers are checked for stability - you will get first class recording sessions out of the Lexicon Omega. Cubase LE (bundled with the product) did not come without it's problems. In the initial setup I had to immediately reinstall because of my misreading the serial number. Four installs later - I am experiencing difficulties on each initial load of the software. After some tweaking and fine tuning (WITHOUT CONSULTING THE MANUAL!) the installation finally stabilized. Here is the good news, though. This machine is not entirely recommended for this box or the software at all. It is a Satellite (Toshiba) W30 and running only Intel Celeron M. That should tell you right away that it is technically underpowered for the job out of the gate! It STILL RUNS and RUNS WELL when you are careful on your task list and do not run unnecessary applications when you are recording multitrack work. The sound quality is pristine and you will be absolutely amazed at the difference in your recording clarity. Additionally - I have more than one Digital Audio interface connected to the USB 2.0 hub on this laptop. Both function when called upon and driver switches are flawless. My final recommendation to you is this: If your situation is similar to what I have described - you will have to be patient on the learning curve to use this. If you have a recommended hardware situation - you are in a better position than I - buy it now without hesitation. I am patient - and if you are not - better check elsewhere. If, on the other hand, you will take the time to tweak this for your system, you will not be sorry if you buy it.

This unit worked great for about 3 weeks and then it suddenly would drop the USB connection and it would show up as 'USB Device' I've reinstalled drivers from the disc many times and even downloaded drivers from the Lexicon website, but after months of messing with it I've given up on it. I'm by no means new to computers and have tried everything I can think of to get this thing working again, I've read on the Lexicon forum about guys with similar problems even seen Omegas for sale on eBay marked "Works Intermittently" so I know it's not just a problem with my unit. Lexicon support says to turn off the power saving mode on your USB hub but that does not work, in the manual it says to reset it by holding two buttons on the front, but that does not fix this problem, it is a bug in the hardware. I would avoid this product.

Not my first choice as audio interface

By CHARLES-MILLER WABENO

I used to own it until it a gave up on me. The sound quality isn't that great. I've experience a lot of drop out, and the unit was getting very hot, thus limiting its usage. Very cheap material and...

The Omega is cheap

By Nada

from Dallas, TX

If you're looking for a simple program that you can just set up and go, keep looking. I set up the Omega studio and had to do a lot of troubleshooting to get it to actually work. Once I made all of the adjustments, and rebooted several times, it worked! for a little while... In the middle of my first project the Omega mixer decided to stop functioning. I called support and they told me I would have to send it in to be fixed or replaced. I've read several other reviews about this product on many different sites and there are alot of dissappointed customers. Don't waste your time and money on this one!

Mixed Feelings

By AboutSound

from Gaithersburg MD

I had used mine for over a year with no problems until I re-arranged my studio, then the drivers started dropping in and out.I found the forum group on the web and sure enough the ribbon cable inside the unit was shorting out on a heat sink.I fixed it by re-directing the ribbon cable off the heat sink and have had no problems since.Besides this one flaw this unit sounds great, has some great features and is easy to use.

Great Big Paper Weight

By Sevrin

from Sydney, NSW

I bought this unit about a year ago and have had nothing but trouble with it. The unit first started playing up about a month after i bought it. It would drop out and not register on my computer. As it was still under warranty I took it to the authorized repairer and it was repaired. I was advised that the reason it was dropping out was due to a design floor that allows a ribbon cable inside to touch part of the circuit board that heats up. This causes the ribbon to melt/break. I posted many times on the Lexicon forum to find that a month after posting my warnings to other potential victims had been deleted by the admin. From what I read before posts started 'vanishing', my Omega wasn't the only one experiencing this same problem! I gave this unit one star because zero stars wasn't an option! So in short, AVOID THIS UNIT LIKE THE PLAGUE!

Dont buy this!!!

By Storiesonwalls

from Raleigh, Nc

I bought this about 7 months ago and ive now gotten rid of both the software included and the base. Although it has many inputs they all have a terrible sound quality. I bought alesis m1active monitors and cakewalk home studio 7 which is cheaper than buying this package. And wow that is they way to go...so much better. Do yourself a favor and dont bother with this.

Horrible Product

By Lou

from Sacramento, CA

I bought this thing from Guitar Center because it had a lot of inputs and also because it came with CuBase LE. However, all of the inputs don't really matter when the unit stops working. There is no power on/off so I would have to manually plug and unplug the unit whenever I'm turning it off. After about 4 months, the USB began losing connection and it would interupt my Reason sessions and freeze Reason completely. I would then have to close the program and lose everything I had just done after the last save. After about 6 months, it just stopped working completely. I tried countless times to make it work again by reinstalling the drives (which is a pain by the way) and re-setting everything and it still didn't run. I tossed this fella along with my money just to end up having to spend another $300 on a midi interface that actually worked. Seriously, don't waste your money like I did.

Best choice period!!!!

By Shannon

from Boise, ID

I have been to studios and home recording setups and I was tired of paying hourly rates to record. I looked into desktop equiptment and didnt want to spend alot of money. The Lexicon Omega was affordable and hands down the ultimate desktop setup. I run mine on Vista with no problems and the quality is amazing. I have total control of everything and can record unlimited tracks to one song. You will not be sorry you purchased this setup. The 2 mic setup is perfect. I use a condensor mic in the background in conjunction with the main mic and it produces top notch reproduction.

Issues with hardware drivers

By cbjr

from Cleveland

The unit itself is a great tool and the cubase software is great (once you figure it out). I have experienced (with what I've found to be the case with may others) issues with the drivers running the USB Audio Interface. At any given moment, the PC with not recognize the hardware and driver association. I've scoured the internet for solutions and not found any that resolve the issue. The manufacturer is of no help, they refused support, stating I would have to buy the full cubase version for several hundred dollars more before I could talk to them. Needless to say, I'm cutting my losses and finding a different product.

Works great sometimes...

By Ben

from Georgia

I have had this product for almost a year now and it is definitely inexpensive and good for someone's first audio interface BUUUUUT! the interface randomly gives out on you when you want it to work. The only way i have found to fix this is to just unplug it and plug it back in which gets VERY old. If you have the money and are looking for professional quality you might want to move on, but if you are a beginner to the world of recording this may work for you. and word to the wise cubase le DOES NOT WORK FOR LEOPARD!
