NEW REVIEW - Looks better than it works

I have a Lexicon Omega that I have been quite fond of. I know, it seems that people love to bash the Omega but I must say that I have been pleased with it. It was clean, and it served me well for the last five years. In fact, it produced my only commercial CD, which listeners have praised the clarity of. When I went on to attempt bigger and better things, I quickly ran out of preamps, and so I set out f\to find another unit with more preamps. I bought a Presponus Firestudio Project, but the drivers wouldn't work with my 64 bit OS, so I returned that. Luckily, Lexicon was hitting the market with the Ionix U82S, and I waited for it to actually hit the shelves. I hooked it up with great enthusiasm, only to find that my mics were too quiet unless I turned the gain up to around the 9 to 9.5 range. Then they suddenly came alive. One slight increase of the gain knob, and now they were too loud and distorting. Yep, every channel was the same - the usable range was between 9.5 and 10 - way too narrow and not workable. The overall output of the entire unit was extremely quiet as well, nothing like my trusted old Omega. I did side by side comparisons with my Omega, using Audio Technica AT4040's, and the Omega simply blew it away. I returned my U82S, and am still hunting for something to replace it with. I also noticed that my Omega has Inserts, whereas the U82S doesn't. Not sure what they were thinking there.
