Synthetic reeds with a natural sound and feel.

Légère now offers Signature Series technology for alto sax. These reeds follow the spectacular success of Légère's Signature Series clarinet reeds, which have been hailed as a breakthrough in synthetic reeds. Signature Series are very playable reeds with a respond nearly identically to cane reeds. They are very natural sounding, well balanced, and very consistent. Signature Series alto sax reeds will not warp and are available in strengths 2 - 3.5.

Legere Signature Series Alto Saxophone Reed Features:

I am a complete novice sax player. Still working on all of the most basic basics. So, when I got my first alto sax my first dilemma was what to use for reeds. I have absolutely NO experience with woodwind instruments whatsoever. I began learning about the synthetic reeds out there and read so many reviews that my head was spinning. For every synthetic reed brand out there, someone both loved and hated them. And I read horror stories about natural cane reeds. I decided that the only way to know was to try them all. Not knowing where to start with weights...I aimed for the middle and got 3 synthetics and a box of naturals. For synthetics I bought a medium Bari Star, a Fibracell 2.5, and a Legere Signature. For naturals I got a 10 pack of Vandorens. All supposed to be 2.5's. New sax, out of the box, untweaked by a service person. Trying to get first notes, out of first sax, with NO experience. I did it...managed to make noise that sounded sax-like a few times. So, I started playing with the reeds. Now a couple of weeks down the road, here is what I think. Legere Signature - This seems to be the most sensitive of all of the synthetics I tried. I can play it with a lighter breath, but it seems to be more sensitive to embouchure. As my novice lips get more tired, I have a harder time getting it to sound right. And if my mouth gets a little dry, not good. Bari Star (Medium)- On the flip side, this is the "stiffest" of the synthetics. It takes stronger breath support and just seems overall harder to play at this early stage of my learning. Fibracell Synthetic - So far this is my favorite synthetic reed. From day one, it was the easiest for me to play and sounded "warmer" than the Bari, but was more predictable in various mouth conditions than the Legere. I can play it a little longer and still sound OK. As my technique continues to improve, I periodically cycle through the synthetics to see how differently they are playing. My experience with natural reeds has remained pretty limited. I have played on one several times and can get decent sounds out of it, but I just like the idea of a synthetic so much that I'm still kinda leaning that direction. Maybe time will change that. This is a fun adventure!
