The Dexter Gordon Legends Series Mouthpiece is an exact reproduction of his original gold plated mouthpiece. Drake Mouthpieces has created this model through an innovative one piece casting method that is completely hand finished. This is unlike most production metal mouthpieces, which are CNC produced (made by machines). Although a very labor-intensive process, this was the only way to get the exact internal dimensions of Gordons original piece, and thus preserve the authentic experience for the performing artist. Each mouthpiece is finished in a deep rich 24 karat gold plating. As part of this unique process, pieces may have very subtle inclusions. This term refers to very small surface fluctuations that are sometimes visible but do not in any way affect the playability of the mouthpiece. These inclusions further contribute to the individuality of each piece.
Dexter Gordon is considered to be the first musician to translate the language of Bebop to the tenor saxophone. His studio and live performance career were both extensive and multifaceted, spanning over 50 years in recorded jazz history. During his career, Gordon played and/or recorded in bands with such contemporaries as Chico Hamilton, Buddy Collette, Lionel Hampton's band, Illinois Jacquet, Marshall Royal, Nat Cole, Harry Edison, the Louis Armstrong and Fletcher Henderson bands and with Charlie Parker.
Many would characterize Gordon's sound as being 'large' and spacious and his tendency to play behind the beat is discernible. Gordons style included his clear, strong, metallic tones, tendencies to bend up to high notes, and his ability to single-tongue and still swing. One of Gordon's idiosyncrasies was to recite the lyrics of each ballad before playing it.
Available tip openings for the Dexter Gordon Legends Series include: Dexters original 6 (.098"), 7 (.105") and 8 (.110").
