Lanikai offers the SM-CE Spalted Mango Concert Ukulele as a striking edition to the Lanikai Custom series. This acoustic-electric ukulele is constructed from gorgeous woods with exotic figuring and highly contrasting tones due to special construction techniques and a meticulous process used for selection.

The SM (Spalted Mango) ukuleles illustrate Lanikai's spirit of experimentation by bringing exciting, new developments to the ukulele world. The SM-CE uke offers exquisite beauty and a very mellow tone, thanks to the solid spalted mango construction. Spalted mango has a unique tonal characteristic that has the midrange of mahogany but the roundness of spruce. The difficulties in crafting an instrument with spalted mango are greatly outweighed by the resulting tone and striking appearance.

This concert ukulele also features an undersaddle pickup (passive) that will enable you to plug in and turn it up in a pinch.

This ukulele is strung with Aquila Nylgut Strings.

Very Satisfied

By Thomas Gonzales

from Lynchburg, Virginia

The Mango wood is highly decorative. The full gloss finish (top, back, sides)is also attractive. Similar to Myrtlewood or Koa, the tonal characteristics of this ukulele are light and crisp; it is very bright and it projects fully. The 'spalted' character of the wood is actually a fungal growth which gives the each body a unique wood pattern. In wood terms, the spalted character does not compromise tone, it is actually very appealing to the eye. The pickup system does not offer balance, volume, tone controls, etc. However, they are not necessary. Once amplified, the ukulele vibrates strongly and produces a pleasing sound. If you have very large hands, this may be somewhat difficult to navigate on the fingerboard as the body size is limited in space, obviously. In this case I would recommend investing in a Tenor Uke. Do not be fooled by the new nylon strings. It does take time for the wood and strings to acclimate and settle given your temperature and humidity specifications. After a month or so with consistent playing, the strings will mature and tuning will not be an issue. Be patient and like any stringed instrument, it will adapt and mature, allowing comfortable playing.

Beautiful Uke!

By Sarah Bonneau

from Sarasota, FL

My wonderful husband and family bought this ukulele for me for Christmas. Not only is it absolutely beautiful, but it plays and sounds like a dream! It has a wonderful tone and sounds fantastic plugged in. I was a little nervous about getting it as I had not had the opportunity to play it before it had its big beautiful bow on it, but I couldn't possibly be more pleased. I love, love, LOVE my ukulele!!

I am shocked at the low quality of this ukulele. I have been dreaming of the perfection of this uke for a while, until I finally brought myself to invest the money in it. It looks nothing like the picture. The coloring is completely different. I understand that mango wood varies quite a bit, but the wood difference (color, constistancy) is way more different from the picture than it should be. Oh, and also, this thing can not hold a tune to save its life. I'm serious, the $85 uke that I have holds a tune infinite times better than this one. I even have new nyglut strings put in. If you want a quality uke, but you don't want to spend thousands of dollars, I would recommend aNueNue. I would also recommend to stay away from this uke.

Ukulele professional

By steve

from charlestown ri

I am sorry but I cannot agree. Until Lanakai perfects the intonation and tuning stability of their uke line there are others out there to choose from at a lower price. The uke at lanakai are gorgeous, sound sweet and the woods are great. If you buy one, change the tuners to grover sta tite, and have the uke set up by a professional (not the guys who rate these uke online) and you will be happier.

Amazing Ukulele

By Tony Snow

from Fort Worth, Texas

I have had this model for a while now and have been more than pleased with it. It is a beautiful instrument and the sound quality is superb. I have played several different ukuleles, but this is one of the best. It stays in tune longer than most and has a wonderful tone. The pickup is quite good as well. The nylgut strings that it comes with are the best out there. Make sure you have those no matter what ukulele you have. Overall, I would fully recommend this instrument to anyone.
