Comments about Lanikai All Mahogany 8-String Tenor Acoustic-Electric Ukulele:

Really a mixed review. The ukulele plays really well at the moment, only because I put a lot of work on it. For a ukulele that sells up to $300, it should be at the very least playable out of the box. I bought this through the online store because I previously tried the same model from a different store and really liked how it played and sound was very good. I went back to purchase it, but it was already sold by the time I got there the second time.

The ukulele shipped with no issues, well packed, UPS delivered on time. Packaging looks original, unopened, shipped from China.

Out of the box, I first noticed the matte finish was scuffed all over the place, looks like a sloppy build, with the top full of scratches. Attempts to buff out the scratches looked visible. The pre-amp and jack screws were loose, fell out of the ukulele first time I took it out of the box.

The action was really high, unplayable. I understand that when you buy a new guitar, the action is set slightly higher so people can adjust according to their playing style, but the initial setup was ridiculous.

I was going to return it, but I noticed Guitar Center discontinued selling this model, and Lanikai also discontinued this model according to their website. I decided to keep it because the neck is straight and the intonation was decent.

I spent a day lowering the action by adjusting the nut and saddle, tapered the bridge as well. Sanded the body lightly and matching the color, re-varnised and sealed the ukulele body. For the screws, I ended up gluing extra wood on the holes so the screws would tighten properly.

Now I have a really nice and deep sounding rhythm chorus instrument, but still has the signature ukulele tone I am looking for.

Not really recommended unless you know how to setup your own instrument or pay a luthier extra to set it up for you. You are better off buying a used one that has already been properly setup.

Comments about Lanikai All Mahogany 8-String Tenor Acoustic-Electric Ukulele:

After trying the same model at a different store, I went ahead and ordered one at a Guitar Center online store (the one I tried at a different shop was sold).

After about a day's worth of work, this ukulele sounded divine.
The neck and the fret board is straight, intonation is perfect. So I decided to keep it.

I ordered a new one, but I was sent one that did not seem to go through good quality control inspection. The packaging was intact, unopened and original. Inside, the ukulele was severely scuffed on the surface. I was expecting a uniform matte finish, but I got one with uneven small scratched surface.

The pegs were a little loose, and had to re-tighten most of them. I was expecting the action to be high which is typical of new equipment, but this one was just ridiculously high and unplayable. I ended up spending some time setting it up myself and was able to get it play right. I ended up refinishing the body paint as well, sanded it lightly and varnished to match the exact color. I expected a little bit of set up, but did not sign up to restore new equipment.

Oh yeah, one other thing, the eq and the 1/4 inch connectors were falling off, screws were missing.

Please stay away from this model if you are ordering it directly online. Instead, go to the store and test and buy when you are ready.
