I've played bass in church for many years and recently was looking for a new bass. I compiled a list of features that i know i wanted and this Lakland has all of them with a reasonable price: 5 string, 35in scale, tooless battery change, active/passive switch, body and bridge through strings, and the wood combos.

Tonally, this thing is very nice, and very versitile. I have played praise and worship, country, and rock on this thing, and it does them well.

One thing to keep in mind; if you string through the body, you need to buy extended length strings, and unfortunately that reduces your string options. For example, i love the Slinky Cobalt strings, but those can only go through the bridge on this bass.

This was the first bass i bought online, i typically perfer going to a shop and trying several out before making a purchase. I have to say i was pleasently surprised by its playability right out of the box. The only adjustments i had to do was tune the strings and about a half turn on the intonation on the E string. I adjust intonation to the 17th frett, so this was really just a minor adjustment. All the others were bang on.

Overall, it's a fantastic bass at a nice price for the features.

I was quite surprised when I removed the back cover. The printed circuit board was dangling loose inside. It was not mounted to anything. Just laying on a bunch of wires. Now, you might think that's acceptable. Yes, for a very cheap bass. But I have another same model Lakland to compare against. On that one, the PCB is secured to a bracket by two screws. And there is a grounding shielding foil making a contact with the foil on the cover. This new bass doesn't have any of that. I also noticed that the older one is made in Korea. The new one is made in Malaysia. Very bad for Lakland.

Comments about Lakland Skyline Deluxe 55-02 5-String Bass:

I am a more "mature" (older) bassist with more than 20 years of Broadway show touring, recording sessions for jingles and movie scores, etc. I have several "high end" basses costing twice the price (Sadowsky, Roscoe, Bossa) and this imported version of the Lakland 55-02 can keep up basses costing twice the price. Only issue that I have dealt with is "fret sprout" right out of the box. That is the condition where the wood is shrinking slightly because of the dryness (low humidity) differential from where the bass was constructed. I contacted Brian @ Lakland and he immediately responded. He told me to get the frets filed by a competent repair-person and they would reimburse me for that amount. In all fairness, I have had other basses that developed this condition and it is a low cost repair bill. Other than that, the bass plays great, balances well on a strap (not a "neck-diver") and gets a wide range of tonal variations. Also love that you can change the "q" of the mid range via dip-switches in the internal cavity. Compare it with top USA basses and it comes off as a bargain.

Comments about Lakland Skyline Deluxe 55-02 5-String Bass:

The Lakland 55-02 is a great versatile bass- I have a older (2006) one that has bartolinis &
It sounds really close to the new 55-02 Indonesia version. The Indonesia has the
4 click switch for mids---nice feature-you can get P bass or Jazz bass
And Stingray tones quickly-( I have one of each also)-
This is the most versatile & comfortable playing 5 string bass ever-
Got a great deal on a blemish -
This is my workhorse -may change out tuners in future-

Comments about Lakland Skyline Deluxe 55-02 5-String Bass:

I recieved this from Musicians Friend on 11-26-2013. Some ash body basses are heavey, this one seems light to me, 9 to 9.5 pound range. The 19mm spaceing works well for me. Very professional articulate sounding bass, from J bass Marcus Miller tone to the thick p bass rock and roll tone. The 3 band eq with blend, coil selector switch, active or passive knob makes this a steal at 1,499.
