Radical Lace Alumitone electric guitar pickups have less resistance and higher output with clear, big frequency response in a completely noise-free passive design. Constructed with aluminum rather than copper, Lace humbuckers have a current-driven design as opposed to conventional voltage-based pickups.
These replaced the stock Black Magic double slug pickups (496R/500T)in a 2004 LP Voodoo I picked-up as a "fixer." NIGHT AND DAY!!! No hum. Gain does what it is supposed to do. No more compensating for dead spots across ranges. It sounds like it is supposed to sound. It's cleaner than my "real" LP Goldtop sounds. Guess I need to order another pair? One negative - the wires were too short and it was more work than it should have been soldering in the neck pickup. Give us an extra inch of wire, guys?
If you don't like getting off the beaten path, you'll miss out when you pass up the Alumitones. These pickups are unlike anything else out there. Lots of clean, musical tone and plenty of volume. Quiet and lightweight. A sustain freak's dream come true. I put a set in a B.C. Rich NJ Mockingbird and it sure came alive. I know I won't be taking them back out.
I took a bit of a gamble by putting guitar pickups in a bass, but it really paid off. After reading the great reviews from guitarists on the Alumitone Humbuckers, I got a pair for my Gibson Les Paul Double-cut bass. The original Gibson TB-Plus pups picked up a tremendous hum in half the rooms I play regularly, so they had to be replaced, and Humbucker-size bass pickups are hard to find. I tried EMG Select series, and Rio Grande Pit Bulls and didn't like either. But the Lace Alumitones are simply awesome. I have plenty of low end and super clean highs. These pickups are so clear and responsive compared to any pickup I've ever used, I'm just amazed at the sound. I like these so much, I'm putting them in my Les Paul Standard Bass as well. BTW: I know Lace says you don't need active electronics for these, and they are fantastic all by themeselves, but I have an Aguilar preamp in the Double-cut making the Alumitones sound even better. I did contact Lace to get their opinion on using the guitar pickups for bass. They were very helpful and a pleasure to deal with. I'd give these 10 stars if I could!
