Overview

After 30 years of effort, LR Baggs has created the Anthem Tru-Mic acoustic guitar microphone which does what every amplified acoustic guitarist has dreamed about and no other pickup manufacturer has been able to create yet-unlocked the potential of a microphone to capture the very essence of your guitar with high-feedback resistance for demanding stages. Not obvious, but equally important, is that the natural ease and dynamics of the Anthem Tru-Mic guitar microphone liberates you to play freely without having to compensate for the pickup system. Now you're free to play the way you like, plugged in or not.

For the Anthem acoustic guitar mic, LR Baggs used no modeling or illusions. It's not "like" a mic. It's not "like" your guitar. This is a mic, and what you will experience is your guitar-loud and with the fidelity and dynamics that come from a real microphone.

Tru-Mic Technology
At the heart of the LR Baggs Anthem guitar mic is a revolutionary type of microphone. Using a proprietary noise-canceling mic, the Anthem Tru-Mic eliminates any annoying honky or boxy qualities that have been previously associated with internal miking, leaving the pure and natural sound of your guitar the way only a real mic is capable of doing. Because this LR Baggs acoustic mic is positioned within a few millimeters of the guitar top, it has very high gain before feedback. The mic housing mounts easily to the bridge plate and the mic capsule hovers just 3mm above its surface to take advantage of the PZM or boundary effect. This Tru-Mic technology picks up the sound of the vibrations of the entire soundboard and makes the LR Baggs guitar mic unusually free from placement issues.

Mic and Piezo Pickup: A Radical Technology
The sound quality and feedback resistance of the Anthem Tru-Mic acoustic microphone now allows the mic to be the primary sound source in a mic/pickup system. This is unlike previous systems where only a small amount of the mic could be used to add some air to the dominant pickup signal. This is a radical new relationship between a mic and a pickup, as all of the detail, warmth, and personality of your guitar is captured by the Tru-mic. The mic is augmented, for only the very lowest frequencies, capturing the punch and authority of your playing, by the LR Baggs Element under saddle pickup.

Controls
The featherweight control unit controls all of the essentials, volume, mix, and phase. It nestles securely just inside of the soundhole for easy fingertip access. The mix control allows a full-blend between the augmented mic and full-range pickup. A multi-segment battery check allows you to maximize battery life and peace of mind.

Under the hood is an all-discrete preamp/mixer with the pure, clean LR Baggs signature sound that is trusted by top artists around the world. Thanks to it's intelligent engineering, you can just plug in and enjoy the real sound of your acoustic guitar and the way you play, night after night.

As a player, the acoustic guitar is my main instrument. I've been playing long enough that my guitars run in the thousands of dollars rather than hundreds. I just put the Anthem in my Santa Cruz OM/PW this week. I am truly knock out! I've had numerous Fishman, B Band and the K&K systems but the Anthem I believe is considerably superior. When you own a expensive guitar that sounds incredible you don't want put a system in it that mangles the beauty of it's sound. I've have spent lots of time and money in the search for pure acoustic tone. I have never been happier with the sound of my guitar than I am with this set up. When I picked up my guitar from my luthier who works in a high end acoustic shop he was impressed after he installed the Anthem in my guitar. Being a newer product he had not heard it yet. He was so impressed he was going to tell to the guys who run the retail side of the shop to place a order with L R Baggs and have some of these systems in stock. For those who may shy away from a mic set up because of feedback, I've already done several gigs playing pretty loud at times and never once had any feedback issues. The Anthem is a smart purchase for those who are seeking to amplify yet preserve the pure acoustic sound of your guitar.

Had this pro fitted. Worked fine but the tone is very warm and full of low end. Being fitted to a Martin (00-28) with a warm low end rich sound was not a great idea. My mistake, but be warned. The combination resulted in way too much low end giving me headaches with low frequency feedback.
In the end I had it removed and fitted a Fishman Matrix Infinity. Much better balanced sound.
I guess there is a reason why Martins with Factory fitted pickups use Fishman.

Comments about LR Baggs Anthem Tru-Mic Acoustic Microphone/Piezo Pickup System:

like everyone always looking for the most natural sound. tried lots of pickups. results from muddy to harsh to electric ! i play rockin tunes so i need a low end drive without a low end howl! this pickup is the best . had it 3 days and did my first show. played 2 hours straight. never had so many comments on my guitar soud ! from what kind of effects are you using to how many strings do you have ! i don't use any effects. i just play hard . i'm using an early 70's fg 1000 yamaha. it really sounded like my guitar . really really satisfied ! if you have a good sounding guitar this might be worth checking out ! i would have liked the blend control to have a center notch. on stage you can't hear whats coming out the sound system so it's difficult to hit the same blend all the time. still great !

My Taylor never sounded so good live...

By Matt Bulthuis

from Chicago, IL

Comments about LR Baggs Anthem Tru-Mic Acoustic Microphone/Piezo Pickup System:

Bought this for my Taylor K-14c which had a Fishman Acoustic Matrix Natural I (aftermarket) previously installed. I love the way the guitar sounded with the well-broken in Koa (its a '98) and the cedar top, but the live/amplified sound was terrible. I carefully replaced the Fishman myself (I have tools but I'm far from a guitar tech) in about an hour and am amazed at the depth and fullness of the sound now. I ran it through my stereo Trace acoustic amp for a few hours dialing it in and was thrilled with the sound; even at 75% volume there was no feedback unless I held the soundhole up to my amp. After that I played through the Bose PA system at my church for a practice and was really blown away. In my opinion it was superior to my other guitars (314ce koa and 855ce 12-string) which are both much newer and have Taylor's latest Expression system. Definitely a worthy investment and I assure you that if you are going from an under saddle to the anthem you will be amazed. Not even a hint of feedback despite some heavy playing and monitors and house with good volume. Most of my playing is flat picking and rhythmic strumming, so I play pretty hard and this pickup still sounds great and doesn't feed back. And its controls are flexible enough to adjust the sound for my Trace amp and the house PA at church. Awesome. I definitely have found my pickup. I wish it was a little cheaper; I would buy one for my other guitars as well! Pros: Great, tunable sound/tone; easy install with only one hole needed for the jack; soundhole controls attractive and low profile Cons: expensive (IMHO)

You have got to hear this!

By Tom Buratovich

from Visalia, CA

Comments about LR Baggs Anthem Tru-Mic Acoustic Microphone/Piezo Pickup System:

I have had three pickups in my Martin - the thin line that can with it (nuff said), a composite pick-up with a mic and saddle pickup which was good but quirky, and now the Anthem. I have never heard my guitar sound so clean. In the store in which I had it installed the tech plugged my guitar into a bass amp and even then the clarity of sound reproduction was amazing. I am still dumbfounded by how small and lightweight this pickup is, and yet it performs inordinately well. I love it!

In my case, it needed more.

By R E Rawhoof

from Rockford, Il.

Comments about LR Baggs Anthem Tru-Mic Acoustic Microphone/Piezo Pickup System:

I was very disappointed with the results after the system was installed. A very knowledgable music tech told me about the LR Bags Para D.I. and highly recommended that I give it a try. I bought it since I was already commited for 300.00. Wow, what a revelation. This is really a review of the LR Baggs Para D.I. With a little tweaking, I got the sound I wanted. Between the Anthem system and the Para D.I. the soiund is incredible. I have a Taylor "Chris Proctor" sig. that has a fantastic sounding pic up/mic system and played throught the D.I. has made it even better. I co-host a open mic at a local College and cannot wait to hear how the other musicians guitars will sound. I supply the P.A. and will have the D.I. available for others to try out. My recommendation is that you buy the LR Baggs Para Acoustic D.I. with this pic up system. If the pic up sounds good on its own for you just think how it will sound with a balanced signal from the D.I.

WOW

Comments about LR Baggs Anthem Tru-Mic Acoustic Microphone/Piezo Pickup System:

All I can say is that this pick up brings out a noticably more beautiful sound on my Martin Clapton signature guitar. The low notes are more full, & being able to control the balance is wonderful, so I can adapt to the specific setting in which I am playing. I have only had it a couple weeks, but it is wonderful.

Fantastic results with LR Baggs Anthem System

By Jeff Coult

from Duvall, WA

Comments about LR Baggs Anthem Tru-Mic Acoustic Microphone/Piezo Pickup System:

I received this kit 2 days after ordering it (fast!). I performed the install myself (I am not a professional shop) and even though pro install is recommended I had great results! Install was straight-forward, and the resulting tone is better than I thought possible from a system like this! Bright and punchy, and warm. Two thumbs up!

Sounds like your guitar, not a pickup.

By Matthew

from New Castle, PA

Comments about LR Baggs Anthem Tru-Mic Acoustic Microphone/Piezo Pickup System:

If you're looking for a way to amplify the natural sound of your acoustic guitar, this is it. I couldn't be happier with the results the Anthem has given me in my Taylor 214 CE-G. The stock pickup in my Taylor was the ES-T which is just a traditional undersaddle piezo that sounded fine for what it was. The Anthem Tru-Mic, however, is on a completely different level than traditional acoustic pickups. The combination of the mic and the undersaddle Element pickup blend to make a truly acoustic sounding pickup. I'll definitely be looking to LR Baggs in the future for all of my acoustic guitars.

Comments about LR Baggs Anthem Tru-Mic Acoustic Microphone/Piezo Pickup System:

This is what I've searched and spent a ton of money trying to find. Sold a 714 Taylor because no matter what I tried ,I couldn't find a usable tone for the band. I returned to a Breedlove Pro Series D/25SRH I've had and loved for years. Put the Anthem in and my prayers have been answered ,the search is over. This is the best pickup combination I've ever experienced ,it truly sounds like my guitar only louder. I couldn't be happier , and thank you to Caleb at LR Baggs for his answers to many questions, his customer service was so very helpful. P.S.- I'm running it straight thru an Orchid di to a pa,sounds so pure ,rich, and awesome.

Horrible! Hopefully the issue is the person who installed it.

    By Chris Lowe

    from Grand Rapids, MI

Comments about LR Baggs Anthem Tru-Mic Acoustic Microphone/Piezo Pickup System:

I'm hoping the issue is the install or something wrong with the product. All I get is the mic portion of the mix, which is thin and tinny sounding, with a ton of reverb. For literally buying the most expensive pickup Guitar Center had without having to do a cut job, I'm terribly disappointed. Even with turning the gain all the way up, I'm getting nearly nothing through our system at church. My main guitar has a Baggs Duet, and the sound is amazing, with plenty of gain. Anyway, I hope that it was just a poor setup, and nothing else. But if not, and this is what Baggs wants this much money for, save your cash.

The way to go if you are not satisfied with piezo pickups

    By Rick

    from Drexel Hill Pa.

Comments about LR Baggs Anthem Tru-Mic Acoustic Microphone/Piezo Pickup System:

I first bought and had this installed in a 44 year old Crown 12 string I had restored mostly because I didn't like piezos in 12 strings. I was extremly happy that the guitar didn't sound "electronic" and it afforded me the opportunity to get a miked sound without having to set up a microphone in my studio to record it. I was so happy with it I bought another from Guitar Center (great service) and had it installed in my Martin D35. I think that says it all.

Comments about LR Baggs Anthem Tru-Mic Acoustic Microphone/Piezo Pickup System:

After researching for months and talking to dozens of professional acoustic musicians, I pulled the trigger. So happy I fired that bullet too! I had my new p/u installed by my luthier for $40 into my Taylor 812c. I have played with this for about 2 years now for all my live shows ranging from small clubs to festivals. I plug directly into the soundboard and with a little adjustment by the sound engineer, it sounds just as though I was playing into a high quality studio mic, but I can move around! I have added a Venue DI into the mix for more control of sound, but that sweet box will be in it's own review.
In conclusion, if you play live, and you like to dance around as you play without sacrificing the tonal qualities of your fine handcrafted work of art, don't compromise - after all you didn't when you bought your guitar!

Comments about LR Baggs Anthem Tru-Mic Acoustic Microphone/Piezo Pickup System:

I ordered this product primarily to boost the weak input signal from my Taylor 814 (with L.R. Baggs Anthem) going into the P.A. (I had been using a Radial JDI for this purpose previously, the sound of which was wonderful but, as I said, weaker than desired going into the mixer. I wanted to achieve superb sound while keeping the gain on the P.A. lower.) My secondary aim was to thicken up the sound of the first and second strings, perhaps achieve a more balanced tone across the high notes, particularly during leads. And my third objective was to have more control of possible feedback during live acoustic performance. I chose this active D.I. over others, such as the Tonebone PZ Pre and L.R. Baggs Venue and Para D.I.'s, because it seemed to suit my needs best given my other equipment. (I have a PedalTrain Jr. with a TC Electronics Polytune Mini Tuner, Rothwell Love Squeeze Compressor, MXR 10 Band EQ, Xotic RC Boost, MXR Carbon Copy, and Strymon Big Sky.) The features of the Session seemed to complement my gear. The Session has performed wonderfully. I like the LED display for setting gain appropriately (and muted). The notch and high pass filters work like a charm without killing the beautiful tone of the guitar. I so appreciate the 48V phantom power feature of the Session. I don't want to have to worry about batteries or power supplies. It's plug-and-play ready. The saturation is fine. I use it a little to thicken tone but not much. The Session's compression evens out the tone as much as anyone would like, I believe. I have it set rather low so that there is plenty of juice for leads, but I can see how one would use it quite a bit for performances involving mainly strumming or recording. In sum, the Session has improved my tone, given me more options as an acoustic performer, and with that the knowledge that I will achieve superb sound and avoid possible feedback. I'm pleased with my purchase.

Captures the Glistening Ring of my 12-string

                    from Lone Pine, CA

Comments about LR Baggs Anthem Tru-Mic Acoustic Microphone/Piezo Pickup System:

I bought this used, in mint condition; the price break plus seasonal discount cut the price considerably. I had this installed by the guitar tech at my local GC. The only real problem arose from the non-standard binding on 12-string guitars. He sanded it down a bit and the controls fit right in. The double-sided tape that holds the controls in place came lose and needed to be replaced. These are all minor issues. The sound of my Martin through the anthem is superb. Dialing back the microphone's input helps cut some of the echo in the tone. I used to play this guitar with some chorus to help fatten the sound when amplified; that is no longer the case. The Anthem reproduces all the glistening, ringing tones that characterize 12-string guitars. The output is fantastic. There is so much crisp punch from the piezo, and then the microphone level can be adjusted to cover the "quack" and to add substance to the amplified sound. I have yet to experience any feedback from the mic, even at high volumes. The controls are unobtrusive and intuitive; they are easy to adjust while playing, if necessary. This pick-up combo is just what I was looking for. Well done, L. R. Baggs!
