The Orpheus Valley Sofia Classical acoustic guitar features a solid red cedar top and solid sapelli back and sides. I had my heart set on a acoustic electric Takamine with cool features like an on board tuner. I pickup up the kremona Sofia and the Takamine sounded like cardboard by comparison. Yes there are high end made in Spain classical guitars that sound this good but they cost twice as much. I purchased it on the spot. The fit and finish has minor inperfections but this proves this is really a hand made instrument. The sound is sweet indeed.
I first played a Sofia several years ago and loved the sound. It's strong in the mid and bass notes, without washing out the high end. Last year I found one at GC that had a damaged machine head. After several visits to GC to play the guitar and try to make a deal (and months of patience), GC finally accepted my offer. I walked away a happy man. I figured I could find a replacement set of heads on-line and was hoping to find the exact VanGent heads that were stock on the guitar. After several days of searching, I finally reached out to Kremona USA to see if they could sell me a replacement set. Within a few minutes of my message, I received a reply from Nikolay. He was attending the NAMM show but promised to send me a new set of heads free of charge when he returned. I explained that the damage was not a factory issue and that I was willing to pay for the heads, but he sent me the heads free of charge anyway. Now my Sofia sounds great and looks like new. I couldn't be happier with the guitar or the service from Kremona. I've had some follow-up communications with Nikolay regarding string recommendations and I've also been experimenting with the setup. The factory setup was a bit high, but I've lowered it and installed some high tension D'Adarrio's and have noticed improvement on the high end. I also find the shape of the neck to be very comfortable. It has a flatter profile, which I find helpful when playing the high tension strings. This is the best guitar purchase I've made, and I now have 11 guitars, including five other classicals.
This guitar was by far the best guitar I played in it's price range. It was even better than guitar beyond it's price range. When I walked into the Guitar Center in Roseville, CA, I had my heart set on a Takamine. When I compared the two guitars it was obvious which instrument was the superior of the two. It far exceeded my expectations for a guitar priced around $650. It had amazing lows and sweet highs. The fret board felt amazing. The weight was perfect and it was beautifully finished. I could not believe this instrument! It was incredibly playable. I highly recommend this instrument! I was a music therapy intern at the Vet's Home in Yountville, CA and one of the home members there had a Ramirez guitar. That guitar was awesome, but she said she liked my guitar better! They were very close in quality. I honestly, think the Sophia had a better look than the Ramirez! Ramirez Guitars don't usually sell for less than $1,500 and the Sophia was half the price! Wow! The Sophia - SC plays like one of the high priced guitars! I get so many compliments when I play the Sophia. I have had my Sophia - SC for about two years and it has never let me down. It is so reliable and of high quality. Bone nut and a bone bridge! You can't beat that! The sound is crystal clear and what I want to play is not limited to the guitar at all. I have this guitar to thank for helping my performances be as successful as they have been!
