Overview

The minilogue is not a refresh of an old-time favorite, but instead a completely original concept that’s been elegantly designed from the ground-up for today’s modern producer. There’s nothing to emulate, nothing to model after, just 100% pure analog synthesis that is fully programmable for a seemingly endless possibility of sound creation. Find inspiration it its sound with features including a polyphonic step and motion sequencer, on board tape-style delay, multiple sound shaping and filter options, and an oscilloscope display. All of these seamlessly integrated features make minilogue as fun and easy to use as it is powerful. It's the next-generation analog synthesizer for musicians of all types.

True Analog Sound
The synth circuits for minilogue are all new ground up designs, delivering a synthesizer experience like no other. Unprecedented in this class, it’s a four-voice polyphonic true-analog synth with an interface that's designed for accessibility. Whether you're performing live or producing in the studio, the minilogue is the fastest way for the user to explore and implement real analog synthesis in any situation.

The structure consists of 2VCO, 1VCF, 2EG, 1VCA, and 1LFO. The minilogue's unique wave shape capability lets you fine-tune the oscillators’ harmonics, creating the most divine sounds and compositions. The minilogue is also equipped with a variety of powerful types of modulation including cross modulation, oscillator sync, and ring modulator, as well as a delay with a high-pass filter. Powerful sound creation and rich variety are the true hallmarks of an analog synthesizer.

Polyphony and Presets—Perfect
minilogue goes beyond analog synths in its price range by adding 200 preset locations. Select a program for instant access to great sounds—ranging from thick basses and deep pads, to brilliant polyphonic leads and atmospheric sounds. No need to have deep synthesis knowledge; just choose a sound and tweak— a workflow that is very familiar with musicians today. For those who want to dive deeper into the heart and soul of minilogue’s engine, the minilogue can hold 200 programs; with 100 editable factory programs included, and 100 locations serving as blank canvases on which to create your next analog masterpiece. Each preset can also hold a step sequence and delay settings along with the sounds you create.

Voice Modes
Selectable voice modes let you freely configure the four voices for performance. The voices can be set to 4-note polyphony for chords or layered for thick basses and leads. Other modes cover a range of sounds from octave shifted bass explosions to delicately staggered layered triggering.

Eight Voice Modes:

  • POLY - operates as a four-voice polyphonic synthesizer
  • DUO - operates as a unison two-voice polyphonic synthesizer
  • UNISON - operates as an all-unison mono synthesizer
  • MONO - operates as a mono synth with sub-oscillator
  • CHORD - produces chords
  • DELAY - voices 2-4 sound consecutively at a delay following voice
  • ARP - an arpeggiator operates with up to four voices
  • SIDE CHAIN - when a note sounds, the volume of the preceding voice is lowered

16-Step Sequencer
Get creative with the intuitive 16-step sequencer with motion sequence recording capabilities, and make your sound truly come to life. The minilogue provides real-time recording with overdubbing, and step recording that lets you record simply by consecutively specifying notes, giving you a great way to create phrases and performances.

Oscilloscope Visualizes the Sound
The OLED display will show the waveform as you sculpt your sound. Visual feedback is both educational and entertaining, and represents a first on a hardware synthesizer.

Build Quality
The uniquely curved, sand-blasted 2mm aluminum front panel, metal shaft potentiometers, solid, chassis-mounted metal shaft potentiometers and rubber-coated knobs give the roadworthy minilogue a standout look and feel to complement its powerful and dynamic sound creation capabilities.
Sync with groove machine.

Analog for All - nice surprises and huge range

By Josh

from NJ

See all my reviews

Pros

  • 2 Oscillators per voice allows for massive mono
  • 4 LFO's - one per voice (allows for phase drift)
  • Amazingly comfortable and ergonomic
  • Can assign Glide as dedicated knob (Tempo)
  • Can route guitar through filter and delay
  • Careful use of envelope routing= amazing results
  • Drums, Organs, Flutes, Strings...
  • Easy to learn sound design with this layout
  • Filter is playable (with 2 Oscillators too)
  • Latest firmware REALLY improves env "clicking"
  • Pitch Bend lever routes to many attributes
  • Re-tuning osc's is easy (and needed after 2 hrs)
  • Set pots to "jump", "catch" or "scale"
  • Thick sheet metal top, REAL wood back

Cons

  • Audio In signal cannot trigger notes or gate
  • Modulation wheel (external MIDI) routes to Noise
  • No CV in/out
  • Oscillators do get out of tune after a few hours
  • Pitch bend lever controls only 1 thing at a time
  • Sequencer (16 step) is somewhat limiting
  • Sus. pedal (external MIDI) not routed to release

Best Uses

  • ... rather than digital sound menus
  • Laying down a bassline to accompany guitar
  • Performance w/ a band (not main instrument)
  • Using your ears to mimic or invent a sound

Comments about Korg minilogue Polyphonic Analog Synthesizer:

Issues first:
1) Online, you'll see lots of complaints about "clicking envelopes" - it was definitely obvious. When shipped, it comes with firmware 1.04. As soon as I upgraded to firmware 1.11, clicking almost disappeared - it's now more of a "character" type of click rather than "why is that so loud."

2) I plan to experiment to see if I can re-route the Mod wheel to something like LFO rate or others (currently routes to noise pot). Same with Sustain... Sustain seems to open the VCA EG sustain, but sustain pedal should really impact the release in my view, not sustain.

3) The Minilogue was plugged in and on for about 3 hours last night, fresh out of the box. While doing a design for a synth lead based on a Citizens & Saints song, I noticed the Oscillators were out of tune (not detuned... completely off pitch). I hit SHIFT+REC, osc's retuned and then it sounded fine. After a few hours, the keyboard bottom gets quite hot; that probably affects the tuning of the oscillators.

Surprises and Nice features:
1) No dedicated glide pot for adjusting mono synth slides on the fly, but within a patch you can sync Portamento to BPM rate, and the BPM is governed by the Tempo pot. BAM! Dedicated Glide pot.
2) Playing the Filter is such an awesome feature - it's like a third oscillator. I created a great deep organ sound using the 2 oscillators and the filter with high resonance (tune Filter to oscillators first). Can also play filter by itself (bass, or high whistle).
3) Pitch EG (Osc 2 only) is an awesome feature, along with cross mod.
4) EG can route to LFO rate or intensity, and by adjusting attack and decay, with LFO affecting filter, you can get it to play a couple delayed notes, or slide up or whatever you want to do with the EG - my favorite feature.
5) Delay has some noise (LP record type noise), but is GREAT. I piped my acoustic/electric guitar through this, and I was impressed at the results - you can dampen with filter, and then set delay.

Awesome Analog Polysynth

By Ben

from Huntsville, AL

Verified Buyer

Comments about Korg minilogue Polyphonic Analog Synthesizer:

I've owned many synthesizers over the years from Moog, Roland, Korg and many of the other major players in the synthesizer industry, and this is one of the best values for the money out there. The Minilogue has a massive sound, is easy to use, fun to play, and just sounds awesome.

I think it is a great option for someone new to synthesis, as it covers just about every facet of subtractive synthesis imaginable. It also gives you a 16 step sequencer and a built in delay. MIDI over USB. and Korg just released a patch librarian so you can add patches to the unit from your computer. Seasoned synthesists should also find it appealing, especially since it is a modern analog polysynth at a third the price of its closest competitors.

Downsides- they keys are small. Larger than minikeys, but still small. If this really bothers you, you can always plug a MIDI keyboard into it. The construction doesn't seem as solid as I had hoped. The aluminum faceplate is nice, but it and the plastic housing seems pretty lightweight, like it couldn't take much abuse. The HPF seems to have a limited range, although hopefully they can address that in future firmware updates.

Great Synth

Comments about Korg minilogue Polyphonic Analog Synthesizer:

This is a great synth, and even better with the July 4th sale. These were backordered but I received this in a few days after I ordered it. I have to thank the Hollywood store for recommending this syntn, and GC for their excellent service.

One of he best features is the delay mode, if you raise the feedback the loop self oscillates! Poly mode is sweet too. And you can add motion sequence.

Patches are easy to create and you can build great sounds very quickly, and then save them. No need to add any FX after this synth.

If your interested, just buy it, you won't be disappointed.
