Overview

Following in the footsteps of the monotron, monotribe, and MS-20 Mini analog synthesizers, Korg announces the Volca series. volca is a new lineup of EDM production tools. These powerful and fun-to-use true-analog devices deliver a diverse array of fat sounds that can be obtained only from an analog synthesizer. Each is also equipped with sequencing/recording capabilities for intuitively generating performances. Multiple volcas can be used in tandem via the vintage-style sync in/out, and with your favorite DAW software or MIDI keyboard via MIDI In. Battery operation and built-in speakers mean that you can conveniently play anywhere and anytime. These are the next-generation analog synthesizers, bringing you the ultimate sounds and grooves with ease and depth. Whether used together or by themselves, the volca series is poised to inject true analog power into any performance or studio setup!

Even today, more than thirty years after the age dominated by analog synthesizers, we just can't let go of the sound of analog rhythm machines. Those thick sounds have the power to stand up to guitar and acoustic drums, and are still indispensable for track-making or live performance. The volca Beats gives you those analog drums plus the easy-to-use step sequencer of the Electribe; it lets you turn your inspiration into reality and generate beats with the best high quality sounds.

Features
  • Powerful analog drum sounds
  • Real analog sounds created with reference to classic rhythm machines
  • Six editable analogue parts with one knob per function for easy editing
  • Maximum effect from minimal parameters - a unique advantage of analog
  • PCM sound engine expands possibilities when used with analog sounds
  • Loop sequencer distilled from the Electribe series
  • Electribe-style 16-step sequencer with eight memory patches
  • Stutter function generates repeated triggers that dramatically change the sequence
  • Active Step function generates new bass lines by removing or inserting steps.
  • Step Jump function instantly plays only the step you're pressing
  • Convenient functions for incredible ease of use
  • Sync In and Out allows clock sync of multiple instruments from the volca Series as well as Korg's Monotribe
  • MIDI In for note entry, plus external sync and control from your DAW

frankly, i love the old school sounds. likely because it was what i grew up listening to - roland tr 808's and 909's are my equivalent of a rickenbacker. also, like the classic rickenbacker, the 808 and 909 comes with an extraordinarily steep price tag. so for $150, the volca beats are pretty much in a league of their own. while i've heard "professionals" equate them to "toys" and while the majority of the videos on youtube have been made by people who seemingly have never heard a house or techno track from the 80s/90s, i'd say that the output on this little machine has plenty to offer for the majority of bedroom producers. extremely compact, very intuitive, a decent sound bank with plenty of options to fine tune, highly mobile (battery operated and a headphone jack), and a kick drum that (when played through my studio monitors) is thunderous enough to rattle windows and annoy the neighbors. i haven't gotten around to recording anything yet but i can already feel that this little box is perhaps best used as a live instrument and/or an accompaniment to a dj set. midi in makes it easy to hook up a keyboard if your fingers are too fat for the little buttons and the stutter functions and a quick bit of swingy fun. chaining them to other volca devices (so far i have the bass as well) is extremely easy and a patch cord is included in the box. cons: my biggest beef with it so far is that the sequencer is only 16 steps, which is fairly limiting if you planned on building a larger beat. playing it live is a pretty easy workaround, though. also, it doesn't come with a power supply, so you have to either stock up on batteries or head over to radioshack if you plan on using them for hours on end... which you likely will.

LOVE THIS!! GREAT PIECE OF GEAR / GREAT PRICE! EASY TO USE!

Comments about Korg Volca Beats Analog Drum Machine:

I'm a songwriter- Not really a tech guy. I've never been great with Sequencer/Drum Machine technology, but this piece is so easy to use that I'm really eager to see how far I can go with it! I massively prefer having an outboard unit such as this with physical buttons and knobs. Great sounds and easily manipulated- I love this thing. I've had Korg items in the past which I really liked (I was particularly fond of my Korg Pandora's Box PXR-4 Digital Four Track recorder until a band mate lost it at a gig years ago.). Korg is a super-solid brand with intelligent design and easy-to-use, reliable quality products. Plus, for the price, I've got to say I'm extremely impressed.

Right to the point... it does, very well, exactly what Korg says it does. Any comments you may read about missing features that the writer wishes this box had, are simply not taking the cost into account. This is the best bang for buck - maybe ever. LOL! The build quality and feel are professional. The sounds are authentic. I'm loving it!

      offsetting the other ridiculous review

      By orrin sharp-pierson

      from ny

Comments about Korg Volca Beats Analog Drum Machine:

with reference to the first and only other review of the product. analog refers to the synthesis engine not that it will sound like somebody playing a real drum kit. perhaps you want the $12,000 roland if you want realistic sounds. if you aren't willing to pay that, just download a drum loop from google. never bothered reviewing anything before but this caught be bored and irritated by the other review. _____ for everyone else that knows what this is supposed to be, easily the cheapest analog drum machine available. not really worth complaining about features.

        Maybe I expected too much.

        By Don Freeman

        from Pleasant Hill, CA.

Comments about Korg Volca Beats Analog Drum Machine:

The description, as well as the fact that this is labeled an analog device, led me to expect that the sounds it produced would sound like a drum. You know with drum sounding,er, sounds. If this is what an analog drum machine sounds like, I'd hate to hear a digital drum machine. Like I said in the title of this review I'm not sure if what I expected was unrealistic or if I just misinterpreted the terms used. Therefore I gave in 3 stars as maybe it is my fault for expecting too much. For electronic music it is pretty cool, has a lot of functions that work quite well, and the drum parts sound, well, electronic. But if you are expecting it to sound like a drummer in a box (like I was) you will be sorely disappointed. I have computer freeware that makes more realistic drum sounds. Please check out the videos for this item before you buy it (like I DID NOT), if they represent the kind of sound you are looking for then this may well work for you.

        Verified Buyer

Comments about Korg Volca Beats Analog Drum Machine:

Korg's latest push into super-affordable real analog electronic music gear is brilliant. The Volca beats is cheap, easy to use, portable, and has a good analog/vintage drum machine sound.

The kick drum from that tiny box sounds huge, the 2 toms are great, and the snare is decent (keep in mind that the difficulty of analog snare sounds is what drove the success of sampling drum machines). There are also 4 decent PCM (not analog) sounds.

The utility functions (save, recall, etc) are basic and easy to learn. The manual is basically a one page diagram.

I have an Akai MPC for drum sampling and MIDI sequencing and I was actually considering getting into a vintage Roland analog drum machine, but the Volca satisfies that urge (for now) at less than 1/10th the price.

It would be nice if there was a MIDI out, so that you could use the Volca as a little sequencer for other gear (but at this low price point, you can't blame them for not satisfying every whim of MIDI nerds like me).
