Offers both tuner and metronome functions simultaneously or independently. Its large LCD-type needle delivers both the accuracy of an LCD and the excellent visibility of a needle indicator. It also has LED indicators that show pitch deviation or blink to indicate the tempo, making the TM-40 a highly visual tool. Provides quick and accurate coverage of a wide spectrum of notes and pitches for wind, string, keyboard, and most other instruments
Excellent Functionality and a Wide Detection Range
With a detection range of C1 (32.70Hz) - C8 (4186.01Hz), the TM-40 provides quick and accurate coverage of a wide spectrum of notes and pitches for wind, string, keyboard, and most other instruments. Even low-pitched instruments with complex overtone structures are detected with the precision you expect from Korg. A built-in high-sensitivity mic allows acoustic instruments such as guitar and ukulele to be tuned easily and accurately.
In addition to the visual tuning guide provided by the meter, you can use the Korg TM-40's built-in speaker to produce a tuning reference pitch (Sound Out). This is convenient for tuning by ear and is also useful for ear training. By pressing the Sound switch, you can select the reference pitch from A5 to B4 (usually used as the tuning standard for wind instruments). And by holding down the Sound switch, you can select a mode in which you step through chromatic pitches from C4 to C5 (one octave).
The TM-40's Calibration setting is adjustable in a range of 410-480Hz to accommodate a variety of tuning standards. The calibration can be adjusted in 1Hz steps, letting you accurately tune to any song or key. Memory backup is also provided so that the Calibration and Sound Out ("12 NOTES" or "ABb") settings are remembered even when the power is turned off.
Pure Major Third and Minor Third Interval Markings
When intervals of a third are played out of tune in the context of a brass band, orchestra, or other ensemble, it is particularly noticeable. But those intervals can be made to blend more pleasantly by slightly adjusting them (relative to the equal-tempered pitch) to a pure major or minor third. The Korg TM-40's meter scale provides markings to indicate pitches of a pure major and pure minor third relative to a selected pitch. By tuning your instrument so that the meter's indicator needle points to these markings, you can ensure beautiful harmonies when playing in an ensemble. This capability is very useful not only for wind instruments but also for vocal or a cappella practice.
The appropriate note to adjust when tuning to a pure major/minor third will depend on the music you are playing.
The metronome section of the Korg TM-40 offers convenient functions for practicing a variety of music.
Beat mode—choose from preset patterns. Beat mode lets you choose a preset tempo and time signature, and Tap mode lets you specify your own tempo. The compact TM-40's contains a large speaker that produces a clear and distinct metronome sound.
13 rhythm variations for practicing a wide range of styles. The TM-40 contains 13 types of rhythms that cover 0—7 beats per measure as well as doublets, triplets, triplets with center beats omitted, quadruplets, and quadruplets with center beats omitted. Tempo is easily adjustable in a range of 40—208BPM.
Sophisticated rhythms, such as triplets/quadruplets with center beats omitted, give you the flexibility to cover a wide range of styles from classical to rock and jazz. Since the volume is adjustable, the TM-40 can meet the needs of any situation, from private practice in a small room to sessions in a large studio.
When using the Tuner and Metronome functions simultaneously, triplets, triplets with center beats omitted, quadruplets, and quadruplets with center beats omitted are not available.
Tempo Adjustment Options
When you adjust the tempo setting, you can choose that the tempo value will increment or decrement either in "full-step" mode (steps of a single unit) or "pendulum-step" mode (steps of several units as on a mechanical metronome). Choose the mode that you prefer.
Set the Tempo with the Tap Function
The TM-40's Tap Tempo function lets you detect and set the desired tempo simply by pressing the Metronome mode START/STOP button at the desired timing in a range of 40—208 bpm. This makes it easy when practicing to a song that you don't know the tempo of, such as a recording on CD.
With the Memory Backup feature, the Korg TM-40 remembers your Tempo, Beat, Calibration, and Reference Pitch settings even when powered-off.
Auto Power Off
After 20 minutes of no use, the Korg TM-40 Tuner Metronome will automatically turn off to extend battery life.

The tuner works great. My guitar was in tune but not as in tune as after using this tuner. And the metronome also works great. I would recommend this product.
The tuner itself is a little twitchy and I really don't understand what the calibration is for (does the tuner need to be tuned?), and the tone sound it projects is annoying, so tune to the needle display - that works great. The metronome works better than I imagined. Using a miniature connector cable and one 1/4 inch adapter, I plug it into my amp and play along with. I never realized how much out of sync I was without a drummer, LOL! I found the 120 BPM to work best for me. It even does accents (high first beat, 3 low beats, repeat)! Very good tuner, especially for the money.
This is a great buy for the price. I use the metronome to practice my drums and the tuner to tune my guitar. I like that it has several different types of rhythms so I can practice many different styles. I like that I can plug in a headphone so I can isolate and hear the metronome beats. Plus, no one else has to hear the "tick tock" when I'm beating on my practice pad.
Straight out of the box, I pull the protective strip off of the battery and in with in seconds my guitar was IN TUNE! Very simple and easy to use. The metronome worked well! All is GOOD. Tune and Time.
This is my first experience with a metronome and i must say I am very impressed. This unit delivers its promise and goes beyond expectations. I have played for about 15 years and felt my timing was pretty good, well a metronome brings out some inaccuracies that I completly did not expect. Practice time is now even more productive and the improvements are showing. And the accuracy of the tuner is incredible. The tuner is so accurate and sensitive that it displayed every note I was playing throughout the entire A Dorian scale and all seven modes, this blew me away. This was a fantastic purchase and I highly recommend this as a must have practice tool.
This tuner/metronome works great and it's well worth the money. Just put the batteries (they are included) in and turn it on, and it's ready to go. What I like best about it is that the internal mic works so well. I prefer to use the mic instead of plugging my guitar into the tuner, but either way works just fine. I am very satisfied with this purchase and look forward to purchasing more Korg products in the future.
This is an amazing and affordable tuner/metronome. It is easy to use because both the tuner and metronome have their own on button. The settings are easy to understand. It is a very good product for students because of its price and quality. The tuner works very well with low pitches. The only problem I found with it was that the metronome beat cannot be played loud enough to be heard in a group setting.
I've had this for about 5 years and it hasn't given me a single problem. It works great with the mic or the 1/4 jack. But what I really like about it is the metronome it comes in very handy for practicing and drilling etc... the metronome has just about all the settings you would want to have-tempo-beat-1/8-1/16 etc.... Great product it's lasted the years and even been thrown around a bit-misplaced a couple of times(very glad I always found it) If need be I would buy another one
This is probably the perfect tuner that anybody could be looking for. The price is absolutely unbeatable, and the abilities are outstanding. Detecting a full piano range is perfect, and the device's versatility is very useful for both guitars and basses. A great tuner for practicing and getting very nicely in tune.
I bought this tuner three years ago for my violin practice. It is very precise (which is good for violin), and has lasted a long time on the original battery. I use it daily for tuning my guitar and violin, and it just started to give me the low battery warning. It's handy having the tuner/metronome in one. Great buy, great product!
