Overview

The PX5D multi effect processor joins Korg's respected PANDORA series, famous for packing high-quality sounds and ease of use into a pocket size unit. Easy to enjoy anywhere and anytime. The PX5D provides a total of 180 realistic and wide-ranging effects created using Korg's world-acclaimed, proprietary "REMS" modeling technology. Included are simulations that recreate classic vintage and modern, high-gain amps, as well as effects ranging from the familiar to the unique. Numerous effects designed specifically for bass are also included, making the PX5D a great choice not only for the guitarist but for the bassist as well. In a first for the PANDORA series, a USB-MIDI/USB audio interface is also provided, allowing you to use the PX5D with your computer to transfer audio data or record into your DAW software. There's also dedicated editor/librarian software that lets you edit and manage programs from your computer. All the classic features you have come expect from the PANDORA are also present, to help the guitarist or bassist practice, perform and record.

An amazing 180 modeling effects powered by "REMS" technology

Korg's proprietary "REMS" modeling technology, acclaimed by musicians around the world, is used to power the PANDORA's broad variety of realistic effects. These effects include models of various guitar amps and bass amps, as well as both standard effects and fresh new effects found only on the PANDORA.

Numerous guitar/bass amp modeling effects and synth effects

The PX5D provides faithfully modeled simulations of the vintage and high-end amps sought after by guitarists and bassists. Eighteen types for guitar and ten types for bass perfectly capture the warm and rich resonance of a tube amp. Realistically reproduced models of many different cabinets and speakers are also provided, offering differences in speaker size and cabinet structure for superb presence and depth. You can even combine cabinets and speakers freely with any amp models, letting you experience combinations not possible on the original units themselves. There are also synth effects that let you create unique and fresh new sounds, with three choices each for guitar and bass.
A great selection of effects with quality that rivals dedicated processor units

The PX5D gives you a wide selection of effects, ranging from simulations of hard-to-find vintage units to fresh new sounds original to the PANDORA series. These include, pickup modeling, to give your instrument a single-coil or dual-coil sound; an intelligent pitch shifter, letting you automatically add harmonies to your performance; a talk effect that makes your guitar seem to speak; a slow attack effect to simulate a violin or cello; a feedback effect that allows feedback performance techniques normally achievable only at high volumes; a rotary speaker effect that varies the speed according to your picking or fingering dynamics; a fretless bass effect that simulates that instrument's distinctive sound; and many others.

A total of 200 effect programs: 100 user and 100 preset

You can use up to seven "REMS" modeling effects simultaneously in each program, giving you nearly limitless sonic variation. The one hundred preset programs allow you to choose from different playing techniques and styles; sounds of every era; and sounds that simulate the characteristic tones of famous artists. You can also edit your own sounds and store them in one hundred user program locations. Together with the preset programs, this gives you immediate access to a total of two hundred programs. Favorite programs can be assigned to four program memory buttons for one-touch access, letting you smoothly change programs in an instant.

USB audio interface functionality makes the PX5D a powerful recording tool

A built-in USB audio interface is provided to transfer audio data between the PX5D and your computer via USB. This ensures that the amazing "REMS" modeling sound is recorded into your DAW software with no loss of quality.

PC software for editing programs, managing libraries, and creating chains

Dedicated editor/librarian software is provided via download, allowing you to edit and manage programs on your computer. Simply connect the PX5D to your computer via USB”no complicated settings are necessary. Since effect parameters and other settings will be visible at a glance, editing the PX5D's enormous complement of effects becomes quick and easy. You can save or rearrange programs, create libraries of programs for specific purposes, and exchange programs with other users, further extending the potential of the PX5D.

Phrase Trainer and many other valuable functions for practicing and jamming

The PXD5D allows you to record up to eighty seconds of sound from an external audio source such as a CD, MD, or MP3, and then play it back as a loop at a different speed, without affecting the pitch. This is a great way to practice difficult passages or learn complex phrases. You can also record your own accompaniment, along with the built-in rhythm and bass patterns, then play it back while you practice playing a lead”the possibilities are limited only by your imagination. A Key Transpose function lets you change the pitch of the incoming audio source by as much as one octave upward or downward, and a Bass Canceller function cancels the bass sound so that you can enjoy "minus-one" playing.

A total of 744 different rhythm & bass patterns and variations that cover a broad range of styles

Rock, jazz, funk, blues, country, and many other styles are covered by 128 rhythm and bass patterns. In addition, variations are provided for each rhythm and bass pattern, resulting in a total of 744 different patterns to choose from. Specify the bass key and you can practice performing any style of music with amazingly authentic rhythm and bass lines. This is a great way to improve your picking, sense of rhythm, and familiarity with scales. You can also create twenty chains, with each chain connecting up to sixteen different rhythm patterns. And of course you can also use the effect programs at the same time.

Foot switch jack allows hands-free control

A foot switch jack lets you control the PX5D's rich array of functionality without interrupting your performance. Connect the included foot switch jack cable to the PX5D, and you'll be able to connect two foot switches (not included) and use them to change programs or start/stop Phrase Trainer recording or playback.

Interface designed for intuitive operation and excellent visibility

In spite of its compact design, the PX5D features a unique interface that delivers analog-style operation and visibility just like a conventional amp or effect processor. The dials that control the gain or tone of the amp modeling offer instant visual indication of each control's setting while you edit. There's also a tap button that lets you control the delay time, and a value encoder for adjusting parameter values or the master level, all allowing intuitive operation for easy sound creation. Functions are instantly recognizable as icons in the LCD screen. To top it off, the display is backlit for good visibility and smooth operation even on dimly lit stages.

Many support functions, including a tuner

In addition to high-quality sound, the PANDORA series is also known for a broad range of extras that support guitarists and bass players. A built-in tuner lets you tune easily, and includes a mute function, so you can tune silently on stage. An optimal audio signal can be sent to any connection destination”headphones, mixer, MTR, or guitar amp”to ensure the highest quality sound in every situation. Power can be supplied by an AC adapter, by batteries, or via the USB connection.

This thing is great. I wanted a small practice amp to take with me on the road and this worked out perfect. First its really small. I didn't realize how small until I actually got it. Right out of the box it's easy to use. On board editing is basic and easy as well. If you hook it up to your computer you have more control over the settings. I did have a lot of trouble installing the drivers and Korg has zero tech support. I finally got it to work though. Its got the standard effects plus a few really nice guitar synth stuff. The phrase trainer is fun for practice. I'm using Reaper and Cakewalk to record with it, at first it was really noisy but I switched usb ports and it fixed the problem, nice and quiet. I recommend this for practice and recording. I guess you could use it live but you would have to set up the banks in order of your songs. The footswitch for it will only go up and down through the banks. I gave this a 4 star rating because of the lack of support form Korg other than that buy one, its worth it.

I recieved the PX5D last week and is somewhat disappointed with this unit. I've hooked this up through an amp, to my computer, to a flat EQ-headphone and through a powered computer speaker, the amp modeling is muddy and no amount of tweaking can reduce the muddiness. The cab simulation is hollow. They should have used the "Drive" (ex: tube, valve, hotbox, scooped and fuzz) and Cab feature of the PX2 instead of the "amp modeling" (UK mdn, US mdn) and the "improved cab" on the PX5D. The PX2 sounded a lot better than the newer Pandora models. If you accidentally press the left and right toggle, you might accidentally edit your own patch. That's a no-no. The only plus for the PX5D are the USB connection and the A to D buttons to access my own sound patches.

This did not come with the Ableton Live software. I guess they are no longer offering that after the PX5D was first launched.

The PX5D has more bells and whistle, but tone-wise, I would still go back to my trusty old Pandora PX2.

  • Same As Px4 Except Rhythm

Comments about Korg Pandora PX5D Guitar Multi Effects Processor:

I bought one of these to replace my PX4 that I have had forever. I am glad that the PX5D vastly improved the rhythm samples so I have more variety to play my exercises against. Other than that, it was basically the same as the PX4. One thing is that the screen is facing the wrong way. I should be able to read it from the side where I plug everything in. As it is, I have to turn it around to change settings. In the end I did reconsider returning because it isn't much different than the PX4 (90%), but decided to keep it for the rhythms.

Comments about Korg Pandora PX5D Guitar Multi Effects Processor:

bought this for a drum machine to practice to. it sounds really good hooked up into my firewire interface coming out Yamaha monitors. the drum and bass simulations sound good for my use. I tried this trough my amp ,for guitar effects, and it sounded terrible. tried it through the effects loop and it sounded terrible. it may sound good from guitar to interface through monitors for guitar effects. haven't tried that. so beware and demo this somewhere before you buy. all I can say is my use for this is the drum machine and bass simulation. these sound real good. I am happy with how they sound. it was worth the money just to have a good sounding beat to practice guitar lead to. I would recommend it.

Comments about Korg Pandora PX5D Guitar Multi Effects Processor:

I am a novice at best, so it has way more than what I would have need for. I use this to practice my bass playing at home. I like the following:

-a plethora of rhythmic options to choose from
-though the loop is short, the phrase trainer is really why I made the purchase for those hard to catch riffs, scales and patterns
-unit more solid than the PXB's of the past in my opinion and I purchased the 4.5v adapter vs. battery use.

It did not come with the CD ROM, so I will have to figure out how to download the material for use with my laptop. Overall very happy with my purchase, earlier than expected prompt delivery, and a great sale price!

        Great practice tool

        By Tom Cox

Comments about Korg Pandora PX5D Guitar Multi Effects Processor:

A friend of mine in China whom I jam, learn from and practice with told me about this device. He saw it on the internet explained all of the features to me. He jokingly suggested that when I return to the USA, that I should check-it-out. I did, and I purchased one at my local Guitar Center. I must say, I am delighted with it. I can put on some headphones, select the music style I am in the mood to play and entertain myself for hours. It's alot of fun! It also sounds great thru my amp. Since I live 80% on the time in China, having this operate on AA batteries is also a big plus. Honestly, I would have given it a 5 rating (because I am that pleased with it) except the manual is not clear or easy to understand. It has probably taken me a couple of hours of trial and error to get as proficient as I am using the features I most enjoy. But don't let this discourage you from purchasing one, I have trouble hooking-up a DVD player.

Comments about Korg Pandora PX5D Guitar Multi Effects Processor:

Hi. Long time listener; first time caller... I had myself a PX 3. Very cool. Got lost, so I bought a PX 5. Newer is better? PX 5 sucks. Really. Doesn't have the variety of distortions and ease of use that the PX 3 had. Less versatile. Pain in the butt to navigate compared to the PX 3. The CD Rom the manual keeps referring too.... it's online now and you have to download it. If you use Linux software, it's not compatible. I'm just gonna find a used PX 3. Suggest you do the same.

Solid guitar amp/fx modeler, beat line 6 pedals/portable

        By Wish4moretime

        from USA

Comments about Korg Pandora PX5D Guitar Multi Effects Processor:

I am on the road lots and I've tried lots of these portable units, expensive and cheap. I think the PX5D is the best unit because it sounds better than Line 6, has more practice features, has a great mix of I/O that supports most portable applications. I highly recommend it. If you want the best sound then I'd recommend a high quality USB audio interface and PC amp and fx simulation software. Tapping the huge processing power of a laptop will be the most HiFi portable audio solution. If however you want to avoid the PC and narrow your focus to the 6 strings, some tab and maybe an ipod, The PX5D is a great solution.
I own this unit as well at the line Pocket pod, JM-Looper, and gearbox tone direct from Line 6. I have taken all 4 on road trips for practicing and jamming. The Pandora PX5D is the best unit of all of these for practicing and jamming with friends, and is the most versatile.

The preset tones are very good, and show the capability of the unit. You can get into the unit and edit tones, or use the PC software to edit. I usually just use the unit itself. The modulation fx include volume swell, multitap delay, wah, various reverbs and pitch shifting. If you want to create sophisticated sounds these are really important fx. Of course these are not Lexicon/DAW quality, but they are satisfying to practice with. The Line 6 units do not have volume swell, multitap delay, wah, and pitch shifting. Line 6 are extremely limited in the fx supported and not satisfying. Distortion and amp modelling on the PX5D and pocket pod are roughly equivalent in quality, the JM4 and Directbox use the same algorithms are better sounding than the PX5D, however I can get what I need tonally out of the PX5D for practice and jamming applications.

The unit has a very limited sequencer that can play internal beats and song loops. This is useful for practicing. The "song" feature is mostly a gimmick, it is very limited. The unit does support some limited download of midi sequences, however I have not tried it. Better to fire up the laptop for this sort of thing.
The unit is the size of an old school cassette walkman. It is light and build quality is very good, connectors are solid. The unit runs on 2 AA batteries and they last quite a long time.

The unit has USB and can send and receive audio to any PC. It also has basic software for editing settings on the PC and downloading the changes. The (Mac) software is basic, it works, but hasn't really been that useful for me. Its has defects that Korg really should fix.

A surprising limitation is finding a good spot for it when jamming. A belt clip like the Rockman would be useful.

Quality issues with my Line 6 gear:

I tried to take the JM-Looper on the road, but its power supply sucks, can't handle 240V, and I've sent it in 3x for repairs or replacement because of power related issues. The floor pedal looks tough on the outside, it's flaky on the inside.

The pocket pod chews through batteries, has very limited fx, and no sequencing sampling, or rhythm features. The tone is OK, but the interface is confusing, and USB doesn't send audio to PC.

Tone direct is a good USB audio interface for the guitar, Plus it is useless without the laptop. It is REALLY important that I can just plugin, turn it on, dial in a tone and play. When I boot the PC it distracts me from playing, I can fall into work mode.

        Great and handy practice tool

        By Anonymous

        from Undisclosed

Comments about Korg Pandora PX5D Guitar Multi Effects Processor:

I use this with my bass guitar to practice at home. It's got plenty of options to play with to get a nice sounding effect. I use the stock drum patterns to jam along with to come up with some new ideas and practice my timing. The aux in feature is great as I can loop in music and learn songs. The USB is GREAT as it lets you change patches with the downloadable software but the best part is that the unit is powered via the USB source so you don't eat up the battery life. However, you do get a little extra computer noise coming through the unit and it does sound best disconnected from the PC.

        Don't Forget The Extended Warranty!

        By Gunnar

        from Seattle, WA

Comments about Korg Pandora PX5D Guitar Multi Effects Processor:

If the PX5D hadn't quit working less than 2 months after the warranty expired, 5 stars wouldn't be enough! It was a very nice ride, and if the product was made to last for longer than what it did, I would have NO complaints. One evening when I hooked the PX5D to the PC's USB port, I started smelling the tell-tale sign of fried electronics, which signaled the end of the PX5D's useful life. I still miss it!
