The sound of the inimitable MS-20 is now available to all with the new MS-20 Mini. The same engineers who developed the original MS-20 have perfectly reproduced its circuitry and fit it into a body 86% of the original size. The MS-20 mini will amaze with its absolutely authentic, analog synth sound.

The MS-20 distinguished itself at its debut through its gripping lead tones, its fat and juicy basses, and its its warm strings and pads. It was a two oscillator synth with two VCFs. two VCAs. sample and hold, a noise generator and many other tweakable components. The entire array has been designed by the fussiest design team imaginable--the same people who made the MS-20 in the first place. If you are a fan of analog synthesis in general and of the MS-20 in particular, this is a synth you need to check out.

Features
  • Overseen by the engineers of the original MS-20
  • Self-oscillating high-pass/low-pass filters with distinctive distortion
  • External signal processor (ESP)
  • Extremely flexible patching system

Comments about Korg MS20 Mini Analog Monophonic Synth:

I bought the MS20K (the assemble-it-yourself kit) which has 1/4" jacks but functions exactly the same. For a while I was a bit confused about its role in my studio - it doesn't sound like a Minimoog, it is monophonic and neither the semi-modular patch bay nor the instruction manual initially seemed intuitive. But that was before I discovered its secret:

Any audio can become a control voltage source to drive modulation. The owner's manual barely touches on this but a little more digging reveals that, for instance, a drum beat can drive oscillator pitch, filter cutoff or amp level. This changes everything: the MS20 is basically a one-note squelchy, highly tweakable but automatic groove-noise generator. This puts the MS20 in its own league since audio sources are unlimited and become completely unrecognizable. I absolutely LOVE this device!!!

    Fun, Great-Sounding Synth

Comments about Korg MS20 Mini Analog Monophonic Synth:

After a two-month backorder wait, I finally received my MS-20 Mini... and it was definitely worth the wait. Although I wish the wait would have been shorter, this synth offers everything you would expect from a classic analog synth: analog warmth, analog unpredictability (to an extent), squelchy resonance, and with the semi-modular nature of the synth, expandability that allows you to create tones that the self-contained circuitry would otherwise not allow. Beautiful tone, mean sounding filters, patching flexibility... this thing is just amazing. Thinking about getting it? What are you waiting for? Do it! Do it now!

Comments about Korg MS20 Mini Analog Monophonic Synth:

If your looking for the big, dirty analog sound, look no further. This unit is very capable of synthesizing anything from percussion to pads to deep sub bass.
My only complaint would be better control of a faint hiss during sound design.
It also looks very impressive, the knobs and keys feel solid and smooth, and the patch bay is sweet!

      Excellent for the price

Comments about Korg MS20 Mini Analog Monophonic Synth:

As an owner of a ton of Korg gear, including an original MS20, I have to commend Korg on coming out with a great reissue. While this doesn't have some of the control features of other similarly priced monophonics out there (Minibrute, BSII, etc.) it does fulfill a much needed niche - a true semi-modular (semi-modular because it will work just fine without any patch points engaged, the patch point just provide you with a ton of additional routing options) synth that people can dig into without breaking their back, price-wise. As a standalone product, it's very cool and the obvious next step in Korg's true analog strategy that began with the monotron and is continuing to blossom. It sounds very good and is stable. There've already been a ton of comparisons online between the original MS20 and this reissue, but, that said, even original MS20's differed in their tonal quality depending on if you bought an early or later unit. As a professional, I am not a fan of mini-keys, though these are not as bad as other mini korg products where the key is not only thinner but also much shorter in length. I also prefer the original 1/4" patch points, but the 1/8"'s make sense on a unit of this size. Overall, for the price, a winner.

Comments about Korg MS20 Mini Analog Monophonic Synth:

Great little character-laden synth is fun to play and sounds very good and, most importantly...very musical. The secret to thick, awesome bass lies in the filters: I won't give away my secrets here, though.

Comments about Korg MS20 Mini Analog Monophonic Synth:

Really can't say anything bad about this synth. GOOD however - there is much good here! This will get you away from presets and teach you a lot about synthesis. Great for sounds design too - super nice with a little delay and reverb. This really is a reincarnation of a 1978 synth (with mini too - notes only tho). Filters are awesome. Check out the Marc Doty vids on youtube for a nice exhaustive walk-thru MS-20 land . . .

Comments about Korg MS20 Mini Analog Monophonic Synth:

I was very excited about this synth. I've finally received it today and unfortunately am already thinking about returning it. Right out of the box, after powering it on and running the signal out to my speakers, even with both VCOs down all the way and no patching done, there is a good deal of line noise while pressing keys. This seems common as many other users are complaining of this as well. To me, it isn't bad enough to return it based on that alone but...

I also possibly have a defective unit as I cannot get VCO1 in tune. VCO2 tunes fine and sounds fantastic but VCO1's scale/intonation is inconsistent (octaves are off, gets really drastic 2 octaves apart). Basically, anything above note A2 is immediately almost off by a half step and gets slightly more off going up. Anything below note A2 drastically gets off by almost over a whole step. This is with the master tune and pitch for VCO2 set to 12 o'clock (0) and referencing a tuner with VCO2. Any advice?
