Overview

The KAOSSILATOR PRO is a supercharged version of KORG's palm-sized KAOSSILATOR, reborn as a powerful track-making tool, then loaded with live performance power.

As a trailblazer among instrumental gadgets that allow anyone to easily create melodies and phrases, KORG's KAOSSILATOR gained a strong and dedicated user base, even among those without any performing experience and today, the KORG KAOSSILATOR touchpad synthesizer continues to be enormously popular. Retaining these revolutionary features, while adding a wide variety of new ones as well, is the KAOSSILATOR PRO. With 200 sound programs, an Electribe-inspired gate arpeggiator, and 4 loop recording banks that can record external audio sources, the KORG KAOSSILATOR PRO is packed with features that make it ideal for both live performances and premium productions. In addition, USB connectivity to your computer and SD card memory storage allow the KORG KAOSSILATOR PRO to be used not just for improvised performances, but also as a superbly intuitive, track-making, music-production tool.

Intuitive X-Y touchpad:
Using the KORG synth's touchpad is highly intuitive: simply rub, stroke, or tap it to instantly create complex phrases with a single finger. Responding instantly to these gestures, the KORG KAOSSILATOR PRO synthesizer creates spontaneous changes that were difficult to produce on synthesizers of the past. Horizontal motions control the pitch, while the vertical axis can control tone parameters such as cutoff, feedback, or modulation depth. This makes it easy for anyone to create entirely original sounds and musical phrases.

200 exciting programs:
KORG's synthesizer technology, which is acclaimed by top musicians around the world, has been carefully distilled into the KAOSSILATOR PRO. The touchpad synth's versatile array of pro-level sounds includes synths, drums, FX, and other instruments. These sounds complement all styles of electronic and dance music including: techno, house, breaks, hip-hop, R&B, reggae, and electronic. The KORG synthesizer also has numerous acoustic instruments such as piano, trumpet, and guitar that provide a further boost to your expressive resources. You can assign your favorite programs to 8 Program Memory buttons for instant recall, ensuring that your live performances will sound smooth.

Extensively enhanced drum sounds:
Rhythm can be the most important element when creating a phrase. In addition to the modeling synthesis borrowed from the original KAOSSILATOR, the KAOSSILATOR PRO synth provides a PCM sound generator as well, offering even more realistic drum sounds arranged in kits across the X/Y pad. There are 20 one-shot sounds for kick, snare, hi-hat, and more, as well as 25 rhythm loop patterns to spark your creativity.

Vocoder programs for creative audio effects:
The KAOSSILATOR PRO features a mic input jack and 15 types of vocoder programs, making it easy to achieve unique sound effects, create robot voices, and more.

31 scales for musical expressiveness:
The 31e scale types cover a range from chromatic scales to major, minor, blues, and beyond. By specifying a scale and key, you can use a single finger to play perfect melodies and phrases that would be difficult to play even on a keyboard. The synth also gives you special scales such as Spanish, Ryukyu, and Raga, letting you play phrases that have a distinctive flavor. Another boost in expressive power is provided by the KORG synth's Note Range function, which lets you specify the range of pitches available on the touchpad from a single octave up to 8 octaves.

Gate arpeggiator provides tightly sync'ed grooves:
Inspired by KORG's EMX-1 and ESX-1 Electribes, the KORG KAOSSILATOR PRO's gate arpeggiator allows you to play a pattern of sounds that are always in sync with the tempo, generating phrases that defy imagination. The KAOSSILATOR PRO's slider can control the gate time or gate speed, allowing even more complex phrases to be produced. Tempos can be set manually or set on the fly using the Tap Tempo function.

Loop recording with unlimited overdubbing:
Loop Recording can be set for up to 4 measures/16 beats. Your KORG KAOSSILATOR PRO musical performances can be recorded into one of the Loop Recorder Banks. By adding additional sounds one at a time (overdubbing), you can create amazing loop phrases by repeating the cycle of selecting a sound, playing a phrase, and recording the sound over and over again.

4 loop recording banks allow DJ-style performances:
The KORG KAOSSILATOR PRO provides 4 Loop Recording Banks. These banks can be combined for virtually infinite performance possibilities. Each of the four loop banks can host infinite overdubs. In addition, each bank can be muted or unmuted, its volume adjusted, and its loop length changed, making dynamic live performances easy for anyone. An unneeded loop can be erased during playback and a new one recorded so there's no need to stop the performance.

Loop recording using an external source:
The KORG KAOSSILATOR PRO provides line inputs and a mic input, allowing for loop recording using an external audio source. This makes it easy to add a rap, vocal, or audio from an external device to any loop phrase created on the KAOSSILATOR PRO synthesizer.

USB + MIDI provides versatility and compatibility:
The KAOSSILATOR PRO touchpad synth offers standard MIDI IN/OUT connectors. In addition, the USB connector lets you use your computer to back up the loop recording data, or even drop loops into your favorite DAW. The KAOSSILATOR PRO can also control your software applications or an external MIDI device. The KORG KAOSSILATOR PRO can send or receive MIDI clock.

Convenient SD card data storage:
The KORG KAOSSILATOR PRO synthesizer provides an SD card slot for storing loop data and user settings such as program memories. Favorite phrases can be saved to build up a collection of loop data that will inspire your musical arrangements. SD card storage also allows you to create the same show with the same loops, night after night. You can also swap loops with other KAOSSILATOR PRO users, or use your data in multiple units. (Note: Not compatible with SDHC cards and SDXC cards.)

Dedicated editor/librarian software:
KORG KAOSSILATOR PRO Editor is a dedicated software program for managing your recorded loop data, as well as a MIDI assignment editor function that lets you transform the KAOSSILATOR PRO into a powerful MIDI controller that's set up just the way you want. KAOSSILATOR PRO Editor can be downloaded free of charge from the KORG website. (Note: Runs on Microsoft Windows XP (SP3 or later)/Vista (SP2 or later)/7 and on MAC OS X 10.4 or later.)

...and one giant leap for the Kaoss series! This amazing machine is a huge step up from the original Kaossilator, but still retains the spontaneity that made the original so much fun. Sure, the KO-1 was a very powerful music maker, but it always looked like a toy, and was very limited by the lack of a saving function and MIDI control. The Kpro fixes all of these problems, and then some. It has a very solid-feeling metal construction like the KP3, and all the buttons veel very solid. This thing is definitely going to hold up to some on-the-road abuse. It's simply a blast to use, and the availability of four different loop banks is a huge plus and allows for much more flexible performances. Plus, the ability to record external audio changes everything, allowing you to remix and add on to your favourite KP3-style. my only gripes are that the SD card loading and saving is pitifully slow, taking a full 40 seconds to load a whole set up (loading individual loops is faster), and the gate Arp patterns are no longer available, having been replaced with a gate speed/gate time slider. The slider does force you to be more creative and does kind of go along with the "pro" title in that it requires a bit more skill to use than just setting a pattern and holding your finger on the pad. Some others have noted a problem with MIDI clock synching, but I haven't used this feature yet, so I can't comment on it. All in all, this is a great product for both studio use and live performing, though some people may leave the dancefloor if there's 40 seconds of dead silence while you load up your next set of loops. I can see this unit holding up to quite a bit of road abuse, and it's looks will definitely get more respect than yellow plastic and silver-painted metal. I highly recommend the Kaossilator Pro to anyone with deep enough pockets and a desire to make music in a brand-new way.

First Kaossilator was/is an awesome little box. This one was billed as 4 of those in 1. It really doesn't retain the full functionality of even a single Kaossilator, due to basic feature omissions. No undo(!): I, like many people voicing the same concern on discussion boards, don't know how to use a Kaossilator without resort to the undo function. It was core to my workflow. The story with the Pro version is that "undo is not needed, given 4 independent tracks". Not so. On the more powerful original single track Kaossilator, you could carefully build up 10 layers of different instruments, or more. Without undo, on the Pro version, it can be a problem to go beyond 4 layers, because if you make a mistake on the 2nd layer on any of the 4 tracks, once you've filled them all, you don't have undo, so your mistake will ruin the original bit you've already laid down on that track. Nothing is safe, so you can't build up complexity. You can get around this by constantly saving to the card, but that is a cumbersome workaround. Think of it this way: would you like to write a letter in your word processor without the use of an undo key?: If you make a mistake, you'll have to start typing all the way from the beginning. Make another mistake and then start all over again. It makes no sense to have no undo in a digital device such as this. No sense. No arpeggiator(!): How could they remove the arpeggiator? The original Kaossilator arpeggiator is awesome. Simple, but awesome, and an essential complement to the other music making elements. It was an integral part of the original elegant design. The current so called "arpeggiator" has no patterns - it is just on/off, at variable speed. This is pathetically less useful, and not necessarily honest to call it an "arpeggiator". While they've added some nice features, these are in general not well integrated. Would be nice if they included instructions with the unit that cover all the features. The included thin pamphlet says nothing about the mic input, the vocoder, and various other possibly interesting functions. Korg rushed this out, and it shows. Somewhere there is a Korg product manager who needs to be fired, or a manager who said "I don't care if it is not ready to ship, we're shipping it anyway!". This box is still fun to use, because it has fully 50% of the potential of a real Kaossilator, and it includes a nicer touch pad, and some handy buttons. But, sadly, it should be 500% of a Kaossilator, not 50%, and the missing features are often more of a pain than the pleasure of the remaining nice features.

Cool but not mind-blowing

By alex koleber

from Portland, OR

Comments about Korg KAOSSILATOR PRO - Dynamic Phrase Synth/Loop Recorder:

Honestly, I was expecting more after watching youtube videos of people using this. Granted, I need to spend more time with it but after a few weeks, I've found a few serious limitations. First, the pros: very simple to use as far as creating unique sounds. Tons of built in sounds. You can really lose track of time making your own songs. The loop function is both a pro and a con. On the one hand, it's super cool to make your own loops and the fact that you can create 4 individual loops is pretty great. However, without the loop feature, this unit would be pretty lame (unless you have an external digital recorder). My main issue is that you cannot edit individual layers. So say you have a drum beat, bass groove, and some synth lead parts all on one loop bank and you want to add sound effects or percussion. You have to record them live and if you make a mistake, you have to erase the whole loop and start over rather than just delete the layer with the error. Also, I take issue with the bass capabilities. Trying to create bass lines on an XY pad is much less intuitive than a bass guitar or keyboard. Also, sometimes a single point on the XY pad will produce a different note when pushed repeatedly. So if you want 4 G notes and you push the corresponding point on the pad 4 times, sometimes 1 of the 4 notes will be different. Super frustrating. It's cool for techno/house/dj/dance music but beyond that, kinda limited. I use it mostly for adding layers to existing tracks with real drums, bass, and guitar and for that purpose, it's super rad. Wait for a good price on a used one, I wouldn't pay full price. Get this to add to an existing set up for live/studio but don't expect it to be an all-in-one unit.

I was in love with her until I got to know her

Comments about Korg KAOSSILATOR PRO - Dynamic Phrase Synth/Loop Recorder:

This didnt work for me but it may still be perfect for your style or use best bet fine a store that hase it demoed and play with it. so i thought i was getting a remarkable tool for creating music live as well as in my D.A.W but i found this is talked up a lot more then it is worth. its features are great but its function is less the current with technology especially for the price of $460 for that price seriously buy a ipad or something and get a synthesizer app. it only works in 16 beat riffs so nothing too complicated can be preformed. when you save or load anything besides midi setting prepare to sit there for a Minute. don't forget there is no internal memory so you Need a memory card 2GB max no exceptions. now i wont blame the unit on this because it may be a user error but i could not use a midi controller with the devise meaning since i was having a hard time hitting the keys precisely in the touch screen which are separated by literally Centimeters when playing in the standard setting i tried to do more complicated things with the midi key board but no luck and even if i could get a midi key board to work the device only allows you to hit one key at a time. over all they were ambitious but maybe technology was clanging too fast for this device to stay relevant.

Very Good But It Has A Long Way To Go

By Tristan Arostegui

from San Francisco, CA

Comments about Korg KAOSSILATOR PRO - Dynamic Phrase Synth/Loop Recorder:

Unpacking my Kaossilator Pro, I was very excited and I loved it immediately. The XY Touchpad is truly unique to Korg and the Kaoss series. It gives users an easy way to manipulate all types of sounds. The build of the Kaossilator Pro is very good. It is built with a metal body that looks very heavy is feel quite strong. This product has never broken down or crashed on me and it is very reliable. The preset sounds on it were very diverse and very good quality sounds. It was very easy to use once you read through the manual. The different keys and scales made it even more fun. Also, the 4 individual loop banks made the experience very different from the the original Kaossilator. After using for a while I started to want more sounds. The 200 that come with it seem like a lot at first, but you can get through them pretty quickly. If Korg were to add customizable sounds and beats it would greatly enhance the experience of a dedicated daily user. Another problem with the Kaossilator Pro is the compliated Midi control. The Midi on the Kaossilator Pro is CC, which is uncommon, meaning you have to map each one. It is not impossible, but it is difficult, especially for inexperienced users. Also, changing the BPM changes the pitch, which makes it hard to speed up and slow down tracks while playing along with them. Overall, I wouldrecommend the Kaossilator Pro to anyone who would take the time to really take advantage of the powerful music tool and is willing to pay $400 for it. I also can't way to see what Korg will do for the nest installment in the Kaossilator series. Ease of use:9/10 Sound quality:10/10 Durability:9.5/10 Sound Variety:6.5/10 Price:8/10 Compatabilty with other devices:6.5/10 Overall:8/10

Great with a few issues.

By Christopher

from salt lake city utah

Comments about Korg KAOSSILATOR PRO - Dynamic Phrase Synth/Loop Recorder:

As for the positive attributes, I echo what has already been said. I would have liked a few things to be changed. First, is the ARP, It does not function when being used as a MIDI Controller and the switch location for the gate vs time is inconvienent. You cannot activate/deactivate loops while playing anything on the grid, you have to break contact from the grid temporarally to activate or deactivate a loop. It would be nice if you could switch the loop function from recorded waveform to recorded midi note values so BPM changes could be made without changing pitch of recorded samples. Overall the Pro is a step in the right direction, but korg should have called it the kaossilator improved, and reserved pro for a later generation. Korg should look at how the DS-10 software on the nintendo DS for where to go with this product line.

Comments about Korg KAOSSILATOR PRO - Dynamic Phrase Synth/Loop Recorder:

the kkpro gives you so many options in one little package. synths, baslines, drum hits, drum loops vocoder and audio effects, and the possiblity to loop and stack as many loops as you want. i love making beats on my computer and this thing is so tight for making strong loops for any genre. the arpegiator is sweet. buy this thing you will not regret is also get a microphone and you will have alot of fun with looping. you can also use it as a midi controller for your computer and you can edit a lot of things in the kkpro itself and you can save on to an sd card! its pretty much amazing the only thing i dont like is i wish it was battery powered thats it lol.

I have been waiting all my life

By Cliff Yankovich

from Lowell, MI

Comments about Korg KAOSSILATOR PRO - Dynamic Phrase Synth/Loop Recorder:

What a fantastic instrument for 400 bux. I unboxed it about 5 hours ago and my life has changed. This is EXACTLY what I have been waiting for...lay down a rhythm track...slap some bass on...chime in with some chords...do a little funky lead line. Now that the four loops are full, hook up a mic and sing (or blow your harp) through it with the vocoder effects. At 52, I am glad I have lived long enough to experience something like this. Saw my first Moog onstage when I was in elementary school and it took up 20 feet and took 3 people to operate it - now WE can do so, so much more with something that hides in a backpack. Lordy lordy I am a HAPPY man.
