Overview

The KAOSSILATOR Dynamic Phrase Synthesizer is a pocket-sized musical instrument that matches a KAOSS touchpad interface with 100 of KORG's world-renowned synth sounds and innovative performance features. You can instantly play musical phrases simply by tapping or sliding your finger across the KAOSSILATOR's touchpad”no previous skills required.

The KAOSSILATOR liberates synthesizer sounds from the keyboard. It gives keyboardists, guitarists, and DJs a convenient way to add fresh new elements to band performances or to DJ sets. Even untrained music enthusiasts can enjoy an entirely new level of musical involvement and expression.

Thanks to its ultracompact size, battery operation, and hooks for attaching a strap, the KAOSSILATOR makes it easy for you to start creating music whenever and wherever inspiration strikes you.

Packed with powerful synth sounds, sound effects, and drum sounds
KAOSSILATOR comes packed with 100 powerful sound programs that combine KORG's legendary modeling synthesizer engine with the effects from the KAOSS PAD series”perfect for any musical genre. The horizontal axis is assigned to note/pitch, while the vertical axis is assigned to parameters such as: cutoff, feedback, or modulation depth, to give you a wide range of performance possibilities. In addition to classic synthesizer sounds like leads, basses, and sound effects, there are sounds that faithfully simulate piano, guitar, and trumpet, as well as looped and one-shot drum sounds, making the KAOSSILATOR a never-ending source of inspiration to stimulate your creativity.

Scale/key setting lets you produce perfect phrases
The KAOSSILATOR has a scale function that makes it simple to produce accurate pitches that match any musical context. You can choose from 31 different scales, including chromatic, diminished, as well as major and minor blues and pentatonic scales. The scale function can be used in conjunction with the key setting function, allowing you to perform in any key. Unusual scales such as Spanish, Ryukyu, and Raga are also provided, letting you create distinctive phrases with an exotic flavor.

Gate Arpeggiator expands your performance possibilities
The Gate Arpeggiator lets you produce specific patterns of notes in sync with the user-specified tempo, greatly expanding your performance options. Simply choose one of the 50 patterns to specify the timing of the notes, and you'll be creating phrases that you've never dreamed of in a flash.

Loop Recording accelerates your creative power
Loop Recording allows you to record a phrase with a specified number of beats (maximum 8 beats = 2 measures), and play it back endlessly. For example you can record a phrase using a synth-lead sound, and then layer (overdub) bass or drum sounds onto it. You can build up layers of cool phrases by simply repeating this cycle of selecting, playing, and recording sounds. Building a groove was never so easy.

i found this while looking for a cheap little synth a few months back, and thought it for a joke at first. at a glance it's pretty weak. no midi, no velocity sensitivity on the pad, only 100 programs, and you can't create patches. but i had to try it, and i'm glad i did. it is surprising awesome. the sounds on it complement any setup, for any musical style. the looping feature is perfect for sketching beats. the arpeggiator has enough settings to serve any purpose. and lastly, it is tiny! you can fit it in a pocket and simply plug in headphones. super portable. this little bundle of kaoss is unimaginably fun. highly recommended for anyone.

I found that this thing was alot of fun to play with but didn't really help me musically. This thing is quiet limited in is cappabilities: Its can't sync with any other devices, you can't change any of the instruments loaded on it, the recording is very limited in lenth (16sec loop at maximum), there is no way to erase (better not mess up). But this thing is a good fun toy to have around. Perfect for entertaining at parties or just messing around with friends. Or it would probably be a great toy (gift) for a young child just because its supper easy to use. I personal returned mine because this was not what I was looking for. If you are looking for something to spice up your music, I would NOT suggest this thing. Save your green.

Cool Gadget!!

By markterio

About Me Novice

Verified Buyer

Pros

  • Easy To Use
  • Good Quality
  • Portable music sketchpad

Cons

  • Can't add samples
  • No storage

Best Uses

  • Jam anywhere anytime

A very cool gadget, more of a high-end toy than an actual instrument, but I am splitting hairs- almost immediately most will be able to create wonderful tunes with just a finger and a little rhythmic timing. Designed for the Nintendo DS set (not an insult: this demographic group is expanding all the time), but will appeal to any music-lover with an urge to create electronic dance music or simply something with a beat and interesting sounds. The touch-pad interface is equally awesome and frustrating as you simply have to feel your way around to find specific notes. But, with some practice (for evidence of people who have, look for some YouTube videos), one can make the thing come alive...note: this is an affordable item at [$], but it may be rendered obsolete by the arrival of the Kaossilator 2, just out now...

Korg KAOSSILATOR

By Cameron Ehmig

from Florida

I have owned this for about a year now, and it is still an amazing machine. I have been playing drums since I was 4, and just a while ago, I wanted to just try this out. It is very simple to use, which is a plus. It has very nice sounds, also a plus. The loop recording, scales, and everything else are really nicely made. It is by Korg, so what do you expect. You do not need a computer or anything to use this thing. You can even get a wall-charger for it so that you do not need batteries either. The loop recording only goes up to so much, so it can be rather repeditive, but still a great machine. Also, there are no keys on it, so that can be a downside. If you need keys and you have an iPod touch of iPhone, then get the Akai Synthstation. I also have the Synthstation, and it is awesome. Also, if you have an iPad, then you can get just about any MIDI controller keyboard and plug it in (if supported). If you do not have either, then get a Korg Monotron, or the MiniKorg.

Great for improv!

By Anonymous

from Undisclosed

I've had this for a few days and i am quite impressed. This is a great tool for improv if you're a live musician, and even better for adding spice to your music. The arpeggiator isn't the greatest, but it's good enough. And also, some of the synth sounds aren't the most practical for live use. All in all, it's definitely worth the money. I velcro-ed it to my roland juno di, and i'm not taking it off! Its exactly what i needed for our school's talent show to show off haha. i love this thing, i can't wait to get the other kaoss pads!

Fun to play with

By Liquidplastic

from Floria

Its is a very cool instrument, but it does lack on some things, such as no external memory, short loop playback and cant connect to my DAW directly via midi because its not a midi instrument. But it has great sounds and it helps with my creativity. I record it and add effects later on my DAW making it my own. For starting out producers I recommend

Pretty cool gadget

By Jasper-h62h2

from Los Angeles

I got this for Christmas, and I haven't been able to stop playing with it. The only problem I have with it is that you can't record a very long loop, but it makes up for that with its many different tones and drum beats and whatnot. It'd be worth it to get this, in my opinion.

instant creative results

By timothy

from cleveland ohio

This kaossilator is waaaaaaay cool! I wrote 4 songs in the first hour playing with this thing. With a turn of the knob and your finger movements you get instant creative results! I save my loops in sonar! Just remember to record what you create before turning the unit off. A+ Korg! Love it!

Not "ready to use" as is

By Justin

from Dumfries, VA

First off, let me say that it is indeed fun to play around with. However, I think that any instrument should come ready to use out of the box. While there are a ton of features and settings that create a vast potential in this machine, it lacks something as simple as a visible grid to make music creation and replication accurate. There are instructions on the web for "hacking" it but doing so voids your warranty. To get around this I suggest printing your grid on removable protective screen covers sold for PDAs and other touch screen devices. It will work in this way so you don't have to disassemble it and void the warranty. Not coming equipped with this makes recreating songs and playing it accurate very difficult and gets it 3 stars. If you've large fingers it's difficult to hit the exact note you're aiming for but it worked fine with the stylus from my cell phone. Also, getting everything in sync while recording to it's memory can be difficult and it only gives you 8 beats to loop/record with (16 if you unlock a special mode and don't plan on being able to edit your recording). Aside from that it's a wonderful piece of equipment with the ability to set different scales and keys to match your desired intonation. Very fun to play around with, but something as simple as printing a grid on it from the get-go would increase it's usage potential and my star rating dramatically. I did return it and will save for the better model with the grid already in place and better recording options. As it comes from the factory it's just a rather neat but expensive toy. 5 stars for sound quality and potential, but ease of effective use and editing features need work.

Interesting device

By Frank

from Huntsville, AL

Althought the K has a very short record/playback looper, it offers heaps of capability for a very reasonable price. It's not a device for your studio, nor was it intended to be. It is a cool gadget to spark ideas.
