Quite frankly, I think Kentucky is making the best mandos out there for the money. The 505 with its carved top and great woods is to my mind the best deal they offer. It plays great, looks great (the finish on mine was flawless) and sounds better than mandos 3 times its price. It is incredibly loud too--great for bluegrass. Granted I did spend an extra $50 at my local shop to get it set up correctly, but even with that it is a bargain. Great starter or backup mando.

Long time guitar player, wanting to learn mandolin for some timbral diversity on my next recordings. Unfortunately, the first time I tuned the instrument up to pitch the upper piece of the adjustable bridge cracked 3/4 of the way through and collapsed. I'm still waiting to see if and how M/F will resolve the problem (I've asked them to send me a replacement bridge). Otherwise, seems like a decent instrument.

Comments about Kentucky Master KM-505 A-Model Mandolin:

I have only had this for a couple of weeks, but Guitar Center asked me to review it.
Well packaged, with a bridge already mounted! I tuned it up and it was ready to go. Smooth action, nice and low. I am a beginner, but the instrument makes me sound better.

Comments about Kentucky Master KM-505 A-Model Mandolin:

I am completely new to the mandolin but have played the fiddle for many years. This instrument has impressed me with its tone, its aesthetic beauty, and its playability. I am using this instrument as a learning tool and in jam sessions with my friends and it performs fantastically. Though I haven't used it in any concerts, it sounds fantastic and I'm sure it would be a great gig instrument as well. It does not have a build in pickup and after adding a strap the nut on the bottom of the instrument fell out. I kind of just stuck it back in and it hasn't fallen out again but I might add some wood glue for good measure. Not sure if this is a build quality issue or if the wood shrunk in the cold dry winter up here but either way its a little annoying. Overall great instrument!

I really love this instrument. This is an entry level 'pro' instrument. I've had a few lesser quality, but for the money this is really good. I can't put it down.

Great Mandolin for the Money

By Jordan Loftis

from Denver, CO

Comments about Kentucky Master KM-505 A-Model Mandolin:

Being relatively new to the mandolin, I only owned one mandolin prior to purchasing the KM-505. It wasn't a terrible mando, but it wasn't a terribly good one either. Three things attracted me to the 505 as my next purchase: solid wood top & sides, great price, nice finish & hardware.

Overall, I'm very happy with the tone, the look, the hardware, and the instruments playability. I bought this mando used, and not only was it about $150 cheaper, it practically looked brand new when I unboxed it.

I really enjoy this mando and am very happy I bought it. Check out the way these sound on YouTube, there are a few reviews/previews of this instrument.

Sweet little mando, takes some work to get ther

By 1AIoLl17q

from usa

Comments about Kentucky Master KM-505 A-Model Mandolin:

My only gripe is the fact that it was delivered with absolutely no setup. I've never bought an instrument from Musiciansfriend that required such extensive setup. You'll want to be prepared for this. Research on the mandolin blogs do say that most mandolins require setup. So, this may be a factor that this is my first mandolin.

Now that its setup, I'm extremely pleased. I'd buy another. Especially at $399.
The workman ship of this chinese made mandolin is good. The finish was nice and the intonation came in nicely once you located the bridge with the backside of the bridge in line with the points of the f-holes.
I had some funky white powder left on under the finger board. It came out easily with a toothpick.
Action of the manodlin was great after some significant setup. Please note, this mandolin will need a setup. the nut needed to be cut as it was high. The bridge needs to placed and matched with the finger board height. This is not a play out of the box instrument. It cost me $40 to get setup.
This is a great value at the new Musiciansfriend price of $399. It was $499 just a couple of weeks ago.

Kentucky 505 mandolin

By Suzanne Conner

Comments about Kentucky Master KM-505 A-Model Mandolin:

Nice woody tone. It works well for old time playing and bluegrass chops. It is well constructed with nice wood and finish. Most people are pleasently surprised when they pick it up and play it.
Has great playability. It looks great and sounds great.
Great tone and volume. Headstock inlay MOP. The finish is excellent
Alot of value for intermediate player that wants to step up from beginners mandolin

Excellent instrument for the money!

By Chris S

from Hudson Valley, NY

Comments about Kentucky Master KM-505 A-Model Mandolin:

I was very slightly bummed to find that it didn't come with a case, but then I'd rather spend my money on a great instrument - I already had a case, so no big deal. I was also slightly bummed to find that I had set to it up. But the good thing is that I pretty much know how to do it. I wound up having to call Customer Service with a problem I encountered with the set-up, and they helped me figure out what I needed to do; problem solved. This is a great mandolin to grow with, musically. My starter instrument was good enough to make me want to stick with it. The Kentucky MA-505 is one I can really progress with and enjoy for years to come.I like the extended fingerboard. The strings it came with aren't bad; I'll keep them until they wear out. The wood is fine quality; all the woodwork, really, is beautifully done. This is a beautifully made instrument. The grain of the wood is lovely, the laquer color is a bit darker and richer than what is shown on the website, the inlay is a beautiful ornament- it's a pretty little thing to look at in its own right. It has a nice, rich sound, warm, not tinny. It's got a good weight - it feels solid, but isn't so heavy that it kills the sound. The sound really projects.I've been checking out this mando for about a year or so on Musician's Friend and when the price dropped, I jumped on it. It's great value for the money.

I own a starter mando from another manufacturer, which will never compare to the full, warm sound of the Kentucky MA-505. I was ready to pay $600+ for a good instrument. But after I read a lot of reviews here and elsewhere, I settled on the MA-505 and I'm really pleased with my choice.

The best Kentucky A-model for the money

By Texas Rocker

from McKinney, TX

Comments about Kentucky Master KM-505 A-Model Mandolin:

I played one of these in Guitar Center today. Man what a good mandolin! This has a really nice balanced tone and isn't really overly loud or ringy. In the store there was a Mitchell A-Model mandolin right next to it so I played that one too. Well only 5 seconds after playing the Mitchell, I knew the Kentucky was way better! I highly recommend this mandolin!
