The pedigree is noble and a close look at the Kentucky KM-855 shows that the DNA is vintage. From the split-lip neck/body joint to the delicate mother-of-pearl inlays gracing the fretboard and peghead, the KM-855 has the traditional look and feel associated with the classic instruments of the mid-1920s. One chop and you will know that magic is there too.

An abbreviated fingerboard extension allows you to dig out the fat tone without the accompanying pick clatter on the fretboard. A comfortable radiused ebony fingerboard significantly reduces left hand fatigue. The thin nitro lacquer finish offers superb protection without the tone degradation associated with thicker alternatives. It's attention to the details that sets these mandolins apart from the rest.

Only reason I did not give 5 stars is not made in USA.

Comments about Kentucky KM-855 Artist F-Model Mandolin:

Wanted to give it a 5 star but not made in the USA. I dont think you can find one that plays and sounds this good for the price they ask. Definite 4 stars with 5 star service from guitar center. Mandolin and great service and set up from Guitar Center in OP Kansas. This is my second mandolin. I purchased a Kentucky A model back in 1998. Got the A model to drag out to beach bonfire jam sessions in Santa Cruz. Never played one before and found it refreshing to play just melodies and let the guitars jam out the chords. After playing that mandolin more and more I found myself need a little more "bark" or volume when playing melodies that led me to the F models. Tried other manufactures and came back to Kentucky price and sound. I loved the deep sounds and rings and the fact that with F model I have more fret board. I also really like the radial neck on the Kentucky made it easier to hit some of those higher fat finger notes and runs. The guys at guitar center let me try the KM805 before I moved up the KM855. They both sounded great. I personally liked the KM855 tone a little better then the KM805 but they were both close. I looked around for prices on the internet and guitar center was right there with the lower prices. Also the guys at guitar center did a great job of setting up the instrument, that was another thing I was worried about was setting it up and what if I found something I did not like. Guitar Center was great and told me about their great return policy in case I did not like it. The Mandolin stain was a nice walnut and the inlays really make the instrument look as good as it sounds. Played in cold and warm weather and it really keeps its tune. Lots of box or volume with this Mandolin. Heavy enough to need a good strap. I also found a good strong affordable case at Guitar Center too. Very happy with my new mando now its off to Jam it up.

Excellent Instrument

Comments about Kentucky KM-855 Artist F-Model Mandolin:

I am a novice on the mandolin, but have played stringed instruments most of my life. This is my first F-model mandolin and I am extremely pleased with it. I spent many hours listening to the different brands, looking for a specific pure, warm sound that did not sound plastic. I found it in this mandolin. The instrument came fully set up, the finish is impeccable with no flaws, no scratches or glue globs. It was played directly out of the box. Due to personal preference, I changed my strings to a lighter weight but the strings which came on it had a great tone. The notes are playable nearly to the end of the fret board, at which point there is no concern as I will not be playing in that area anyway. On other instruments I have played, obtaining a sweet sound from the first fret was a challenge, but it rings clear on this mandolin. The radiused fretboard is awesome. My other mandolin has a flat fretboard so there was a short adjustment period but only a few hours of playing to retrain the fingers! The inlay work is beautiful. It directly adds to the joy of having, using and viewing this instrument. The only perplexing issue I have encountered is that I sometimes get a vibration from the tailpiece. The top comes off to allow for ease of stringing. I have not yet figured out the cause of the intermittent vibration, but a little manipulation and it stops. This mandolin is balanced weight wise, and hangs comfortably with the aid of a shoulder strap. I have owned this instrument for two months, my only challenge with this mandolin, is having to stop playing and put it away for the day.
