Overview

The radiused fretboard of the KM-250S was developed by Kentucky and mandolin virtuoso David Grisman to ease the wrist strain he was suffering from. Now, this feature that greatly enhances the instrument's playability is available at a lower price point. With its long-scale neck and an internal air chamber that nearly re-creates the F-5, the KM-250S has both the warm tone required for solo performance as well as the cutting power necessary for string band work. A-5 style body with solid spruce top and solid maple back and sides. Long-scale maple neck with truss rod and 15th fret joint just like the vintage original. Nickel-plated hardware. Adjustable, compensated, rosewood bridge. Mother-of-pearl peghead inlay.

Features
  • Solid, hand carved and graduated spruce top
  • Solid, hand carved and graduated flamed maple back and sides
  • Solid one-piece maple neck adjustable truss rod
  • Nitrocellulose lacquer finish available in sunburst or burgundy
  • Rosewood headstock overlay with Mother of Pearl Inlays
  • High quality, nickel-plated Gotoh tuners
  • Radiused Rosewood fingerboard, adjustable bridge, and bone nut

Unpleasant Surprise

By Michael Marcus

from Portland, OR

Comments about Kentucky KM-250 Artist A-Model Mandolin:

I went to my local Guitar Center to purchase the KM-250. Upon picking it up, I was shocked at the overall poor workmanship! The 9th fret was installed visibly lower than the 8th and 10th frets, causing the same note to play on the 9th and 10th frets, across the fingerboard. The 12th through 16th frets all produced the same note as well. It was unplayable above the 9th fret. One of the salesmen had told me that he "personally setup all the mandolins". The intonation was okay and the string height appeared to have been adjusted. I own a Rover 35-S and thought the KM-250 would be an upgrade. The Rover is made by the same folks as the KM-250. My Rover is a superior to the KM-250 that I am reviewing. The top of the KM-250 had a visible blemish in the wood as well, a dark stain. Wouldn't have bothered me, but the remainder of the instrument was poor. To be fair, my Rover came from a "Mom and Pop" music store, and had been set up. I paid $160 for it, and could've ordered it from Amazon for $116. Also, buyer beware - although GC calls this a "KM-250" in the header, they refer to it as a "KM-250S" in the "At a Glance". I understand the KM-250 is an upgrade from the KM-250S. I may have been looking at a KM-250S.

Great mandolin

By david reeves

from Clinton, MS

Comments about Kentucky KM-250 Artist A-Model Mandolin:

This mandolin is great. The sound and quality of craftsmanship are spot on. If you're looking for something a bit more than just a beginner level, something you can learn and grow a bit on, this is the mandolin for you. You will probably have to set it it up(adjust bridge for correct intonation and action) but it really isn't very hard. I went on and tried it myself and got it set up. Awesome mandolin. I highly recommend it.
