  • Great Product

As reviewed by Mark on 9/7/2014

First off, silent means that the strike is quiet not that your kick drum is going to be suddenly usable in a library. It still hits the batter head and makes the drum go boom. The thing I liked about it was that there isn't any click in the initial attack. It's more of a sock-in-the-gut sound that worked to tame my kick drum's overtones. Also, there's a little less bounce and it's easier to bury the beater without that annoying little double tap that happens sometimes with all the modern plastic/felt hybrids. I would imagine that the metal players aren't going to like it for that reason. For me, I like a big fat kick sound that round and smooth as opposed to the edgy sound that most people want. The beater works well for this and I'm going to start experimenting with rubber balls and whatever in my continuing quest to dial in my kick. I can see that I'm going to have to start collecting various beaters now and this is a great one to have. 5 stars because it does what it's supposed to and more.

  • Pointless - did not fit my needs at all

As reviewed by Jesse Johnson on 4/23/2014

I'm so glad I got this email asking for a review. My goal was to be able to play and not bother my downstairs neighbors - I have a tennis ball isolation platform for my e-kit, and still it was WHILE I was using this product that I got my first and only noise complaint. ORDERING: Let's see, when I ordered this thing, it said they had some in stock - then immediately I got an email saying they were out of stock. Then they kept listing a date that they expected to have them, but that information seemed to be something they just made up - since it was always 2 days from whatever the date I was looking happened to be. I'd look again 2 days later, and the date would be - you guessed it - in 2 days. About 3 - 4 weeks after I ordered, I finally got an email saying it was being shipped to the store for me to pick up, and that I'd receive another email when I could come get it. Never got that second email, so after about a week I called them - and it was indeed sitting there waiting for me. Who knows how long it would have taken them to actually contact me. THE PRODUCT: Looks and feels solid. A little too solid, actually - the rod is very heavy, causing the thing to make MORE noise on a plastic pad than a couple of the regular felt ones I already had; and for anyone that has downstairs neighbors - it transfers a significant 'thump' into the floorboards. Can't speak about how it works on mesh. While I was waiting for this thing to arrive, I tried my hand at making a few different silent beaters - all are quieter than this thing, and all but the first attempt have a better rebound. It needs a lighter shaft(nobody it going to be stomping if they are going for silence, the thing feels like a crowbar); and it needs a thin layer of soft foam on the outside to deaden the thump. A beginner DIYer can do much better with a nerf baseball(or similar), and a piece of 1/4 inch all-thread.
