Nice amp, reliability might be an issue

Comments about Jet City Amplification JCA2212C 20W 1x12 Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

I have had my Jet City for almost a year. It sounds great and has plenty of power. It really excels at the modern overdriven sound. It has a reasonable clean tone but it isn't a Fender clean. The tone is better than many amps but the low end can be a bit muddy if not mixed properly. The biggest concern I have is that something in the power section went out on mine recently requiring a trip to the shop and the foot switch also broke. Jet City was very helpful in getting the switch fixed. I elected to have the amp fixed locally because of shipping so I can't say how they would have handled that, but their support has been very good so far on the switch. All of this doesn't give me a lot of confidence in the quality and I wonder how road worthy this amp is going to be long term. But as I said, it sounds great and for the money you can't beat the tone. I play rock and modern country and it fits the bill for that.

Comments about Jet City Amplification JCA2212C 20W 1x12 Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

YES it could use reverb, better Tolex and more "boutique-y sparkle." But it could also cost as much as a boutique amp... so get real, get over it, and get playing.

People gripe about the JCA2212C's lack of clean headroom and I get it; Channel 1 ("Crunch," hello, that should tell you something) grits up with the gain knob barely cranked. But each of its two channels has a master volume so this can be dealt with. Lower output pickups buy more headroom; my Strat through the Crunch channel gives some nice SRV drive that cleans up when when I back off the volume. Same with my P90-equipped guitars. Tweaking the gain and volume knobs can yield a nice variety of clean-to-drive sounds on channel 1 just by riding the guitar volume. Push up the gain and you QUICKLY get into classic rock grit and distortion.

Channel 2 ("Distortion") is like 1 on steroids. With the gain down there's some grit; pushed up only to 10:30 it gets huge. Crank to 3:00 and you're talking massive sustain and girth. But even with everything pretty much maxed you can hear all the notes in a chord and it stays responsive to pick dynamics, very articulate--great for harmonic squeals. Impressive definition.

No complaints about the stock Eminence speaker so far, though I might try an upgrade in the future just to see how it sounds. I also might swap one or two preamp tubes to something a little less gainy to give a bit more clean headroom.

The twenty watts are plenty loud, though it might not be enough for a metal band with a huge kit and a drummer who hits to kill. Thanks to the gain/master volume thing, I can play it in my bedroom and push the tubes without losing my lease.

Responds great to pedals; handy effects loop.

I've clocked over 40 years in front of every kind of amp imaginable. This one IS WHAT IT IS: a lightweight, inexpensive 2-channel no frills high gain combo. I might have some complaints if I was expecting more of it, but I'm not, so I'm happy to give it 5 out of 5. Nice bang-for-buck.
