The David Ellefson CB-XV 5-string X-Series bass is a formidable addition to the Jackson bass family, bearing the personal stamp and distinctive features of the fleet-fingered Megadeth bassist. From its earth-shaking dual humbucking pickups to its lightspeed compound-radius fingerboard and sophisticated onboard controls, the CB-XV is pure Jackson and pure Ellefson in sound, feel, look and value. Some features include an alder Concert Bass body with a gloss finish in Black or Quicksilver for killer looks. The rosewood fingerboard with 21 jumbo frets and shark fin inlays, and ivoroid-bound black headstock with ’90s-style Jackson logo give the CB-XV an unmistakable look. The EMG humbucking neck (HZ40N) and bridge (HZ40B) pickups and EMG BEQ3 active preamp are the perfect set of electronics to help you dial in the sound you want. • Great bass for metal or rock

As reviewed by Daylin Criswell on 8/27/2012

I bought this bass after wanting a Jackson Concert Bass for so many years and not being able to find one. They finally re-released them this past year and I've had my eye on one of these CBX basses with the EMG HZ pickups that I had to grab this one to test it out. I decided on the 5 string version to replace my other 5 string and silver as I already owned a black bass. First impressions were, the string spacing is incredibly close, feels more like a guitar than a bass in that regard. Plays very well, has a nice punch and the midrange really pulls through the rest of the instruments in the band. It's relatively light in weight and it just looks metal, those sharkfin inlays and the pointy headstock. That was the main reason I had to get it. After my 30 days of testing it out I finally decided on keeping it. Well worth the price.

  • Excellent bass for an affordable price.

As reviewed by Tim Quinn on 4/16/2014

I initially started researching the JS3 and tested a few out at my locale guitar center. I really liked the way it played but had to try out numerous different amps to hone in a decent tone. I ended up having to use a solid state amp to enjoy the Jackson stock pickups and preamp. I finally decided to go with what I really wanted which is the CB-XV. The reason why I gave it four stars instead of five is because I had to adjust the action once I noticed I was getting really bad string buzz on the first five frets on all five strings. Other than that the EMG pickups and preamp are of course fantastic lots of control over the tone. It definitely has the signature Dave Ellefson growl I was looking for. The neck plays smoothly, the inlays look awesome, and the paint job looks great in person. Overall for a bass made outside of the US it's pretty damn good and I highly recommend purchasing this bass if you appreciate that 80/90's look and tone.
