This guitar is almost perfect. Nice body, fast playing fret board. The guitar is beautiful. As for the sound, the sound is great. But it's just missing a bit of "umph" because of the passive pickups. Don't get me wrong though these have decent EMG passive pickups. But getting active EMG 81s will basically make this guitar perfect. Especially for playing metal.
If you are one who is saving up for a nice guitar. You can wait a bit more and do nothing, or you can just buy this one and start playing right away. Then save a bit more to upgrade the pickups later.
To be very honest with you though, I'm in no real rush to upgrade.
I partnered this guit ar with Line 6 Spider IV and the sound was amazing! The neck felt comfortable and so were the frets. Perfect sound for heavy metal!
For the money this guitar is excellent. There is a lot to like, BUT also some crucial deal-breakers. I'll try to summarize...
THE GOOD:
- Looks absolutely beautiful, stunning guitar
- Despite being passive HZ's, the pickups are very good for all style - metal to mellow
- The weight and balance is great - it's very light and comfortable
- In this price-range it's a good buy and versatile for all style
- The string-thru body / system is extremely easy to maintain
- Stays in tune surprisingly well (one of my biggest fears about a mid-range guitar) once it's tuned and in a stable temperature environment
- Nice warm sound and sustain
THE BAD:
- The NECK and FRETS are CONSISTENTLY problematic (probably due to cheap mass production from India, no offense to India). I'll address that in detail in a moment...
- Right out of the box the frets have burrs and have sharp edges, you WILL need to have them filed-down to avoid tearing your hands up
- The neck strength and shimming is weak. While playing the neck will flex too much (without trying) and affect your attack as well as the fretting give / threshold
BOTTOM LINE AND DETAILED EXPERIENCE:
I ordered this from guitarcenter.com and was told that "any setup / neck issues" would be taken care of by the local Guitar Center shop with no hassle. NOT true. Although my local Guitar Center shop was VERY accommodating, they could/would not fix the neck and fret problems without paying an extra fee called "repairs". When is the last time you had to pay extra for a brand new guitar to work right at a store? Never! But that's what was asked of me. I brought it to the local GC and in order to have it play right I was informed (after the sale on guitarcenter.com) that I would need to pay a setup fee to get the kinks worked out with the neck / frets. WHILE I WAS AT THE SHOP they had one of these right on the shelf, and it had the SANE neck/fret problems as the one I bought here on the site. It was quickly determined that the poor workmanship and production on the neck/frets was not an isolated incident! (Yet still, I would have been required to pay a "repair fee" to the store on this brand new guitar, beyond what you would expect). The frets are POORLY cut and the neck is POORLY SHIMMED right out of the box AND on the rack at the store.
If you want a guitar that WILL require a re-setup and fret filing and an extra fee, then this is an good guitar for the money. HOWEVER, it should not be this bad in the $400+ range, and that is it's downfall. Pick up a Charvel or Ibanez in this price range and you will find that the frets and neck are MUCH better crafted and ready to play.
The neck on this guitar, especially the frets, are not up to par with the rest of it. For the price it sounds great and looks absolutely beautiful and COULD/WOULD be a fantastic purchase, but is crippled by the inferior neck and will require a major overhaul for anyone who is used to the quality of an Ibanez or Charvel in this similar price range. These frets or poorly cut with burrs and the string leveling is sub-par for the price-range.
Other than that it's a beautiful guitar and the body / sound / tuning is really great. The neck and frets and nut are a disaster for a PRO player, but I would call this: A High-End intermediate guitar with a lot of potential. Just don't get screwed into paying extra to have the fretboard "fixed".
