Replaced the Mesa 12AX7 tube with the JJ 12AX7 and have been very happy that I did! The internal construction of the JJ tube is superior to the Mesa and the amp also has higher gain now. Overall very satisfied, you can't go wrong with JJ Tubes.
Greetings, 12AX7 users and potential users. I recently purchase two AMPEG SVP PRO Preamps from Guitar Center and really love 'em! Thanks, GC! So, I decided to begin the process of "Tube-Rolling: Buying and installing different brands of tubes in search of the best, however subject, sound for my SVP's. I found a great deal on some JJ Electronics 12AX7's and 12 AU7's on another site and GC priced-matched to the penny. So, I ordered them, received them and installed them with permission form Pro Coverage and found that the New-Production JJ Electronics 12AX7's are EXCELLENT! However, they have a "GAIN RATING OF 100" and I believe these run at 150(I know, that's off the scale, but, these tubes KICK!) and that's is just too strong for my 2,000 watt system. So, I tube rolled the tubes that were already in one of the SVP's along with the new one's from GC and hit a combination that works for me, for now... The reason I'm emphasizing the Gain-Factor so much is that if you used these JJ Electronic 12AX7 tubes in the input stage of an SVP, you can easily cause the tube to distort way beyond the usually desirable range between a natural bass sound with just the right amount of "HI-FI" sound along with some "glassiness" into just another dirty sounding input-signal processed by your signal-chain and delivered to your audience as such. If that's your gig, then have at it. What I did was to use the one JJ 12AX7 in the input stage position and one JJ 12AU7 in it's slot with the balance of the 5 being the Sovteks that were already in the one of the two SVP's and that gave me better control of my input(can't tell 'ya why, I just started doing this) and really excellent control of my parametric(?) EQ that I often augment with the SVP's built-in electronic-EQ. The end result: Clean, clear and beefy input-signal matched by the rest of the signal-chain but a bit lacking in the balance between the Mid's and High's. HOWEVER! Please, don't let my opinion stop you from ordering these New-Production JJ Electronic 12AX7 and 12AU7 tubes because everything from your thoughts about sound to your bass and string choices and your output amp and speakers will all impact your sound! As I discovered from Rick Marshall on a YouTube video called "Tube Amp Survival Guide #1" and confirmed by other sources, "Output tubes are slaves to whatever is handed to 'em," and in "Tube Amp Survival Guide #2," he says, "Well, we've been usin' JJ tubes because they've proven themselves more reliable than...JJ's have performed the BEST!" - So far, I agree! Happy Rollin'! (the tubes, not the funny stuff! - LoL!)!
quite-ed down my Blues Jr. but still one tube was bad. I'll return the bad one for a refund.
