Overview

The JBL PRX518S offers the performance of an 18" sub-woofer in a package not much larger than a typical 15" sub. With a 36mm pole receptacle that accepts the JBL SS3-BK speaker stand on the top panel and integrated stereo pass-thru, with selectable HP filter, this is the perfect complement to the PRX500 full-range systems. Configured with a PRX512M or PRX515; the result is a highly transportable, high performance sub-satellite system. The addition of a polarity reverse option further enables system optimization.

The PRX518 is a high performance self-powered compact sub-woofer system. The PRX518S is comprised of a 2044E 460 mm (18") VGC (Vented Gap Cooled) woofer driven by a Crown International Class-D digital power amplifier. A propriety digital processing chip (DSP) chip is at the core of a fully featured input section, providing user selectable crossover functionality, polarity optimization, protection, dynamic limiting and discrete component optimization.

The enclosure is constructed of quality plywood and coated in JBL's rugged DuraFlex finish. An integrated pole mount on the top enables an easy sub/satellite configuration. The CNC machined steel grille wraps around the sides of the enclosure so there are no protruding lips on the front of the box to create acoustical interference. The grille is also lined with an acoustically transparent foam to provide additional driver protection.

The amplifier input panel offers stereo inputs with XLR or 1/4 inch jack compatibility. A user selectable crossover ensures a smooth transition to full-range system connected to the stereo outputs. Signal present and overload lights indicate the system status and assist in setting the optimum level, via the level control knob.

Bought one of these to match my eons g2 with. Kept on turning red overload while i had the gain of the sub in the middle at 12 o clock. Wasnt pushing it at all. Was very dissapointed beacuase all my speakers have been jbl for all 3 of my dj sets we have and i was expecting better. Spens 1000 dollars on a powered sub for simplicity and did not get any results.

Avoid at all costs

By Mike

from Fort Wayne, IN

We've gone through 3 of these units in the past 3-4 months. 2 of them just died (while playing soft music no less) and 1 sounded as if the woofer ripped and the crossover had a bad connection when connecting to play for the 4th gig. These were used for weddings and school dances, never pushed past their limits, and none of the have lasted past 5 gigs. The weight and price is great, but their durability is horrible. Don't buy these unless you have backups on hand and have a reliable JBL source near you that will exchange your broken units for new ones.

Nothing Better!!!

By Ryan W

The thumping in your chest says it all. This sub packs a punch and shakes my house. It also sounds great outdoors while paired with my eon15 g2's.

Great System

By Rick Rideout

from Evansville IN

I purchased 4 of the PRX515 and 2 PRX518 and couldn't be happier. I DJ for several ballroom dance clubs and used the system for the first time on new years eve in a 100 X 200 foot room and had no problems filling the room. I play from CD's and computer. I went with PRX to be sure I had the correct amp for each speaker. If I add to the system I don't have to worry if my amps can handle it. I have never had any buzzing from the power cords, which was a concern of mine. Great sound, light weight and a very professional looking design. The only draw back to this system is the 120 volt extension cords you have to run to each speaker. JBL could improve the design by adding an extra outlet for the 120 volt on each speaker to continue to the next speaker. (In and Out for 120 volt) If you have several speakers per side you need three way plugs to continue on to the next speaker. This slows down setup and tear down a bit. I custom built 120 volt cords to the exact length so I don't have extra weight and lots for cords to connect together.

Hits hard, very clean

By Chris

from Maryland

Used this with my passive EV tops and they round out the bottom effortlessly. Just did a gig in a 12K sq ft venue and the bass was even and solid everywhere. Easy to transport. Only drawback - needs a dedicated 15amp circuit, most likely ( per box ) if you are going to drive them hard. To the guy who had them red-lining, you might have been sending them a distorted signal or you had a defective product - these have headroom to spare.

Bass hits like a shock wave!!

By Chip

from PA

Very pleased with this purchase. Sub has definition and power while being extremely light! Works well in high power stereo in big home room plus transportable party system for large parties indoor and out. Also very nice looking and really cool illuminated logo when on. Really nice job JBL!! Love the 78 lbs compared to some of the other 164lb monsters. Have experience with all types of gear, EV, JBL, Peavy, plus all home stereo including high end. This is a terrific value for the price! Use of a home theatre sub when you want a thrill! It's ridiculously good! Bass will shock you!

Paired with a set of JBL-EON G2's, this powered sub hits hard and add def. adds the necessary bass. Recommend to any DJ (or anyone) needing the extra low end.
