The Johnny Smith was introduced in 1961, It combined Gibson's manufacturing know-how with Smith's creative vision, resulting in a classic body style with unprecedented technical innovation. The Johnny Smith featured the first floating humbucking pickup, a 25" scale, thinner body, and a wide, 1 3/4" nut width. Taking inspiration from the past, it resurrected the classic X-braced top, a design used by Gibson in the 1930's. With it's increased sustain and warm, throaty tone, the X-brace has become the standard among contemporary archtop builders.
