Originally designated as the Les Paul Special, the name was changed to SG in late 1959. The body contours were sharpened in '61. Vibrato became optional '62, standard by '65. The original P90 pickup configuration was changed to mini-humbuckers by 1972 and remained standard until being discontinued in '78. Used on a multitude of classic recordings, the SG Special became a favorite of the Who's Pete Townsend.
