The Gibson Les Paul Deluxe was originally released in 1969. It was basically a Standard Goldtop that was fitted with mini-humbuckers. The new pickups produced a nice, tight crunch that pleased many players of the period. The Who's Pete Townshend made use of them in several concerts and recordings.
