The Ampeg company has a long history of producing great bass amplifiers. Founded by Everett Hull in 1949, the first Ampeg amp was the 1x12" 18 watt Super 800 combo. In '51, they added the Model 815, a 20watt 1x15" combo, and finally the Model 950C, a 50watt 2x12", in '59. 960 saw the introduction of the Portaflex series, destined to become a classic for recording as well as live performance. Available with 12,15, or 18" speakers, it had a unique flip-top design that allowd the head to be tucked away in the cabinet for safe and easy transportation. At the 1969 NAMM show, Ampeg introduced the mother of all bass amps, the 300watt SVT and accompanying 8x10" cabinet. Both the Portaflex and the SVT have become highly valued collectables due to their exceptional tone and, in the case of the SVT, raw power.
