Since it's introduction in 1961, there have been numerous models that have carried the SG name. There have been "Standard" and "Jr" model, as well as the top of the line "Custom". Originally, the guitar was called Gibson Les Paul SG, but the "Les Paul" was dropped in late 1961. The SG has been used by many prominent musicians over the years, most notably Angus Young of AC/DC and Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath. Gibson has offered different variations and finishes on the basic SG body style and continues to manufacture the original designs as well as special editions.
