Comments about Ibanez TMB300 4-String Electric Bass Guitar:

Great entry level bass. As a novice I find it easy to play and well balanced when standing. The on board EQ (powered by a 9v) is a plus. I do find that there is significant sympathetic resonance issues. This could be due to set up or technique, but I found the issue easily resolved with fret wraps. I would recommend this bass to other beginners.

My new favorite bass

Comments about Ibanez TMB300 4-String Electric Bass Guitar:

I am no expert, but this is my fourth bass guitar. I own a very nice artisan Cort from the 80s that plays well but is a style and finish that just doesn't say 'rock n roll' and then I own a few Gretsch Junior Jet short scales that are also nice guitars but I wanted to get something that was a long scale with a nice vintage look and great tone. I am still dialing in the sound - but with two active pickups, the ability to go single coil on the rear humbucker and a 2-band EQ, you can dial in a sound that ranges from high and chiming to low and rumbling. I have dialed in a middle ground that seems to be a nice trade off of both.

The fret board is nice, no issues with build. The bound frets are smooth and look great. In fact I really love the way this guitar looks (in Soda Blue) with the solid bar fret markers and the vintage brown pick guard. It is a brand new bass that looks like it was in a time capsule from the 70s.

I have only had the bass for a week so far, but have been playing it almost every day and once I swapped out the roundwounds for some flats, I really felt like this has become my favorite instrument to play. Haven't touched the other basses since. I mostly work through songs on Rocksmith - so I can't comment on its true tone or stage-worthiness, but it sounded great through the amp set-up at GC and my practice amp at home, and it has nice sustain.

My one small complaint is the tuners, they feel thin and weak to me, being the first bass I have owned that uses the big 'paddle' tuners, this might just be the way they feel. I will be looking closer at the Fenders and Squires next time I am in GC.

I am really happy I purchased this bass...I see the TMB600 is also available and it features upgraded pickups and an after-market bridge...for nearly double the cost! It might be worth it if you are a recording-level artist or absolutely have to have that antique white finish (I wouldn't blame you, its gorgeous) but it under-scores to me what a value I found in this guitar at this price.

I give it five stars for it's price range - I am NOT saying that it is the best guitar made, but maybe the best in and around it's price range.

Disappointing Build Quality On An Otherwise Nifty Bass

      By Andrew

Comments about Ibanez TMB300 4-String Electric Bass Guitar:

I wanted to love this bass. I really did. The Metallic Forest finish was gorgeous. The bound/inlaid neck was beautiful. And in general the bass produces a wide range of interesting tones. Unfortunately, Ibanez appears to have rushed the first batch through production and a number of issues cropped up with the fit & finish. The first TMB300 I ordered (not from GC, since they didn't have any at first) arrived with a busted control plate - it was just loose and flopping, with two screws missing and one floating loose in the box, having busted out of the wood and leaving a nasty scar on the pick guard. I returned it right away and then ordered from GC. The one from GC had a poorly seated jack which was grounding out. The tech at GC was able to fix it, thankfully. But that was just the beginning of the problems. The machine heads are cheap, and two of the ears developed a rattle pretty quickly. The truss rod was a hunk of junk and was basically stripped from the get go. Fret buzz was heavy. These are all things that can be fixed, but I don't like having to fix things on a new instrument. Yes, it's a nice package at a decent price, and if it hadn't suffered from these issues, I'd have kept it happily. But instead I returned it, with a bit of a heavy heart. Perhaps the next batch will be assembled with more care and better components. If so, I'd give it another go. In short, sometimes an affordable instrument is a bargain. Sometimes, though, it's just cheap.
