Overview

To the newcomer, the multi-scale concept may appear a bit unusual, but the biggest surprise may be how comfortable players become within a minute or two of playing the instrument. The different fret-to-bridge distances enhance tonality, creating a better sounding bass. Previously, these instruments were only available from boutique bass builders, but now Ibanez is proud to introduce the SRFF806 Multi-Scale bass at an affordable price.

The goal of the multi-scale system is to give the better tension of each string. The tension helps to create a more alive, open tone. On the SRFF806, the scale length is 33.6 in. on the C-string side, expanding to 35.5 in. at the low B.

Although the multi-scale neck can appear intimidating and unnatural, nothing could be further from the truth. When looking down at the neck from the players perspective, the exaggerated fret layout seems to almost disappear and actually feels quite normal. Its multi-scale frets ergonomically complement the angle of a player's hand as it moves up and down the neck, facilitating quick, comfortable playing.

The SRFF806 is a quality instrument designed for the experienced, seasoned musician. Its ash body is attached to a 5-piece jatoba/bubinga SRFF6 neck with a rosewood fretboard, medium frets and custom fretted inlays. The Mono-Rail V bridge is the perfect match for a multi-scale instrument, allowing for independent positioning of each strings mini-bridge section to providing excellent intonation and superior string vibration transference. Electronics include Bartolini BH1-5 pickups, for a full-range, warm, punchy tone, and a 3-band EQ with bypass switch and mid-frequency switch for complete sonic control.

Comments about Ibanez SRFF806 Multi-Scale Six-String Electric Bass Guitar:

Yeah, I know this is my third review of this bass. It's not that I have some obsession with it, but it is one of the most unique basses I've ever owned. With its fanned frets scaled from low 35.5" up to high 33.6", I couldn't resist setting it up for a voice range unlike that of any of my other nine basses. I changed out the strings to low C# up to D. The longer scale of the lower strings gave me better clarity than I expected. I also found that I had to have at least a 500-watt amp to bring out those low tones better, and it does, so keep that in mind. The stock pickups work fine with the extra power of the amp. Warning - you will have to enlarge the grooves in the nut and raise the bridge saddles on the four lowest strings to avoid fret buzz and hitting upper frets. I found it worth the effort, but make CERTAIN that's what you really want to do BEFORE you modify this wonderful instrument. Maybe I just lucked out, but I'm even happier and more pleased with it now. I can answer those boom-box cars now, not that I'll actually turn it up that high. But I can! And, yes, I actually do have original music I play that far down.

Comments about Ibanez SRFF806 Multi-Scale Six-String Electric Bass Guitar:

I can't believe I'm the first to write a review on this bass. Really now!? Come on, people, wake up! This bass is a whole, different playing experience. This is my first encounter with a fanned-fret instrument, and it does look intimidating at first, but I felt amazed at how quickly I adjusted to it. I have ten basses right now, and this one has the clearest and cleanest low B of all of them, thanks to the 35.5-inch scale of that string. The strings shorten to 33.6 inches on the high C. I also appreciate the passive/active ability as I've had batteries die on me in the middle of a performance. This bass also has a very wide range of tones. Wouldn't be great if Ibanez put out a fretless version of this bass? I almost got the 5-string version, but I'm very glad I held out for this one. Yes, it is a big bass, and the strings are a bit farther apart than I expected, but I'm doing fine with that. The construction and attention to detail on mine were spot on, no complaints. By the way, it is also available in walnut finish. I know I'll get a long time of enjoyment playing this beautiful baby. Don't be afraid of it, bass players, come over to the fanned-fret side.

Comments about Ibanez SRFF806 Multi-Scale Six-String Electric Bass Guitar:

I'm a college music major and I've been playing bass for about 8 years now, mostly jamming with friends, practicing, and doing small local gigs so I never felt the need to buy a nice bass like this one until I broke my previous bass beyond worth repairing. Most of my searching was for basses around the $600 mark since I'm just an 18 year old delivering pizza to get by and it can take a while to save up money. However when I saw this bass and researched it further I decided this is the one for me. And six months later I'm glad to find that i was absolutely right. Although I spent twice as much money as I origionally intended when I set out for a new bass I feel it was worth it after a week of playing this instrument. The fanned frets felt normal the instant I picked it up, my fingers could hardly tell the difference. The design is excellent and achieves what's they set out to do with string tension. The low b on this model is the clearest I've ever heard from a bass, with excellent Intonation to match. I love the versitility offered as well, the pickups, pickup selectors, and tone knobs allow you to dial in very specific tones with the help of your amp and or pedals. I wasn't sure how I'd feel about the high c string as I've been playing on low end five strings until now, but honestly I love it. The extra range helps me add a little more color to my writing for bass. Most importantly the bass feels right in my hands. it's incredibly easy and fun to play. It's the lightest bass I've ever played too, after a three hour standing jam session I felt like I could keep going all day. In short, this is the most amazing bass I've ever played. I'm in love, more like this please.

Comments about Ibanez SRFF806 Multi-Scale Six-String Electric Bass Guitar:

I'm always looking for different sounds in bass guitars. This fanned fret 6-string did not disappoint me at all! I got this bass because of the multi-scale and voice range. With the B-string scale at 35.5 inches, this is the clearest and cleanest open B of all my basses - nine counting this one. I had no trouble at all adjusting to the fanned frets but felt right at home playing to for the first time. The strings were a bit farther apart than I expected, but I'm also used to a 7-string, so adjusting to this baby was no sweat. It may be a bit much for a first-time bass buyer - maybe. This bass still exceeded my expectations and is a very welcome addition to my collection, and yes, I do play them all. Don't anyone be afraid of the fanned frets. You're sure to get used to it quickly. I play several different genres of music, including Christian and original, and this bass fits them all very, very well. Did I say it also is a real attention-getter? Ooooh, yeah!

Asked for this for Christmas 2015; been playing it so much I forgot to review it!
Did as much homework as the internet had content for this bass. Bought sight unseen and it was a gem right out of the box!
Fit and finish are top notch. Well balanced and great attention to detail.
Passive pickups and active electronics have a wide palette of tones. Fanned frets are unnoticeable and I play it like it was made for me...from concept to creation.
A true joy. Now I want one in the other color, just because it is that good.

Comments about Ibanez SRFF806 Multi-Scale Six-String Electric Bass Guitar:

Meant to post a review sooner but was too busy all year playing this bass!
Received for Christmas 2015. Did as much homework on it online, and asked my wife for it sight unseen.
After tuning up it played perfectly out of the box. Well balanced, great appointments and solid craftsmanship. Only thing I've had to adjust is minimal action and truss rod after instrument settled in to Colorado altitude.
It is a joy to play and the passive pickups with active electronics have a wide palette of tones.
Fanned frets were unnoticeable when playing, but the technology lends itself to truer notes and the tension on the lower strings, especially the low B, is unparalleled by any other bass in it's price range on the market in my opinion. It is tight, fat and so responsive!
It's hard not to grab for it every time I reach for a bass. I want one in the Flat Walnut brown now too...just because!

Comments about Ibanez SRFF806 Multi-Scale Six-String Electric Bass Guitar:

Got this for Christmas 2015. Thought I'd reviewed it but was way too busy playing it all year!
Read as much as I could find and watched what few videos there are on the web...still made decision to ask my wife for it sight unseen.
Tuned it up and was good to go out of the box! It's my first six string bass, and first fanned fret instrument; must've been fate but I took to it like it was MADE for me. (30 years experience might've played a role too).
After a few months I adjusted the truss rod and action from setting in (to home and altitude in CO). Minor tweaks I'm capable of doing and it plays like butter.
Fanned frets were not noticeable and the tightness and clarity of the strings down to the low B is amazing. I feel I got lucky with the B on my 2000 Stingray 5; I've sold off Esh, Tobias and others as they couldn't match this quality.
Quality is top notch from wood, fit, finish and electronics. I've had boutique handmade imports (I.e. Esh Bass for example), and they don't hold a candle to this monster.
Pickups are passive which I prefer, and the active electronics make them versatile beyond compare.
I can't say enough good about this instrument. If I could buy one in the other color I would lol!
